Zombie opinion questions
Jan 21 2012, 5:06 PM EST | Post edited: Jan 21 2012, 5:06 PM EST
Do you think it would be okay to be in your backyard with a wooden fence (so they can't see you), and a strong chain link fence (to slow them down) to cook or do maintenance as long as you stay quiet?
Do you think that it would be a good idea to
A. Stay in a single barricaded room and wait the outbreak out and never leave
B. Barricade your entire house and and wait the outbreak out and never leave
C. Live on the roof or in the attic
Do you think that you should keep quiet, or snipe and use other methods to engage them?
Do you find this valuable?

A and B are bad ideas in general and probably for a reason most don't think about. Unless you are just a sociopath and can deal with the amount of isolation that those options are going to give you then be my guest. I know personally that i wouldn't be able to handle that. Besides, someone or a couple of people watching my back doesn't sound too bad. C isn't too bad if you cut yourself a roof access so you can get out and get some vitamin D from time to time among other things. Just remember to weather proof your attic before hand and make it livable. Heat builds up in attics amazingly well so take that into consideration. Wouldn't want to sit up there and have to decide to be zombie chow below or die from dehydration. Sniping from your roof sounds great, but remember that the report from your weapon is going to attract some attention by the living and dead. For example, I have a Mosin and that thing is probably one of the loudest firearms I've ever shot besides a Thompson Center single shot .223 pistol. Everything has a pro and con, you have to just figure out your needs and apply them to your options. Do you find this valuable?

Cook outdoors surrounded by zombies? The sound and the smell is likely to attract them.

A? You will grow crazy.
B? Better, but unless you live in a very large house, you will still go crazy.
C? You will fall off, and either dehydrate in the summer or freeze in the winter.

I agree A & B aren't ideal options you'll eventually run out of resources, unless your an extreem couponer or something - those people could outwait the sun geeze - roof or attic would also trap you espeically if you live in a well built house - what would occur if the bottom of your house was over run ........ but then again if i had no choice except a b, or c i'd choose C the attic - chace for rain water and bug and stray animals wandering in i suppose. hmm i guess keep quiet would be better than siniping becuase the sound would expose you =/ the idea of being trapped scares the hell out of me this is an interesting problem you've presented. The problem with barriers is that zombie hordes will simply continue to pile up upon each other and will eventually overwhelm whatever barrier you have erected. Do you find this valuable?

Barricading such as in "Last Man on Earth", "Omega Man", and "I Am Legend" (all three are the same story really) is, aside from being movie fantasy, considered bad because of the human need for social interaction. Babies left untouched will die. We are no longer babies. As adults we still desire human contact, but it is not a real need anymore. History is littered with individuals who have opted out of society or been lost for long periods. Hermitage is almost popular. The deprivation of human contact is indeed psychologically changing. It needn't drive one crazy however. Crusoes gain a greater appreciation for aspects of life. Hermits may have some interaction but this is usually that which couldnt be avoided. Most are considered wierd but this doesnt mean crazy.

What makes barricading, in this case, untenable is supply. Eventually one has to leave the fort to re-supply. Given that you are the hermit type. You will have to go amongst the zeds. Cooking smells and sounds are not the things to worry about. How you will deal with the zeds is. Like the hermit, dealing with zeds is unavoidable.
