Just the .22 handgun I've been waiting for.
Feb 4 2012, 1:43 PM EST
http://www.ruger.com/products/sp101/models.htmlThe Ruger SP101 now comes in .22lr with an 8 rnd capacity. I've had my heart set on a Ruger Single-Six for a while now because I hadn't been able to find a double action .22 revolver that wasn't out of my price range. This handgun is pretty pricey but not nearly as expensive as S&W's offerings. Why a .22 revolver over a semi-automatic? Not as finicky about ammo as a semi-auto and the ability to shoot .22 shorts, .22 longs and .22lr as well as .22 shot shells. If you have a miss-fire you simply cycle to the next round. Just fits the criteria I've been looking for in a .22 handgun. Any suggestions or opinions on other .22 handguns out there and what would you be looking for in a .22 pistol? Which do you like better in a rim-fire handgun? A single-action revolver, a double-action revolver or a semi-auto pistol? Why? I'm on a rimfire kick right now. Affordable ammo means more time spent shooting. Do you find this valuable?

I am thinking of getting the GSG 1911-.22 for cheap semi auto practice, I'd get the Tac version because it comes with a fake silencer, my GF likes the look of it.I might look at this SP101, seems really cool, I saw a single-ten at the gun show but it was expensive, so I passed it up Do you find this valuable? |

That is pretty awesome. It's been a while since a mainstream manufacture has produced a DA .22 revolver.

My loser friend who trolls me on this site wants a SP101 .22 badly, but is too tight to part with $600 some dollars they want for them. Not that I can blame him there. His experiences are evidence that the belief that revolvers are more reliable than semi autos does not always hold true. Both of the .22 revolvers he has owned have failed. I forget the brand of the first, but its timing got screwed up, and his latest, a Charter Arms, has had a couple of problems, such as trouble rotating the cylinder and the indexing tab (?) breaking off, leaving it a paperweight. Granted, these were cheap brands, but a Ruger MKii or MKii or a Browning Buckmark (which he is after now) can be had for half as much as a SP101 .22. Yes, there are mags to lose now, but I've had nothing but good luck with my MKii, and its a dream to shoot with the Hogue grips. Neither of us can justify paying near AR prices for a .22 revolver. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Yeah, the SP101 in .22 looks nice. Especially since they're actually starting to put good sights on 'em.Edit: In terms of suggestions, a lot of people love the Ruger and Browning Autos. I got a Ruger MkI (1972 vintage) for Christmas, and it works great. Although, I kinda prefer .22 revolvers better. They're less finicky about ammo. Ideally, a Smith 17 or 18 (or any of the stainless models) are excellent. Do you find this valuable? |

Just bought the Ruger SR-22 pb 22lr semi-auto. Took it out to the range with about about eight different brands of ammo and this baby feed all of them. Great all around handgun for about $350

I've got a S&W 22A once I swapped the plastic grips for some decent ones it actually feels like a real gun now. I can totally understand the advantages of a revolver but since it was a gift I can't really complain. Like having 10 round clips though. And the fact that you can swap out the 8 inch target barrel for a 4.5 inch barrel like changing uppers.

I own a ruger single six in .22/22mag and i just like the way it handles sure its a touch slow for reloading and is only a single action how ever i have never had any trouble with it Being able it swap out the cylinder and use .22mag is a feature i like about it sure the .22mag is no 357mag but i still wouldn't like to take a round to the chest or head at close range I guess the one thing i do like the most with a rim fire revolver is it will use any brand of ammunition i feed it even the cheap and nasty stuff with bumpy projectiles it has no effect on it functioning although it does suck to unload it I can see why some of the nice semi auto .22's appeal to people i was looking at a kimber .22 target pistol the other day it had a nice feel to it and was a pretty smooth looking pistol kind of looked like 1911 that some one had washed in hot water and it had shrunk Do you find this valuable? |

"I'll admit that's one of the definite advantages in a revolver especially the ones like the single six that you can swap out cylinders in. There's only 1 .22mag semi-auto that i know of. I've got a .22mag rifle and i've dropped a 100 pound wild hog with it. You have to be more precise with it but it forces you to be a better shooter. Do you find this valuable? |

"My loser friend who trolls me on this site wants a SP101 .22 badly, but is too tight to part with $600 some dollars they want for them. Not that I can blame him there. My guy can sell me one for just under $500. He sells at gun shows and out of his garage with little overhead so he charges 10% more than what he pays for the gun plus S&H. What you mentioned about lower end DA .22 revolvers is exactally why I've stayed away from Taurus and Charter Arms offerings. I'll most likely wait a while and see what kind of feedback I get on the reliability and accuracy of this firearm. I plan on handing down certain purchases I make so I don't mind taking a few extra months to put away some 10s here and some 20s there. My son and daughter will be glad I did someday. Even if they decide not to get into shooting sports they'll hopefully have a firearm that's went up in value not down. I like Ruger's Mark 3 Target model. Hogue grips are a must. Nice weapon. However, I can't see (personally) putting $500 into a .22 revolver that isn't even a magnum. MAYBE on a really good rifle like a Henry lever action, but those you can still get for between $300 & $400.

"Typical Timber . . . Of any .22 pistol in the world, he goes for a revolver pistol . . ."Now now, revolvers in .22 aren't picky when it comes to ammo. With many pistols you need the expensive .22 ammo to feed reliably, revolvers will eat anything from the low quality .22 shorts, rat shot, long, to the high quality .22 LR. Some, like my Ruger Single-Six, will also shoot Magnum, i can fire 4 types of ammo through my revolver or differing qualities, try that with a semi auto Do you find this valuable? |

"My guy can sell me one for just under $500. "Well you can spend less like I did and get something like this [from my profile] http://image.wetpaint.com/image/1/HBrX4llRgik7Kwhb7phBsw358108 A Colt Police Positive .22 Target revolver, 6 inch barrel, made in the later 1920s and in Excellent Pus condition. Has one of the best triggers of any handgun I have shot and is way more accurate then I can shoot it. I think probably only a few boxes of ammo was shot in it before I got it a couple years ago, I've shot probably over 1,000 rds in it and never any trouble. I like it because I can shoot CB longs in it and plink off my back porch with out anyone hearing me I had a near identical Police Positive in 38 special and one in 32 20 with the 4 inch barrel already so when I got the chance to buy the 22 for $350 I went for it though hated to pay that much The fellow I got it from has a Colt Huntsman .22 auto pistol he wants to sell me, about mint in box, but asking $450. Haven't made up my mind yet Do you find this valuable? |

"Not everyone is as lucky as you and can't find good guns for dirt cheap"Why not ? I don't think it is so much luck...I have bought way to many guns at good prices to think it is just "luck" ...but rather you just have to get out and look for good deals While I think things for the most part sell pretty high on Gunbroker [thats why I sell on it] in just 2 minutes of looking I found this Colt 22 Police Positive you could have bought for $290 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=267855788 Been refinished but looks like it would make a good shooter Of course the person selling it probably paid less then the $290 he started it at., kind of interesting that it didn't sell probably has more to do with his poor photos and lack luster description then the gun not being worth the $290 Do you find this valuable? |

Personally I like the NAA Minis, but it's mainly because they are so tiny and easily concealable. Like the Single Six, an NAA Mini is available with interchangeable cylinders in .22LR and .22mag rounds. They are single action only, but I haven't been able to find a SA/DO or a DO-Only in a comparable size. I would prefer an SA/DO, but all the ones I've seen are too big (for what I want, that is). Do you find this valuable? |

"Typical Timber . . . Of any .22 pistol in the world, he goes for a revolver pistol . . .".22 LRs are inherently unreliable, so a revolver in theory may make more sense than an autoloader. You get a dud, you just snap onto the next cylinder. I might note that a pistol is not a revolver. A pistol has a single chamber. A revolver has more than one chamber by design. That aside, I don't see how the price is ridiculous. Most factory pistols are about $500 to $900 these days. Nobody cares about paying $500 for a Glock, or another $200 for a .22 conversion, or $500 for a Single Six, etc. If it's a Ruger revolver, I don't doubt the quality and you'll more than likely get your money's worth. It's a shame they don't plan on releasing the SP101 in .22 WMR. Do you find this valuable? |

"You never know. If enough people contact them and ask for it, they might give it a go.Did some mild footwork on forums, and while you have to take any online testimony with a grain of salt, the people who asked Ruger were given a plain "no" due to difficulties in extractor design, apparently. And since Ruger made a previous version of the .22 LR SP101 a few years ago, I can imagine they gave .22 WMR a try at some point. Do you find this valuable? |
