"Easy mistake to make.

We have lots of threads about what to pack in your BOB. I wanted to expand on that and step into Bug Out Location territory.

Even if you don't have any of these things on-hand or *gasp* don't own them now it couldn't hurt to make a list of things you'd want to bring back to your base besides food and water.

Weapons get all the glory around here but they aren't the answer to every survival question. 90% of your time would probably be spent on the less exciting aspects of survival. Finding water and making it safe to drink, finding a way to grow your own food, sanitation and protection from the elements.

There are lots of jobs that will need doing besides shooting sh#t. Unless raiding is your primary goal in survival in which case you'd most likely die by the same sword you'd be living by. "
Oh I agree 100%. Glad you actually brought it up.

1..Half Axe
2..Bow Saw w/ Blades
3. Cross cut Hand Saw 7PPI teeth
4. Estwing Claw Hammer
5. Yankee Brace and set of auger Bits
6. Good Hacksaw w/ Blades
7. Vice grips
8. Hand Crank Post Drill w/ bits
9. 4 inch Post Vise
10....Set of files and sharpening stones

Is very hard to limit it to just 10 and of course realisticaly no reason you shouldn't have many more tools. Some that I had to leave out were things like hand crank grindstone, measuring tools, egg beater and push drills, screwdrivers, various pliers, other saws, hammers, and of course mechanic tools

Good high quality tools are for the most part easy to find and can most times be picked up pretty cheap.I make a good part of my living buying and selling tools and I have no trouble finding enough to sell

I have a very complete blacksmith shop as well as a wood working one and enough extra tools probably for a couple more at least. Think I have 5 forges and over 40 anvils and even more post vices and god knows how many tongs and hamers
I have an interest in human powered machines and have a good many , not only drills but also treadle lathes and saws and of course sharpening stones.

I believe it's better to depend on hand tools and not electric ones if you are prepping for the Post Apoc. Because I use very few power tools now and I have and know how to use many non electric tools I think I will do better when there is no longer any power

Preface:

Our BOL has generators. We have plans for establishing hydroelectric. We have a record of the location of many of the solar panel installations in the surrounding 20 mi radius. Our immediate goals are to fortify, establish sustained power, and secure food stocks beyond our initial stores.

To whit, the to 10 tools are maintenance and equipment:

1) Earth Moving - A bobcat at the least, a backhoe/front end loader preferred.
2) Chainsaw, Stihl or Husqvarna with 18" bar, chisel point blades
3) Winch
4) Chain block and tackle
5) Fork truck with hydraulic tires, preferably a full on skid loader
6) Anvil
7) Bench Lathe
8) Oxy-Acetylene Torch
9) Welding Equipment
10) Mechanic tools, construction hand and power tools for various trades, the variety needed and their relative importance is too wide to make choices.

With the exception of the heavy equipment (1 and 5) and the Lathe we already have the rest in place. #10 will have to be filled out as need arises. The biggest worry is the specialty tools needed for replacing hydraulic hoses.

@Alice - Applaud the anvil and forge
@Filadog - Applaud the focus on the essentials and lowtech
@TR - Excellent rock solid approach

@Stryker - I feel the pain, skill set to varied to narrow it down to 10

Which leads to summary, having less than a big box hardware store and a construction supply yard and Im going to be good with as little as a 3" lockback.

"@Stryker - I feel the pain, skill set to varied to narrow it down to 10"
Yeah. It is almost easier for me to narrow it down to ten categories.

1. Metalworking. (welder, torch, forge, plasma)
2. Mechanical: (ratchets, drivers, spanner, ring compressor)
3. Woodworking: (chisels, hammer, prybar, planer, table saw)
4. Electrical: (multimeter, soldering iron, test probe, oscilloscope)
5. Material Handling: (hoist, lift, pallet jack)
6. Earth Moving: (bobcat, backhoe, grader)
7. Gardening: (hoe, rakes, shovel, weeder)
8. Universal Hand: (power drill, angle grinder, sawzall)
8. Universal Shop: (drill press, dust collector, band saw)
9. Lighting: (flashlights, work lights, drop lights)
10. Parts. (Lots of screws, nuts, bolts, pins, wire, fittings, etc)

"If you were going to make a list of ten tools for your BOL that you wouldn't want to be without, what would your list look like?"
Sounds hypothetical to me.

While I don't have any heavy equipment at my BOL, I do have their locations in my Scavenger Diary

ND: To an extent, the list is a wish list, tho a lot of stuff is on hand for some of us. To the second part of of your comment, while I don't have a fork truck, a forge or three and anvil I certainly DO have at this point in time. Anvils and such aren't exotic, they are readily available; tho finding a good used one is a nontrivial task. Blacksmithing(and whitesmithing!) are pretty common hobbies, check the phone book for hobby groups. And , of course, online. Heck, I found my leg vises in a garage sale!

What you already have would be best but the possibilities are endless if only 10% of the population has survived.

So hard to pare it down to 10. I guess it is actually "top 10". I love Fila's hand powered list. I worked for years as a cabinetmaker, and have a substantial collection of antique woodworking tools, too. I'd love to have a BOL with a massive solar array that would power electric tools through an inverter, but going hand powered is a sure thing.
My list: 1) Double-bit ax
2) large bow saw
3)splitting maul
4)Vaughn 28 oz rigging hatchet (has hammer head on back)
5) wheelbarrow

There's five, and those just cover firewood (a Colorado necessity)

6) Aluminum grain scoop (for shovelling snow)
7) Round tip shovel
8) Sharpening tools (files, diamond stones, waterstones)
9) Hoe for planting
10)scavenging kit (bolt cutters, hacksaw, crowbar, lock picks)

OK- I know I rolled four into one there, but with those I could come up with many more.

I'll avoid anything that runs on liquid fuels. Don't think they'll last long, and usually that stuff is noisy and will attract attention. You can hear a chainsaw for miles in the mountains.......

I like the idea of a scavenger diary- I'm going to start one tonight.

Thanks for this thread, TR!

Anvils.....many people have them, my dads step dad probably has 20 of them.

Fork lifts/trucks......I have access to 4 of them, can drive them all

ZM:
Candy store is right. Damn, prices are going up, tho! Ebay has a lot of anvils, but mostly for >$2 a lb. A bit excessive to my taste, but still not totally out of line for someone who REALLY wants one. I'd never want less than 70lbs, but for emergencies all you really need is a good stake anvil - at least until you started serious manufacturing.

Sharpie: What does he need with 20 anvils?! Is he a collector or a OCD blacksmith? lol
