I would have already moved back to WV by this time. I know the landscape and environment- plus I know how the "critters" operate...quite proficient in hunting, fishing, gathering, ect. I know the place well- I grew up there. Growing my own garden and hunting my own food won't be a problem.

Also notice I did not put a gun of any sort. I don't use them- and considering the noise they make: its a good idea not to. It draws too much attention and could bring more zombies to my location. A bow? Quick and silent. I will have to retrieve my arrows, though.

I would suppose a handgun would be practical JUST IN CASE- but if a zombie got THAT close to me- that hatchet would do just fine, too.

Oh- and I forgot my cane. Need that. NEED IT. I have a club foot- so after so much walking around- I need help. Also could double as a club!

Humans (and barring a mutation zombies) are not that good at pinpointing sound.

However I would try to stock at least a .22.

You can buy .22 bullets by the truckloads for little cash.

However if you can stay discreet (away from potential hostiles) a bow would serve fine.

Looks good but what if you need to evacuate your location?

Agree with Carn about the guns and noise, we're not that good at detecting where it came from. And a .22 wouldn't carry far, and with a hatchet you could get zombie blood on you and get infected Do you find this valuable?

Assuming I get where I planned to be in the first place- I shouldn't have a need to evacuate. I grew up in a backwater little town in WV- just a couple miles out and there is NO ONE. I know the woods in that area so well I could set it up where I'd probably never see another human or zombie again.

If I had to escape, I'd probably still somehow manage to take all that crap with me just in smaller amounts. I already carry around a crap load of stuff with me (my purse is like 20 lbs...seriously) so it wouldn't bother me. Plus, I'm also assuming my fiancee is still alive and with me.

(He would probably have like 6 guns LOL- he was a sharpshooter in the military so he would be great for hunting or picking off zombies!

Okay next question:

What if your base is compromised?

I'm asking because redundancies are a survivor's bread and water and the more responses you have to What If the netter off you'll be.

Do you have a big out bag?

Bug out bag? Nope. I mean...I used to ( I called it my emergency kit though...BOB is a new term for me) but my ex long stole that...and yes, even the lady stuff...he didn't care. He took almost all of my belongings and left me to rot in the city. Never replaced it. It had a first aid kit (gauze, ace bandages, band aids, tweezers, pain killers, antiseptic wipes, ankle brace, muscle rub, rubbing alcohol, antibotic ointment, and anti-fungal) matches, 2 lighters, a flint, duct tape, 2 knifes (one was a butterfly knife the other was swiss army), a knife sharpener, a compass, a bottle of water, a bag of trail mix (yeah..I love the stuff), 6 feminine pads, 1 sewing kit, 1 eyeglass repair kit, 1 tin can (small one), 2 pairs of underwear, 1 bra, 1 set of clothes (jeans and t-shirt), 2 pair socks, and a thermal long sleeve. I had it all in a big back pack.

If my base IS compromised...well..I'd leave. Isn't that the smart thing to do? There are so many places in WV to fall back to that the options are nearly limitless. I may come back to retrieve supplies in a day or so...I'm assuming without any human activity that zombies would get dis-interested and wander elsewhere. If not, oh well...guess its time to move on.

"What if you and your future hubby get separated and and someone is trying to pick you off at range"
If hubby and I get separated, I have enough survival skills on my own to survive. In reality, other than the hunting/shooting aspect he would be completely dependent on me. He doesn't know a thing about survival (even though he was in the military...it was only reserves...). I would have to lighten my load considerably, but it shouldn't be an issue.

We've already had this discussion...if he or I gets bit, its over. Neither of us wants to die and come back as a zombie and have given each other full permission to kill the other.

Why would someone- a human- be trying to pick me off at range? That doesn't make any sense for humans killing unbitten humans. And if they did, I assume I'd be dead. WV has some of the best hunters I've ever seen....its all they do because there isn't much else to do (where I grew up the nearest city is a 45 minute drive away).

Don't care what happens after that. Cuz...you know...I'd be dead. Game over. Hope someone finds my gear and gets some use out of it.

Raiders? Gang members? Slave traders? Either of the 3, I think, would give their partners covering fire to find you, I think you should have some sort of gun, but to each his (or her) own.

Kind of a morbid approach though don't you think? "if I die w.e, nothing I can do" what if there was something you could do?

I can see your point. My man should have me covered unless like previously stated he's gone. I was looking at this from the view of being completely alone. If I'm dead, what CAN I do? Except...you know...be dead.

In any case, my fiancee and I discussed it for a few hours and he's got me convinced to at least carry a sidearm. I'm really not big on guns (and you'd think I would be considering where I was raised...good ol' WV) because eventually they'll stop working and ammo will run out. With a bow, the ammo is essentially unlimited provided you know how to make your own arrows.

Also...I'm kind of a morbid person. Death and destruction don't phase me much.

I'd also like to add duct tape to the above list...and I suppose a handgun of my fiancee's choosing (he's ex-military..like I said..got a better idea of what to pick than me) along with at least 200 rounds.

Exactly what kind of bow were you planning on using? Because with most modern compound bows or crossbows, making your own arrows is generally inadvisable. One small mistake or use of the wrong material can send splinters everywhere.

If you have a lot of experience making them, or have taken classes to do so, that's different. But it's generally more refined than people think.

Sorry! I've been so busy lately. My sister's father taught me when I was young to shoot bows....his was a homemade longbow. I never did it myself, but I watched him make two bows and countless arrows. Its been awhile...but with some practice, I could shoot again (I wasn't perfect of course...I was a kid).

I also had planned on taking some lessons to help- since it was so long ago. Lol listen to me talking like I'm an old, old lady....

Oops! Forgot to tell you: sister's dad was a trapper for a living...weird I know...Michigan. The town was about 500 people tops. He had all these fox, squirrel, raccoon, possum, rabbit, deer, and even few bear pelts all over the place. It was weird....and they always ate the meat of the animal they caught (except the possum...he always said, "Never eat a scavenger. You never know when its been eating infected flesh." Which is kind of ironic considering where I'm posting this :D lol! Anyways, with guns I'm just not a big fan of the noise in the situation. In the beginning when all is chaos...I'm sure it will come in handy. Later on, however, it could end up causing me a lot of unwanted attention. Truth is, we don't know how the zombie virus would alter the infected...how good their sight, hearing, or sense of smell is. How fast they will be.

Scary stuff.
