Your top ten BOL tools.
Feb 17 2012, 10:39 PM EST
If you were going to make a list of ten tools for your BOL that you wouldn't want to be without, what would your list look like?I'm talking tools here. I don't want to hear about how you could use a shovel as a weapon or how you could also use your katana to chop wood. Tools, you know those things they sell at Home Depot and Sears. I know tools are rarely mentioned except when discussing using them as melee weapons so I thought I'd throw this out there with a slim hope at some kind of discussion about the tools you'd need. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

For me.1) A good sturdy wheelbarrow with "flat-proof" tires. 2) A 36" bow saw w/ extra saw blades. 3) A full-sized wood axe with a fiberglass handle. 4) An Estwing all steel framming hammer w/ a good assortment of nails. 5) A full length shovel with a fiberglass handle. 6) 5 gallon buckets. 7) Lodge cast iron dutch oven w/ utinsils. 8) 55 gallon plastic rain barrel. 9) Large tarp. 10) A Nupla mattocks with fiberglass handle. These are the tools I'd want on site in case I wasn't able to make it there in a vehicle. 1) A wheelbarrel because of the ability to move larger amounts of cleared brush, firewood, dirt and supplies. 2) A bow saw for sawing up downed tree limbs. Cutting down a living tree would make for hard to burn green wood that would make for lots of smoke. Hand powered so no need for fuel and none of the noise of a chainsaw. 3) A wood axe for clearing land and cutting and spliting wood. 4) A hammer and nails for making repairs and for building on to any existing structures. 5) A shovel for digging latreens and general purpose use. 6) Gotta have buckets for moving materials. 7) Boiling water is a must and ya gotta have something to cook with. 8) A way to capture and store water. 9) Lots of general purpose uses like keeping your things or yourself dry. 10) A mattock will come in handy when dealing with hard-packed dirt and root-clogged ground. hmmm only 10 tools eh1) fire piston - unlimited fire making 2) solid forged axe 3) solid forged hatchet 4) bow saw with blades 5) solid forged claw hammer 6) a study hand forged knife ( no brand hand made ) 7) solid 1 peice chistle 8) solid forged ball pein hammer 9) muli bit screwdriver (high carbon steel) 10) vice grip with wire cutter Those are the 10 tools i would take because they allow me to contruct other tools and salvage parts. They allow me to construct containers for water and food out of natural materials and increase my supplies. They will also continue to be useful as my gear is increased in size and some can double as wepons. They are all portable and can be put to mulitpul uses for exampe the bow saw a hardwood stick some string and a flat screwdriver created a simple bow drill. These tools can also be used in the construction of hunting and trapping implements therefore more food for myself. I can construct shelter also with these tools or reinforce existing buildings. "You know, I read this wrong and though we were talking about BOB's and not BOL's when I first posted."Easy mistake to make. We have lots of threads about what to pack in your BOB. I wanted to expand on that and step into Bug Out Location territory. Even if you don't have any of these things on-hand or *gasp* don't own them now it couldn't hurt to make a list of things you'd want to bring back to your base besides food and water. Weapons get all the glory around here but they aren't the answer to every survival question. 90% of your time would probably be spent on the less exciting aspects of survival. Finding water and making it safe to drink, finding a way to grow your own food, sanitation and protection from the elements. There are lots of jobs that will need doing besides shooting sh#t. Unless raiding is your primary goal in survival in which case you'd most likely die by the same sword you'd be living by. Do you find this valuable? |

"Even if you don't have any of these things on-hand or *gasp* don't own them now it couldn't hurt to make a list of things you'd want to bring back to your base besides food and water.I'm lucky that I DO have my list. That said, I'm constantly on the lookout for expanding the list. Besides, I'm a crappy 'smith, I need to get a more talented and younger metal masher! (Hopefully, eye candy! lol) Aesthetics aside, skills, "saleable" skills, will be more important than martial skills over the long term. Short term, the warriors are vital, but as things settle down; trade and manufacturing is what will bring survival to a community. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
