I would suggest you make your posts longer. They're kinda not worth going there as it is.

The 'Gross miscalculation' in that story isn't the forgetting to take batteries for your GPS but your understanding of the nature of life rafts and the difference between them and other kinds of vessels that are designed to 'go somewhere'.

If you need to abandon a vessel the life raft is designed to keep you alive until help arrives. Help in the form of search and rescue would be looking for you in circles from your last reported or estimated position.

The life raft is meant to maintain that position with minimum risk which is why they usually have built in sea anchors (which also help stick the thing to the surface and reduce the risk of capsizing it) and those 'designed into the underwater shape' sea anchors mean - your going nowhere quickly except down current.

So your GPS unit might give you something to play with while you wait but if you have no control over where you are going then knowing where you are is academic.

recommend stealing a life-BOAT.

[edit] and as you seem to be 'stuck of a f**king' cruse ship why not try to get something out of it? Ask the purser if the ship does seminars in navigation, (its a cheap itinerary filler for cruises as they have the people there anyway) Chat your way into the engine room if they don't do a tour - big engines, and we are talking house sized units are f**king awesome, and again you just might learn something. Ask the purser if you can watch all the safety training videos that I think would be the first officers responsibility, they keep them all on board for new crew members . . .

your scathing review and critique was very intelligent and enjoyable reading.
although I am aware of the state of life boats on cruise ships and i am aware they are as you described. but it is in diary format from the point of view of a teen who does not know the difference between life raft and life boat.(i should of written it better). also his life boat theft was not out of boredom but a cry for help aimed towards an uncaring father and it was a emergency gps beacon, the protagonist did not know what the beacons technical names was. but thank you for the intelligent review keep reading there will be zombies and the story become a conventional third person story

That was merely terse, though we can do scathing if you wish ; )

In truth it was as much a response to the many postings on this forum from folk who have ideas about escaping on the water and have no idea how perilous that would be without the necessary knowledge, experience or preparation. If the whole blog is written in character - well you fooled me so I guess you have some talent at writing. So good luck.

As to 'leaving' a cruse ship on a stolen lifeboat/raft, they are most likely alarmed. And when the alarm goes off the ships crew would automatically begin a 'J' manoeuvre for man-overboard.
