Suriviving in the shadows - thoughts by shadowmancer

My thoughts on the issue of survival in any situation are pritty much the same ensuring that i am in an area with pleantiful resources. I'm canadian so gun regulations are a tadd different and i will not be using exotic equipment beyond what i already own or can easily procure. The basis of my survival will be my pannel truck it is quite heavily modified, it currently serves as a base of operations whenever i go out hunting. It functions well offroad despite it's weight. It's fuel system is currently in the process of a redesign to reduce given weight. My equipment has been chosen based on what I already use in the wilderness, it is tested in a survival situation it seems a tadd foolish to use untried materials.

Since i currently live at the edge of town in the GTA exiting the area will not be a problem. I don't like the idea of a fixed defended possition because it limits your mobility, adaptability and becuase of the eventual decay of modern technology cities and certain rural areas will be toxic wastelands. Thinking of my general area on the edge of lake ontario there are 7 chemical plants, a nuclear reactor and an aging sewage system and massive industral areas. These constructs will eventually fail without maintence releasing their toxins into the land, the sewage system without electric pumps will be the first to fail. It is my belief due to the actions of insects and bactria any zombie would have an expiration date. This would be a point where there is not enough flesh remaining to allow for mobility. It will change depending the weather conditions and the salt content of the area becuase both hinder insect and bacterial activity.

Considering that all the reigional waters flow into the great lakes and the average the highest percent of the population of Canada lives along the great lakes this whole region will be toxic, over crowded and lacking in supplies.

It is therefore my intention to move myself farther North. As soon as i get wind of any zombie activity i will either return to my home or if already home i will load the supplies i keep into my hunting vehicle, the battlewagon, call my dog and fuel up with the ethanol i keep in my garage. Initially it is my intention to make for the lands that i usually hunt on there is ample fresh water and game in the area and i know the types of wild eddible which are in the area espeically hawberries and blueberries.

The distance from my home to my hunting grounds are more than 1200 km's from eachother. This is beyond the range considering the terrain of other evacuating people. i will expend my reserve ethanol and salvage or purchase gasoline when possible. Once i reach the denser northern forests i will load the woodgasifier, originally installed to generate power for my camp and for truck fuel due to the distances between settlements in Northern Ontario. My panel truck has been hardened already against bears. Once i reach my hunting grounds i will secure and cache my vehicle in the dense brush. Depending on the time of year I will start hunting and fishing and gathering and piling firewood to meet my needs durring the initial months. I will smoke fish gather wild eddibles such as northern pond tubers and store them in bear proof cashes. For the initial three months of the outbreak i will not leave the region. Since most depictions have Zombies as a summer event i'll go with that, however the modification in my plans would be more fish for food if it fell in winter than wild plants and game.

Since the region is isolated i will not have much of a chance of raiders however my dogs senses will alert me of anything aproching. I will begin my bushcraft activities in winter while i live in my van. These will include making cordage from natural sources such prepared cattails. Using this cordage to create fishing nets.

Would suggest throwing up some insulation and makeshift was to hold in heat in the back. Cold creeps through the steel quickly and with no underpinning it can be an ice box in no time. Purchase of a heavy winch system could help you out if your heavy truck gets stuck in winter ice or spring thaw mud. See if you can attach solar panels to the top to provide you with some electricity if you wish. Could use them to recharge batteries for the truck or other mobile devices. Would also think of tossing a mountain bike in just in case you need to make longer journeys on foot and want to expend less energy.

Even if you don't do any of that you seem to have everything covered lol.

The harsh northern winter will act as a defence for my camp, as will the strageically places piles of deadwood for fire use. I will keep the woodgasifier loaded with wood and plant my small wind turbine to keep my batteries fresh. As the wood will act as a windbreak the heating system i have installed and wool blankets should keep me and my dog warm at night and fire can be used outside . To ignite fire i will use my trusted fire piston. Placing large stones under the center of my truck will also act as a heater if i elect to construct a trench fire on extra cold nights. I will monitor my CB and my vehicles radio, it functions in both long and short wave, to determine what is going on in the general world. I've tested the radio reception in my hunting ground prior installing my vehicles kludged entertainment system. I will go out durring the day remaining mobile setting traps and checking them to increase my food reserves. Once i feel I can leave the isolation of the Northern forests i will begin to roam. I will follow the animal herds and keep up my food supplies. I will continue this nomadic lifestyle for about four years.

While on my roamings i will salvage whatever i can from any source. Many people will have died due to the cold, due to zombies, due to disease and raiders. I will be passively searching for other survivers and increasing my stores as well as my equipment, shedding less useful peices and placing them in hidden caches in case i require them later. If i find survivors whom it may be beinficial to have i may allow them to join me if they are singluar if there are mulitpul people i may join them.

If they have no where to go i will take them to my prepared area and begin construction if they have a sufficient location i will move there. My post 4.5 year plan is flexable. I have chosen to wait 4.5 years in total because of further dangers presented by the death of technology in a post collapse world.

A part most people seem to over look is the decay of nuclear reactors and waste fuel rod disposal sites. I have mapped all of them out and selcted my path avoid them and their fall out. They both require massive cooling pumps to prevent releases of radiation through combustion and the diesel backup generators to power these pumps will not have enough fuel to last more than a few weeks. Animals will alter their paths as was shown after the chernobyl disaster in The Ukraine. I will be paying attention to their movements and the patterns of birds to warn of danger, an important part of any woodlore.

Once i am sure that i am safe i will rebuild. I have selected several varieties of wild and non hybrid seed which will grow in my preselected region. This includes True potato seeds, not tubers. This is to insure the genetic diversity of the crops as seed potatoes do not keep long periods and will be a genetic bottleneck as tubers grown plants are gentically identical to the parent plant. This genetic varriablilty will also ensure resistance to disease. True seed potatos also produce a natural pesiticde/ fungicide in the potato fruit (yes they have ineddible poison fruits) all the time i will continue to forrage hunt and fish to keep up stockpiles.

Defences and construction will depend on the number of people i find or are in my adopted community. Low numbers will mean Huron style wooden fortifications ditches and felled tree obsticles. Large ground would utilize stone construction and fixed defence points across the holdings. Small stone fortifications arround key points such as was done durring the Colonial period in North America. Weapons will be constructed on site from available materials. Crossbows and bows, birch tar fire traps and other similar devices. Modern Weapons at hand would be conserved and aquired as available. There will be no chance for resupply therefore they will be conserved.

Small salvage teams will venture out into the world to gather raw materials in stealth. Hunting parties will hunt with bow and defend the area. I have mapped out in my laminated survival binder the places where natural resources unavilable in the hunting area can be obtained. River travel through the use of wooden canoe will allow for them to be aquired. I have built several birch bark canoes in my life they would seem to be ideal because the materials to construct, maintain and repair them are available in the wilds. If i do not find other survivors i will live out my days as a nomad.

Heavier peices of equipment will be salvaged via the battlewagon or any other vehicles available. The locations will be scouted out in stealth and the desired items hidden. Then the teams will take the battlewagon to salvage the equipment needed. These teams will be well armed. We will produce leather for use in clothing, gear, shoes and anything else needed. Furs will also be gathered for warmth. Brain tanning will be utilized to prep the leather for use. If i am alone, i'll live out my days as a nomad or at least until my dog died.

Mountain bike eh? not a bad idea. Guess i could use a bikerack too. Could always stand to improve the thermals..... maybe even use some of those silver survival blankets to reflect my body heat. Do you find this valuable?

I dont care if its a rip off or not, illustrations are helpful. If you want to prove its yours, put ZSDW on a piece of cardboard and hold it on the object. Really though, no one really seems to care. We have a few hundred pics uploaded. I dont recall anyone saying, "oo that looks faked."

I was thinking about how to use a vehicle as a more effective survival tool besides transportation. With a little work, I was thinking you could rig a hot water system using the heat from the engine or exhaust system. If you applied the same concept as a tankless water heater, you could wrap a small pipe around the exhaught pipe and run water through it. It should heat up pretty well and maybe work as a method to decontaminate the water. Maybe have some form of condenser to collect the steam? Idk how the whole process would work, but it seems plausible...and slightly dangerous. If done improperly, you could quickly have a steam bomb on your hands. Just a thought.
