Essential Skills: Boy Scouts
Jan 22 2012, 7:53 PM EST
You may look at this thread and think Boy Scouts and zombie survival what do they have to do with each other?! Well being a Boy scout myself I have relized that boy scouting is very helpful in learning survival skills because it teaches three main main lessons:Survival(duh) Resourcefulness First Aid All of these have taught me a great deal on how to survive. Now here is what I want to know. What do you think, do you agree or disagree with me if so why? 23 out of 25 found this valuable. Do you?

Also being a boy scout, I Have to agree with you. it will teach you some really useful stuff, and even if you never use it during something along the lines of the apocalypse, it may still save a life or two anyway. like your own. it's quite likely even.

Ive been a boy scout. Made it to First Class. My nephew recently made Eagle, Im damn proud of him. Boy Scouts is one institution that is respected nearly universally. Boy Scouts of - UK, Chile, America, Canada, etc. Nearly every country has Boy Scouts (some call 'em Guides) 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

I was a Cub Scout, a Scout and finally Venture Scout and I think my time and experience in these groups was priceless. Apart from the skills I learnt, (camping, navigation, cooking, woodlore etc) the fun, the self-discipline, the ability to work in a team and the sense of independence I experienced was great and I'd recommend anyone have a go. Join your local troop and give it your all! Just remember, a good troop wont be run like a youth club, don't go expecting to spend your evening playing games and goofing around (though that was a part of it for sure!)

I was a scout, and you are all right. The skills I learned as one have saved two lives now. I would suggest all the teenagers I see on here check out their local troop. Ive seen some troops that were near useless, and some that had some pretty amazing leaders. My scoutmaster was OSBI, we had a leader that was FBI, another leader was a police officer, and ofcourse we had a bunch of machinists and farmers. You will learn tons of useful things! Oh, and I nearly forgot. Eagle scout looks great on a resume. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Scouting doesn't stop there, alot of the things I learned out of it is more then just survival skills. What I think i got the most out of it were leadership skills and how to manage groups in various activies that needed to be done. I myself made it to life, but due to procrastination and life, I couldn't make egaleBut for those who want the skills, there are plenty for requirements and many merit badges you can do, here's some that I did : First Aid, Emergency Prep, wilderness survival, riflery, shotgun shooting, leather working, swimming, camping...those are just some but there are many many more I have not done that are neat and could be helpful, for example my brother did one I think was either smithing or Iron working (can't remember the name)...but yes, many things you learn in Scouts are going to stick with you for life, so those on the site here who are still young shoudl definately give it a try Do you find this valuable? |

Both my boys are in it. They are learning a lot. Hell, I'm learning a lot. Because I'm a Cub Scout Leader. And some of the stuff I've found in the books they have to have deals with a lot of things people wouldn't think about. I urge people to put their kids in it. I'm enjoying it and I know both my boys are enjoying it. I got one in Cub Scouts and the other in Boy Scouts.

Scouting was fun, I still have all my manuals and use them from beavers all the way up. For those of you that aren't lucky enough to have their manuals still the 1911 handbook is available for free off project gutenburg :D The 1911 is a must for survival because it contains the basics of log cabin construction and archery and other bushcraft. You can search it on their site and download it for free. The wireless telegraph and receive plans are interesting and simple to build, it contains a lot of forgotten data which would be useful in reconstruction If you just want to thumb through it heres a link http://www.gutenberg.org/files/29558/29558-h/29558-h.htm 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
