Essential Equipment for Vehicles
Feb 9 2012, 12:58 AM EST | Post edited: Feb 9 2012, 12:58 AM EST
We already have a thread regarding the selection of a suitable vehicle for those of us who don't like the idea of trying to make it where we are.

This thread is for discussing what kinds of things you want INSIDE your car (or perhaps bolted to the outside) that will help you survive.

Here are a few I can think of quickly:

- Jerry cans and carrier. Extra gas is always good
- Fullsize spare tire, jack, lug wrench
- Mini air compressor. A small leak doesn't mean you have to swap in your spare if you have a compressor to fill up when it gets low. Also good for varying your tire pressures (down for dirt, up for pavement).
- All tools common to your vehicle (or at least a pair of screwdrivers, pliers, some wrenches, and a socket set)
- DUCT TAPE.
- MORE DUCT TAPE. (preferably second roll is camo color)
- protein bars and water pouches. they'll keep forever.
- rope

So far I have only got the rope in the back of my car. I was looking around for some duct tape yesterday. I searched everywhere, turns out finding duct tape in Australia is like trying to find piece of hay in a needle stack. Difficult and painful.
Some other things to put in.
-First aid kit.
-Scrap cloth or towel for wiping inside of window (if the need arises)
-compact jack lift

"1. First aid kit.

1. Definitely. Need to assemble a first aid kit for the UEV soon, otherwise I would just grab one of my spare IFAKs.
2. I got a dirty old t-shirt, but shop rags are cheap and can be used for wounds and for the ladies during that time of the month. Good idea.
3. I got two jacks, one hydraulic 8 ton bottle jack and one light scissor jack. I would like to get one of those off-road Hi-Lift jacks tho.

Duct tape is hard to get in Australia? Dude, I was just at the store and they have a PALLET of duct tape in every different color imaginable LOL want me to send you some?

Depending on where you are in the world, snow chains could be invaluable. Likewise, stick-up binds for the windows in a hot country would be a great addition. In all cases, a small fire extinguisher is always good to have, and maybe put in a duplicate BOB, it you have the time/money/inclination/all three, so that if you're out and about somewhere and you lose your BOB, you can cut and run for your car, and not lose everything. Failing that, I would say that a small axe, and a "survival box" (2 stacking Billy cans containing items such as a multi-tool, fishing line etc.) are absolute minimum.

Edit: I meant Billy cans, not jerry cans

Yeah as far as I know the only place that stocks duct tape is Bunnings warehouse. (which is pretty much equivalent to your Lowes, I am lead to believe.) I don't really get to go there often either! The only color of duct tape I have seen here is silver also! Might have to take a trip to get a couple of rolls.
You know, in your first post I didn't know if you were serious when you said "MORE DUCT TAPE. (preferably second roll is camo color)" I didn't have any idea you could get different colors!
I don't really trust scissor jacks that much, after I watched my dads head get pinned underneath a car after his scissor jack failed, sort of put me off them.

Yep they make camo duct tape. And checkered flag, all the highlighter neon colors, zebra, leopard, olive drab... LOL whatever you want!

Here's pink zebra:

http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=203032208&storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=203032208&cm_mmc=shopping-_-googlebase-_-D24X-_-203032208

And I have the same mistrust of scissor jacks. It is just easier and faster for a tire change than to get the bottle jack under there. I use the bottle jack for actually crawling under the car.

Wow that is so damn cool! Maybe I will have to order some online! I would love some olive drab! That pink zebra is so funny, I wonder how that sells!
Yeah I would only use one for tire changes but I could never trust it enough to go under it!
Also some other things to add..
- Jumper Cables. (Just in case)
- Maybe put a multi-tool or swiss army knife in as well for basic utility.

Definately get a Hi lift jack, It can do some amazing stuff...even jack up a vehicle.
I would carry two full size spares and a puncture repair kit.

A couple universal radiator hoses and a spare serpentine belt

A good tow strape and a snatch block and tackle along with a come-along

A better than stock lug wrench...AND if your spare is the style that goes up under the vehicle make sure you have the damn rod and key (if it's a ford) to get it, I got a flat over the weekend and thankfully I had the key and a stranger (who happened to have just gotten off work from the Costco tire shop, and his brother with the Chevy style spare rod) helped me out.

I have most of the things said, I too want a hilift jack, just bought a scissor jack to replace the damn stock bottle jack thats a total pita

Run-flat, stop leak, couple quarts of oil, a gun, bullets for gun, jumper cables, flash light, candles, tow rope. I bought one of those wal-mart kits for like $20. It had the tow rope, run flat, jumper cables, flash light and a mini tool set. Plus a small detachable first-aid kit (basically junk)
I tossed in a second mini glove box car tool kit (some cheap x-mas gift) two first aid kids (1 army vehicle kit, OD green in the hard plastic case; and the 120 piece walmart kit), my SIG 229 with 2 magazines, and a little metal cookie tin with some candles and granola bars, 2 bottles of water, emergency blanket type stuff. I had some quarts of oil wrapped in a plastic bag, but I used them on my last oil change and haven't replaced them. I don't carry spare gas in my car, there's just no good way to do that.
They make a foam you can fill your tires with to make them puncture proof, i bet it plays merry hell with your vehicles ability to absorb the shock of bumps and uneven roads, and gas milage; but when getting a flat could mean life-or-death that might be worth it. Might not be needed now, but have in the garage in case. I filled up my lawn mower's tires with it after putting some large punctures from cut down saplings and never had a flat tire again.

Women need duct tape too....

And I would totally pick some of that up if I was in Australia. My local DIY store only does silver stuff.

Definitely need to add a 12 volt cooler.

Imagine, it's the apocalypse, zombies everywhere... you're on the run...

...and you got the last cold beer left on earth.

Yeah...spare tire in a can spooge.

It will seal small holes as opposed to repeatedly pumping them up

Spare bulbs (plus tools to use them) are compulsory in many European countries along with Hi-Viz vest, warning triangle etc, that also happen to be a pretty good idea.

Personally I keep a two foot 3/4inch extension bar in the drivers map pocket, its small enough to use inside the car and 'deniable'

and of course Maps!

It's sad how ignorant and unprepared drivers in the US are allowed to be. I got bulbs, triangle, and a vest too, but I doubt any of my neighbors do. Except maybe the guy that works for the Dept of Transportation with the orange truck LOL.

I have a big hammer I keep beside the seat in the middle. The Dead On Tactical Annihilator. It is several pounds of solid steel with a sharp pointed 18" handle. It is nice and dirty too (drywall dust, mud, etc) so I can claim it is just a "tool" to the piggies.

This being the good ol US of A, I keep my KABAR in the door pocket on the drivers side. Also a "tool" if anybody asks.

I would have a gun too, but Kalifornia said no to that.

And a 2-D maglight in the passenger door pocket.
