Helicopter Possibilities
Jan 29 2012, 8:43 AM EST
My uncle is former marine core and he used to fly helicopters for the military. He's been living with me for a few months now until he can afford a place of his own, but it made me think: Would a helicopter be a good idea to have in a zombie apocalypse (providing you had someone like my uncle who knows how to fly them)? I think that once you were bugged in, you could use it as an easy source of transportation to search for food or supplies in a wider radius, and it could also be used as a quick escape if you needed to bug out. For fuel, I'm pretty sure helicopters take standard Jet A fuel, or maybe diesel. Either way, you could find the fuel at the airport and just fly right in, drop down, and load up while you have your partner(s) covering your back. What do you guys think? 12 out of 14 found this valuable. Do you?

Just steer the heck clear of helicopters and anything they represent PZD. In fact, go genocidal on they white @$$es. 0 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

Interesting question, not specifically about the helicopters but whether anyone here has any experience of 'flight operations' and can to do more than speculate. . . _ Do you find this valuable? |

Gotta admit, this question can't simply be slapped down again. I think it's gotten to a point where actual discussion is possible.I mean, sure the movies never get it right, but I'm sure it couldn't hurt if you happened to be able to fly one and owned one, too. It's very limiting, and yes, it's still kid of dangerous, but it's worth debating over. Other then running out of gas and blocked runways, what else poses a really huge threat? Are you going to get shot at? And besides, these kinds of things really shouldn't happen to experienced pilots. Do you find this valuable? |

If all of your knowledge about aircraft comes from "Well, I'm pretty sure this will work.....", don't even think about sitting behind that stick.I know a bit about flying fixed-wing aircraft, and I still would never trust myself to fly a plane unless it was the only possible escape route and not a single soul around was an actual pilot. Helicopters? Yeah, I'll just crash and die immediately. Do you find this valuable? |

However, you need to have guaranteed access to the helicopter and fuel in order to be able to rely on it. So without that, I wouldn't include it in a plan. Do you find this valuable? |

"Gotta admit, this question can't simply be slapped down again. I think it's gotten to a point where actual discussion is possible.Helicopters can take any fuel that is combustible, but no guarantees of it junking the engine. And they don't require a run-way, just a flat portion of land. I agree, problem would be at GETTING a helicopter. I'll keep that out of my plan. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Getting a helicopter? They're common enough. But maintenance and operation will kill you.Helicopters don't fly. They're so ugly they repel the air around them. There must be some black magic that makes them fly, among that a gearbox from hell, an engine designed to spin up to an exacting RPM for long periods of time, rotor blades with very fine control schemes, etc... Plus, your uncle may not know how to pilot a specific model of chopper. He probably flew a Huey variant, Chinook, or Blackhawk / Seahawk at some point. Those are high-dollar choppers, and the avionics and controls are a notch above civilian helicopters, as well as general power and handling. While he'd probably learn how to fly a commercial chopper pretty quick, it's going to be dangerous to practice during a disaster. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Helicopter and flight skills would be a great advantage but I think only for getting the hell out of Dodge if your base got overrun. Flying out and returning, with how loud a copter can be, you'd draw all nearby Zeds right to your door so that the only way out would be that copter. If I was set up in a functional base, I wouldn't leave it until I had to and with a copter, I'd head out to find me a nice farm house out in the sticks hopefully with no barns with Sophies in them. Was talking to some CWO's and regardless of what they ended up flying, they all trained on Kiowa helicopters which are about the "simpilest" ones to fly. They said it was all about the basics and that the skills you learn their generally apply to the others.Hung out in one, started it up and played with the throttle a bit but wind conditions didn't let us get off the ground. Biggest thing I learned? Leave that sucker on the ground unless you know what the heck you're doing! Sometimes the fuel dump switch is next to the electricity on switch(I didn't hit it, but he said it's the most common mistake for people starting out). But if you find yourself trapped with no way out, why not give it a shot lol? Do you find this valuable? |
