The beginnings of a survival plan

For a long time I thought "Man, if the SHTF, we are going to be completely SOL." I kept thinking this because at the time my wife and I were just two people alone with several weak dependent small children. We could barely handle their needs, let alone navigate the aftermath of a full-blown cataclysm. Now two of these children are pre-teens, smart, capable, and almost my size. The others are catching up rapidly. So assuming they do not get infected by the zombification virus, I now have a band of reliable people. This is, I realize, an enormous asset to any survival plan. I don't have all the gear and supplies I need yet. But I am part of a young healthy group of problem solvers and producers (that is basically what a human being is - noooo, we are not just consumers - really, its true!). Now what I have to do is to make sure they are all trained and ready for the worst. There remain considerable challenges ahead, though. For instance, my eldest is convinced he can survive the zompocalypse with just a machete and a couple bottles of water. We have had long discussions about this. I am doing my utmost to get him thinking in terms of survival skills, evasion skills, planning escape routes, the differences between runners and walkers, etc.. I am trying to get through to them it will be their wits, their knowledge, and their nerve that will get them through the coming days of mayhem. Kids these days... So back to the survival plan. Training and skills development; that is the core of the plan. This weekend we are going to get out into the woods (as soon as the roads are clear - its been snowing) and try to build our first emergency survival shelter. Wish us luck! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Funny how quickly kids grow up. One minute they're in diapers the next you're tossing them the keys to the SUV.

You seem to have your head on straight and you are headed in the right direction by coming up with a plan. You're getting your son thinking about surviving a SHTF scenario. By using the zombie metaphor you got him to consider the possibilities.

As far as getting him on board with real survival planning? You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

Well . . . Scientifically, no, that's not true. Unless your kids have green skin and eat by laying naked on your roof under the sun.

Producers are organisms that utilize chloroplasts to generate energy that the organism uses uses to "make" its food.

Since we cannot photosynthesis, we are not producers but consumers.

You may be referring to our ability to plant, grow, and harvest gardens, but that does not make us producers.

Sorry, I'm taking biology . . . Can't help myself.

Nice planning. Family participation is a great thing to have in survival plans. The gear comes slowly. I, too, feel a pressing need to go out and get everything now. It is difficult to hold to my budget.

Major Props to you on the thread title "The Ultimate Survival Plan" er "The Best Plan for the Zombie Apoc" err no its, "Good Gawd Almighty Couldnt Make a Better Plan". No really refreshing to see a title like yours.

lol. No, they are definitely not green... I am using the word, of course, in terms of what we do and how we deal with our problems. Yes, I am referring to our ability to plant, grow, and harvest gardens full of actual producers. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
