Check out the Badlands backpacks. You don't have to modify most of them and they're really supposed to be rugged, reliable hunting packs.

I really like your picks on clothing and weapons. Do you own or have access to all this kick ass gear? If you do you're off to a good start.

Awesome so far. Can I ask what region you're hunting in and what the common game would be?
Make sure that if you're layered up for the cold that you don't over layer your self; the last thing in the world you want is to sweat when the wind starts pounding you. A lot of people actually get hypothermia from getting their thick clothing soaked; it's just something to think about. Also if you're in a wet or really stormy area it might be a good idea to wear more Poly/Cotton or Nyco as apposed to cotton based clothes; cotton tends to retain moisture pretty bad.
I like both of your firearms choices but why .357? If that's what you have and what you're comfortable with it's all good; I'd consider getting a rifle chambered in a larger caliber though for taking larger game at longer distances though.........but I don't know what the area you're hunting is like (Thus my first question) so for all I know the .357 is perfectly sufficient lol.

He is hunting zombies "purpose: scouting/zed hunting". I don't know what the weather condition is though.

I thank that scouting and killing zombies need different equipment.

Scouting:

Clothing that fits the environment need and that color will blend in to the area being scouted
Boots
Gloves
Pistol belt
Pack with:
Blanket or camouflage for hiding, 10 X binocular,
cooking tin, utensil, fire tool, first aid kit, lens cleaner, maps, note pads, pens, radio, food for 3 to 5 days, 3 liters water, 25 water purification tablets, 1/2 roll t.p., 50 feet rope, knife sharpener, flash light, extra batteries, compass, ruler, protractor, and misc..
Kukri machete
hunting knife
leather man
Savage 30-06 bolt action with 3-9 X 40 scope and 50 rounds
Glock 22 4 - 15 round mags.

This should allow for quick movement, and ability to hide if the need arises to watch zombie packs or other survivors.

Hunting zombies:

Clothes that fit the weather and durable
Boots
Base ball shin and knee guards
Gun belt
Tactical vest
Small pack - 2 to 3 days of food, 3 quarts of water, 25 water treatment tablets, fire, first aid kit, blanket, flash light, radio, batteries, knife sharpener, 100 feet of rope, 8X mini binoculars, map, note pad, pen, 2 paint cans, and extra ammo.
Paint ball mask or other face, eye, and mouth protection.
Kukri Machete
Small fire axe
Leather man
30 inch crow bar

AK with 11 - 30 round mags., cleaning and tool kit, and 100 rounds on stripper clips (in pack)
Glock 22 with 5 - 15 round mags., cleaning kit, and 50 rounds (in pack)
1911 with 5 - 10 round mags., cleaning kit, and 50 rounds (in pack)

This will be heavy but I am hunting zombies and don't want to run out. I can stash some in a safe place before engaging zombies.

Dont know that I would waste my time "hunting Zeds" I would go hunting for food, but would not use the energy to actively look for UncleZed, or scout for them for that matter. That being said
For cold weather hunting
Winter goretex/thinsulate (hooded)coat and bibs over thinsulate LJ's, goretex lined boots. Gloves

Depending on whaty I am hunting.
For general hunting( what ever I can find) Rem 870 with mixed bag shells.
Colt 1911. 45
8 inch Hunter
Snow shoes
1 qrt water bottle.
For small game exclusive, exchange Remy 870 for my westernfield.22lr bolt
For large game exclusive, exchange Remy 870 for my Savage 110 30-06 bolt

Warm weather exchange winter cammies for mossy oak pattern warm weather cammies

Scouting load as I wouldn't hunt Zeds. Since I'm poking about it would be better to have a light load. Since the bow is a hunting bow I could always bag a deer if the chance came up.

Weapons:
1 x Ash hunting bow with a soft leather quiver and 10 arrows
2 x Luger P08 pistols with 4 mags total
1 x Hunting knife

Cloths - All earth tones

1 x Pants - heavy fabric or denim
1 x Wool socks
1 x Heavy fabric shirt
1 x Moose hide Jacket
1 x Pair of TETHERA hiking boots
1 x Hat
1 x Moose leather belt
1 x Pair of sunglasses

Gear

1 x 25 ft length of rope
1 x Bushnell Excursion EX Binoculars
2 x Holsters for guns
1 x Nylon 2 magazine pouch
1 x Moose hide satchel bag
1 x 1 L water skin
1 x Apple sized peice of pemmican
1 x Random fruit such as an apple
1 x Bottle of water purification tablets
1 x Compass
1 x Small leather pouch
1 x Fire piston
1 x 3 inch peice of punky wood

Mobility Very High

- Edited for typos - forgot the g in length and I omitted the second s in compass, left a m out of pemmican and I transposed the e & l in satchel - lol I need to pay closer attention lol

For hunting I would use the same gear I use now with a couple of additions:

Ruger No. 1 in .270 Win
Springfield M1911 .45 w/4 Wilson Combat mags
Realtree Camo bib overalls and shirt
Realtree camo jacket if needed
Scout pack
Skinning knife pack-3 knives (had it too long to remember the brand or real name)
Canteen & water purification filter
Insulated snake boots - camo & comfy
Emergency kit-first aid kid, waterproof matchesspace blanket ect
Camo burlap netting
Camo head net
Bushnell 7-15x
LED headlamp
Topo Map
Deer drag
Some sort of trail snack

If it will be more than one day I change the scout pack out for my Kelty internal frame backpack, northface fiberfill sleeping bag and 2 man tent.In my camping gear I have a fire kit, collapsible grill and foldable water jug.

One change to be made as I think about it. Feral hogs are rampant in south Alabama and moving north. We have had a few in my area, but not many right now. I am betting that, post apoc, wild hogs will be the main staple for hunters.

My Marlin 1895 in 45-70 goes instead of the Ruger.

All of this fine and good.
Lots of gear depends on distance, weather, terrain, target/mission, and time.
Weapons also vary from what you have and prefer for the task.

But nobody even mentioned taking a partner/team mate.
Don't know about you but nobody and I mean NOBODY in my group will go anywhere alone.

Just my opinion

You make a good point. For scavenging and scouting I would want a partner. Hunting is tough with two people, unless you are hunting from stands or blinds.

The kids and I stalk hunt all our game in twos or threes and NEVER miss our game.
It's called field craft and my kids have become as good or better than me.
Kind of humbling when a 12/14yr old gives you that " Really dad you have to sound like a herd of elephants everywhere we go?" lol

Good deal!! I love seeing Dads teach their kids to hunt.

I guess my experience was with the wrong people and having to tell them to be quiet.

@ sharpie: more for us to find later due to the weight of all that steel hampering the ability to use them properly?

@ARC I prefer to hunt alone, I don't know why I just do. I go out to hunt in groups but always seem to make the kill alone. Hunting in a group isn't a bad thing nor is one form better than the other, hunting alone is just something I do. They say not to hunt alone due to the danger to yourself. I guess one of the reasons I do it alone is that I like to give my prey a fair shot at survival.

I'm glad your teaching your kids, quite a few of my happiest memories are of my grandfather teaching me to shoot, track and hunt.
