From a Sarajevo War Survivor

From a Sarajevo War Survivor:Experiencing horrible things that can happen in a war - death of parents and friends, hunger and malnutrition, endless freezing cold, fear, sniper attacks. 1. Stockpiling helps. but you never no how long trouble will last, so locate near renewable food sources. 2. Living near a well with a manual pump is like being in Eden. 3. After awhile, even gold can lose its luster. But there is no luxury in war quite like toilet paper. Its surplus value is greater than gold's. 4. If you had to go without one utility, lose electricity - it's the easiest to do without (unless you're in a very nice climate with no need for heat.) 5. Canned foods are awesome, especially if their contents are tasty without heating. One of the best things to stockpile is canned gravy - it makes a lot of the dry unappetizing things you find to eat in war somewhat edible. Only needs enough heat to "warm", not to cook. It's cheap too, especially if you buy it in bulk. 6. Bring some books - escapist ones like romance or mysteries become more valuable as the war continues. Sure, it's great to have a lot of survival guides, but you'll figure most of that out on your own anyway - trust me, you'll have a lot of time on your hands. 7. The feeling that you're human can fade pretty fast. I can't tell you how many people I knew who would have traded a much needed meal for just a little bit of toothpaste, rouge, soap or cologne. Not much point in fighting if you have to lose your humanity. These things are morale-builders like nothing else. 8. Slow burning candles and matches, matches, matches Do you find this valuable? |

All good points, are YOU the survivor, or did you get this from one?I 100% agree on the Gold, everyone says gold increase in value in a crisis, well who the hell is gonna give away food for a piece of pretty metal? Hey, if they want gold for some TP, I'd gladly give away the heavy lump of nothing Do you find this valuable? |

Gold is only good if its just a economic collapse and the govt is mostly intact. Lose govt and gold losese value compared to just eating.@bytes-Thanks all good info. My grandpa said they read westerns, super hero, fantasy, crime, ect just not war novels while he served in WWII. He said the escape from the now was great. Also music, cards, and small games helped alot. Even stupid Hollywood movies were a great but short escape. The gravy idea is great. Had lots of bouillon and some instant gravy. But now will add even more. Have about 20 12hr emergency candles plus a couple cases of assorted candles. Also a few boxes of matches, and other fire starting supplies. But you just convinced me its not enough. Again thanks. As for toilet paper, soap, shampoo, body wash, deoderant, toothpaste, ect. That my wife does and right now I have almost a years supply of. She is a super coupon shopper and usually brings home a month of each every week at under half cost. lol Do you find this valuable? |

interesting read Its funny how some thing like a cake of soap can be worth so much when you haven't seen one for a long time As my father told me once "a can of asparaguses could get you a pound of flour if you found some one that really wanted it and a block of chocolate could get you many things and many a favor from the ladies" Do you find this valuable? |

"Just call me Mr. Goodbar if thats the case ;-DPeople will do almost anything for things they really just cant deal without. It may sound stupid but women would do almost anything for pantyhose, chocolate, coffee, tea, sugar, real beef, and cigarettes to name a few things during WWII. Some of them sound stupid but thats human nature and what they think is more important. I heard of ladies in concentration camps doing anything to look pretty while they were slowly starving to death. Even heard about a woman turn in others so she could get a bath a clean clothes before she got executed(gassed). Just so she would be look good and feel civilized (good) one last time and in death. Thats life and people for you. Do you find this valuable? |

Mujo and Suljo are running over the Drvenija bridge when a sniper opens up on them. Mujo takes a hit which shears off his ear. He stops frantically in the middle of the bridge looking at the ground. Suljo yells, “Get under cover, idiot! You’ve got two ears!” Mujo: “Yea but my last cigarette was behind that ear!" Two things are illustrated by that, the value of scarce luxuries and the importance of humor. _ Do you find this valuable? |

"Mujo and Suljo are running over the Drvenija bridge when a sniper opens up on them. Mujo takes a hit which shears off his ear. He stops frantically in the middle of the bridge looking at the ground.OMG that's hilarious lol! Now that I've regained my composure, I want to be serious for a sec... Honestly, it doesn't take long for a person to get that desensitized to the horrors of war. With no social structure to reinforce civil behavior, loneliness and stress, people can sink real low real fast. There was a story that I read that said during the siege of Staringrad, people were with so little food and amenities, that bands of men would roam the streets looking for people walking around by theirselves and would kill and eat them. This isn't new material. Even in the Old Testement their are stories of time getting rough for years and people turning on each other. I'm using these examples to show to what lengths will be taken if time gets real hard. About snipers post apoco. I would recommend learning how to look for good shooting locations when you're driving around. Read a book, field manual or whatever, but learn how to tactically move from location to location by any means of transportation. Other survivors are going to be out there too and you don't know thier mental, emotional or moral state when you meet them. They might think you're a zombie or just want your stuff. Be on the lookout and unless you have a big time deadline, move slow and methodical. Beeing under the threat of a well trained sniper is the very definition of fear. Thank you for sharing. Congratulations on your survival, you have my sympathies for your sorrows. Do you find this valuable? |
