Wyoming lawmaker introduces doomsday bill
Feb 28 2012, 6:51 PM EST | Post edited: Feb 28 2012, 6:51 PM EST
Fearing an economic and political collapse nationwide, Wyoming lawmakers are moving ahead with legislation to deal with a doomsday scenario -- complete with plans to create a state currency.

“Things happen quickly sometimes — look at Libya, look at Egypt, look at those situations,” the bill’s GOP sponsor State Rep. David Miller told the Star-Tribune in Casper. “We wouldn’t have time to meet as a Legislature or even in special session to do anything to respond.”

According to the Star-Tribune, House Bill 85 would create a state-run “government continuity task force,” to prepare Wyoming for potential disruptions in food and energy to a complete breakdown of the federal government.

Miller is also asking for the task force to look into creating its own state currency in the event the dollar loses value entirely.

The Wyoming House of Representatives advanced the legislation on Monday, but eliminated language calling for plans to implement its own military draft, army and acquire an aircraft carrier.

However, Wyoming lawmakers on Tuesday voted down the state's "Doomsday Bill,".

The Wyoming House of Representatives voted 30-27 against the bill during a session Tuesday; 31 votes are needed to pass the bill. It already was stripped Monday of provisions for the aircraft carrier and draft.
The bill originally was pushed as a study of the state's homeland security and its approach to emergencies. The bill included a study of how the state would handle running out of food or a collapse of the nation's economic system. Said one state senator: "It was $15,000 for a study to see how Wyoming would handle an emergency, if we were prepared for a crisis, It was an innocuous study to prepare for a crisis."

It isn't a bad idea in a (admittedly unlikely) case that the federal government does falter, however the whole "let's get an Aircraft carrier!" is a bit too much for my tastes. Do you find this valuable?

Planning for the worst is reasonable but geeze some people don't think things through. lol oh oh oh i needed that laugh they couldn't dig cannals lol because the ship would be static and couldn't move lol. i think the word they were looking for was "airbase" lol.

I don't know which part makes less sense.
Getting the aircraft carrier or not acquiring a support fleet for it.

well out of those two comic options i suppose i getting the aircraft carrier makes more sense, in this situation. lol 1 useless boat on land is better then several useless landlocked boats sitting on the dirt. Maybe they could use it as an overpriced powerplant? lol

The aircraft carrier bit was used to kill the bill, kinda like the whole letting women have the right to vote. Depending on what happens in November it might pass next year.

Well if you have an actual aircraft carrier and a support group you could knock off plenty of islands in the Mediterranean, you could even hire this famous Italian captain I know of, might have to wait a bit though he's a busy guy.

Wyoming has a department of Homeland Security. I would think that as part of their current funding, they would already be tasked (and funded) with doing this type study. The bill included $24,000 in funding (later reduced) for a preliminary study.

So why do they need a law for this, and why do they need additional funding?

I haven't actually read the plan if the plan is even out there... Or they're planning to plan for a plan who the hell knows how government works.. The jest of it came down to we've actually balanced our budget and have a surplus so why should we get screwed if the government falls. It's funny though when they pass a balanced budget amendment a state actually balances their budget. Too bad it doesn't work like that at the national level. Do you find this valuable?

Yeah god forbid the country spends the money on something worthwhile like an effective high-speed rail system?
