Starting on the stick welding
Feb 10 2012, 11:15 AM EST
I'm starting in on the page devoted to Shielded Metal Arc Welding (AKA "stick"). I'm probably just going to cover 7018 and 6010/6011 electrodes. If there is anything you folks wanna see there, just let me know.

Maybee a disclaimer for those with little experience with an ark welder, that if you tap it and it sticks that's normal for the inexperienced welder. Also how to remove the rod ones it's stuck to the metal. I was teaching my nephew to arc and it was funny how often and how mad he got every time he didn't tap the rod fast enough and it stuck in place. Luckily I was teaching him with some scrap metal and not his trailer hitch he wanted to weld on. But in the end I welded his hitch on for him with my MIG welder. I actually prefer to ARC instead of MIG, probably because its what I was taught when I was a kid and grew up using, damn I'm old. Do you find this valuable? |

Have you tried teaching him a scratch start? When I was starting out I found that much simpler to do. Also, people who are new at welding are hesitant to hold onto the electrode while they are welding. Try having him support the electrode halfway up with his free hand and moving it once he has the arc established. Starting him out with a 7018 electrode would help quite a bit too, it's a little more forgiving.I enjoy stick welding more, but in most day to day carbon or low-alloy applications a wire fed process is superior.
