Big A's Survival Plan
Jan 22 2012, 1:11 PM EST | Post edited: Jan 22 2012, 1:11 PM EST
Living in a three story house really bumps up my luck for survival. With only one flight of steps to the third floor, knocking them down and the flight to the second floor would keep any walkers from getting to me or my family. But my problem is, I live in totowa nj which is fairly close to NYC which would be crawling with zombies, plus getting food and supplies would be a real hassle once all of the supplies nearest to us run short . Best way to avoid the walkers would be to move to the country where there is no house for miles build a small fortified settlement there and farm my own food. Living next to any urban area is very dangerous in a time such as z day especially an area that has as big a population as NYC and Paterson . 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

There are two schools of thought on this. We call it "Bugging in" or Bugging out". Some say that it would be best to bug in until the panic dies down...then bug out when it is safe to do so.

Others say that you should bug out of cities or highly populated areas at the first sign of trouble. If I were you...I would want to get as far away from NYC as possible...as fast and as soon as you can. Wait around too long and you may become trapped. The undead might not wonder off when board. They might pack against the walls all around you and never leave.

Supplies are always an issue. The best thing to do is stock up on the essentials now while you still can. I keep about two weeks worth of food and water in my house at all times. I keep three days worth of food and water in the car at all times.

Keep working on your plan. Stock up now. You just might make it. Welcome to the site.

Moving to the country is a good idea, however there are more things to consider than just moving to the country and fortifying a settlement.
I'm not ragging on your plan at all as I agree, it is a part of my plan also.
I am just saying that geographical outlay has a big part to play in it. Vast open area's are risky as it could create a risky situation if walkers begin to wander. Even a fortified settlement will crumble under pressure.

Forests or mountainous ranges are a good idea, however it is important to know the area, the resources and the weather conditions of the area's in which you decide to inhabit, and you'd need to know these conditions on a seasonal scale if you wished to settle.
This requires a lot of homework before Z-day including being prepared with the correct equipment and skill sets required to survive in such environments.

If permanent settlement is something you wish to consider power and sustainability are things you may also want to think about. You could read up on, or put into practice living without power. In areas like the forest, ranges or mountains it is highly possible as a long term option.
Also, if you wanted or needed power, you could research some ideas about homemade natural power generators such as windmills or water wheels.

There are risks involved in living in these areas as well, however these are just some things you may want to consider in your plan.

A bit of advice from me would be to go about hiking or tramping on some main tacks, and then venturing off into the wild on some more unbeaten paths.

Stocking supplies is a great idea, and we too have done so however it is perhaps more important to learn how to sustain yourself in the wild as supplies will, as you have pointed out, eventually run out. Also, scavenging will become really difficult as cities and towns become more overrun. Just some pointers.
