BOB for the ladies...
Feb 3 2012, 4:24 AM EST | Post edited: Feb 3 2012, 4:24 AM EST
I decided to help one of my female friends start a BOB and was wondering what the women on this site (or the men packing for their wife or gf) would suggest. Do you find this valuable?

First person I would check with would be Maricely. She'll be back on Saturday.

Until Maricely gets back to enlighten us properly (yes, she would be who I would ask too) I would make my decisions for BOB contents the same as I do for myself with the addition of a few feminine hygiene products. Those decision points are the "Essential 4", anticipated duration, and the individual's endurance.

I do have to agree with Zee Man though. Most bob's should be pretty much the same between men and women. It's kind of like asking what's the difference between a ladies EDC and a male's. Can't be that much difference between the two. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Unless you're asking specifically if we know of any packs/bags that are good for women, the above is about it. Do you find this valuable?

I'm not sure about that. Not being sexist (just a realist) women and men are different. I'm 6'5" and 240lbs and I wouldn't even dream of making a bag for a woman to my standards. I mean, i can put most women I know in my duffle bag and walk all day lol. Plus I know that women have different hygiene issues and this was a concern for me during this project.

To Lady A, Let's say 18-30 for age with slightly above average athleticism.

Other than feminine hygiene products, it shouldn't really be different than a BOB for a man of the same size and fitness level. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I was thinking that as well, but idk what a lady would pack for what could be a REALLY long camping trip. I'm sure I could put together a decent package together by myself. Just really wanted to get the info from the source.

A BOB should only last you a few days; it's meant to last you until you can get to a secure location, so weight and size are important to consider.

True. I packed mine to last for around 5-6 days with some things that if I had to abandon my BOL. I'm about 20 miles from it. My maps say I should be able to walk it in 6. Taking how methodical I'll probably have to move I'm giving myself 18. That's if I can't just drive there of course. That takes 30min.
Honestly, I would like her to have one that would last about the same time. If on foot, I have a bunch of danger zones to go through and I would like for her to have enough stuff in case we run into any complications.

I know from backpacking with ladies in the past, that what you don't want is a tall pack, but a low pack. Guys carry weight from their shoulders, with the belt primarely to stabalize the load. Girls carry weight from the hips, with the shoulder to balance the load.

Thus, a pack with a heavy tent or something like that up top is a no go. They will exhaust themselves staying ballanced. Put most of the weight down in the bottom of their pack and keep the top light (opposite of a guy's load).

Hygene requirements are stricker for girls, not because they are prissy, but because external equipment is less prone to infections - so don't just think about that monthly visitor. Several clean handtowls or banadannas in seperate ziplock bags for general hygene will provide important psychological benefits (even when all that is washed is face and hands).

Girls squat for eveything and there TP needs are double that of a man's, so stick in an extra roll or two that.

Girls are color oriented (gatherer, rather than hunter genes). M&Ms or Skittles in the trail mix, fruit cocktail with the red cherries, or anything else you can do to brighten up a dull colored trail meal will improve appetite - and girls are prone to loosing appetite on trail, particularly due to constipation, so keep the fiber ratio higher than for males as well.

Other than that, I can't think of anything I have come across.

Oh yes, beware of the smellables - perfume, deoderant, skin lotion, chapstick, make-up, and a host of other products that are more common to the female gender (the the shemale gender of those girly city boys) often contains scents that will make them bug bait.

Some very nice thoughtful stuff coming in. I can't wait to get the ladies' view in this thread. Then the main points should be added to a regular page.

Sorry it took me so long guys, me and LJ have been without internet for a week. It's been hell. Anyway, I don't have much to add, you guys pretty much covered it all. A woman's BOB should contain the basics for survival for a couple days, just throw in a form of feminine hygiene products (preferably reusable softcups), and a form of birth control if necessary. Also, the bag should be comfortable for her form, as others have said. If it has chests straps, make sure they're high enough. Other than that, just make sure you include the woman while making the BOB so she can be familiar with the contents and comfortable using them. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Thanks Maricely. I'll definitely keep everyone's suggestions in mind while I try and get this done.

It's been brought up before, but I'm packing one of those "pee-standing-up" widgets. (I can never remember it's actual name!) The advantages should be obvious. And they're available for cheap at any camping outfitter. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
