"or it turns out to be a taurus model 66 and he shoots all of them."
Or a S&W TRR8, shoots all of them, then the one hurt the least gets another one

"I put approximately 80 rounds in a human torso at 300 meters.

WITH IRON SIGHTS.

With an M4.

Mosins, while fairly accurate at their price point, unless you get a very amazing example of one, are actually not THAT accurate."
I would also say try the AR or AK families.
I would go AR if money wasn't an issue and you want light and easy to shoot.
But if you expect to neglect it a lot go with the AKs.

Now I own two Mosins and fixed or customized lots of Mosins for people. And most I have come across has crown and or hand guard stress issues. Float the guards and redo the crown and they become easily 300m or better shooters, with iron open sights. Red dot them and not all but lots can hit man targets out to 500m and with a scope some shoot out to 700m. Most out shoot the shooter. And as a beginner gun it is great.
My M91/30 out shoots me at 500m and my M44 gets close at 450.
And at 400m the Mosin has lots more knock down than the standard 5.56 AR.
Now my Mausers shoot even better, but again I'm not a long range shooter and my limit is around 500m.
Have family that can make my Mausers reach out to 700m and that's the shooters limit not the guns. They wont shoot the Mosins. lol

But most Mosins will hit regularly at the 300-400m area with zero mods. Just restore the crown and bad stock fit. They have been used, stored, then inspected for sale, shipped, reinspected before repacking for sale to retail. Then shipped and unpacked. All that handling by people and storage has tweaked stocks and crowns. The biggest issue with any surplus weapon from overseas. It is really 1891 tech and last updated for production in 1931. So it's not a Mercedes of long range guns. Or even a great combat arm. But for ruggedness and simple function it does it job well and what more can you ask of it.

"Yeah you know I'm right, it's a mod of the AK, no you cannot do it yourself, but the factory took an AK and beefed it up to make the Saiga.

Now I'm done
"
I'm with Sharpie on this one.
The Saiga rifle is just a reworked AK so it can be imported under the stricter BATFE regs. And the Saiga 12 is just a sized up AK, strengthened, and modified to feed, shoot, and extract a standard 12ga round.
Now it,s not a AK like a M14 isn't a M1 or a M1A1 isn't a M14. But all led to the next and was just a redesign of the one before it. So a M1A1 is a redone and reworked M1 Grand just like a Saiga 12 is a redo of the AK.
Your trying to tell me a proven design would be completely abandoned when a rework is cheaper and easier. The Russians are known for using proven systems as long as they can. But the BATFE makes it harder and harder every year to import the military style weapons. So tweaking and redesigning is a must to keep costs down and production up. It's money and cents. Nothing more and nothing less.

What is your skill level with pistols, rifles. Try to get a common, inexpensive caliber or better yet a carbine that fires pistol ammo and carry the same type of pistol. For example: carbine Altec Sub 2000 in .40 with 27 round Glock magazines and carry a Glock 22 using the same ammo and magazines.
I would still encourage a range weapon. Either a 30.06, .308, 7.62x54 either of these will reach out and touch someone. But only if you are able to get a good grouping on them. No matter what your equipment is you need to know how to use it. Training is always underestimated.
Prepare well, Cardio is the first rule.
