New indie Zombie Game - Zombie Colony! (Help Wanted)
Feb 5 2012, 1:50 AM EST
I know the zed wiki isn't really a place to use as personal advertising space, but I recently got saddled with a heck of a project.Zombie Colony is quite simply, the zombie game that lot of ZSDW members have wanted to build for several years now. A survival-based, multiplayer FPS with strategy elements. But we're pretty short on actual people to make models for HL2, maps and such, so if anybody could lend a hand or reference us a good animator / modeler or source of free stuff, it'd help immeasurably. Of course, you can also comment about the good and bad aspects of the idea here, as I post updates on the concept. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Unfortunately, I have no experience whatsoever in gaming beyond playing HL2, and while I have looked at PC mods and such, I don't have the time to try them out at the moment. My main question regards the primary NPC- are you going to stick with the headcrab sprites for the zombies, or change them, and are there going to be different types (standard, fast etc)? Wish I could contribute, and I will be watching with interest. Do you find this valuable? |

Well . . . I plan on going to college to be a video game designer, and I had a zombie survival MMORPG planned, so I have a buttload of ideas . . . If you want, I can list them out. However, thus far, I have little experience and skill with coding and 3d modeling.Do you find this valuable? |

Headcrabs, guns, character models are just placeholders to test the gameplay and coding. Eventually, we're going for unique humanoid zombies.

Raiders are planned - wouldn't be very realistic otherwise. As are recruit-able NPCs and whatnot.

As a start to the "realistic zombie" sprite, the Killing Floor sprites for the clot and the scrake (minus chainsaw) would seem good starting points. The sprites themselves may be copyrighted, but they'd be good starting points.Edit: F****** ipod autocorrect typos, sorry Do you find this valuable? |

I don't especially like clots myself, but we're probably going to be very resident-evil inspired as far as decay, appearance and whatnot goes.

"I don't especially like clots myself, but we're probably going to be very resident-evil inspired as far as decay, appearance and whatnot goes."I was refering to the original skins in the reatil version, though I agree that the resident evil skins are very good. The original KF mod skins are a bit bloody and fairly crude, but they could work. I hope there's going to be no resi-esque worms popping out when you headshot a zombie. You say it's first person- is there going to be a fallout-style 3rd person camera as well? Just for the record, I prefer it in first person only, as to me, it increases the immersion, making for a better game. Do you find this valuable? |

Some aspects of the game with have third person camera, such as coordinating defenses and some types of building, maybe using home-made emplacements and whatnot, but it's primary first person.

Sorry man I can't help you out but this is seriously sounding like an awesome project! Is this going to be a free game, a game you can buy on something like Steam, or is it kind of going to be both, like Zombie Pandemic?AK Do you find this valuable? |

If it gets anywhere, it might be a purchase game, but that's a slim maybe. Do you find this valuable? |

"If it gets anywhere, it might be a purchase game, but that's a slim maybe."Well, I can see most of the community with a steam account playing it, and probably a few who aren't on here as well. Potentially a decent source of new recruits, as soon as we beat the mall ninja out of them.. Might be just the kick up the @$ I need to get meself a steam account, too. Do you find this valuable? |

The first few builds will be on the Half Life 2 engine. However, I'm hoping to move the code over to the Alien Swarm engine, which means the game will be totally free. Alien Swarm is free for downloading on Steam.(I'm the programmer, by the way) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Since it's relevant to the multiplayer aspect, what sort of leveling / persistence systems do you guys like?

Having classes with some unique atributes, but some that cross-over between classes too. I also like the idea of an "advancement tree", like in borderlands, where you unlock some things before others, and can choose to either be a strong specialist or a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none kind of player. Anything which rewards you for doing what you're supposed to (not necessarily just killing zeds, perhaps building shelters for homeless survivors and other such acts could net you some points)
