Tactical/Survival fixed blade for under $50?
Mar 3 2012, 2:36 AM EST | Post edited: Mar 3 2012, 2:36 AM EST
Hey guys, I have been searching around for a tactical/survival fixed blade for under $50 online lately. I am looking for one to keep in my BOB.
Does anyone have any good suggestions?
I am looking for a knife with a blade length over 4 inch.
Do you find this valuable?

It's soft steel but the Cold Steel GI Tanto isn't a bad knife. You can find Ka-Bar knives for a little more than that some times too.

It isn't sexy.
It Isn't famous
Bear Grylls doesn't use one

On the other hand, it is fairly strong, it holds an edge, it cuts metal.

and it'd < $15

I had a look that knife....cutlery grade steel? Doesn't seem like it would be great quality.

I recently bought Muela skinner , for 50 bucks. Not strictly a 'survival knife'. They had a similar knife their, but it had a straight blade. So maybe that might be good for what you want. Finnaly, don't buy online, go to store. Look and hold a few knives get someone adivice in the store.

http://www.outdoorswarehouse.com.au/products/Muela-Skinner-Knife%252d-195mm.html - My knie

http://www.outdoorswarehouse.com.au/products/Muela-Bilbao-Knife-.html Maybe more what you are looking for .

Edit: Sure, soft steel means you need to sharpen it more, but it also far easier to sharpen. If the steel is to hard, then you are noting going to be able to get a very good edge on the knife if you are only a novice sharpener

Hard to go wrong with getting an older vintage WWII knife and often they can be found on the cheap.
Always the classic MK2 ["Ka Bar"], but a smaller lighter MK1 with a 5 inch blade is a good choice for a general purpose knife

I really like the Cattaraugus "Commando" 225Q quatermaster Knife, sort of like a heavier built Ka Bar with a heavy iron pommel that can be used as a hammer

Another very common knife is the RH Pal 36 which is a large hunting type knife

All these knives are pretty common and in my experance can be picked up for less then $50 [ I've bought all of them for half that or less] and are good high quality knives made out of steel that will take and keep a sharp edge.
Don't know what more you could want in a knife like this

ODB- I have had a look at the GI Tanto, it seems like a pretty nice knife! Except I doubt any stores would stock them around here and buying a GI tanto online will cost me about $70 or so.

Zeeman- I am unsure if customs would consider that knife to be classified as a dagger (as it has 2 edges) Daggers get confiscated if you don't have the permits required to own one.

Whitefang10- None of the knife stores I have been to have had the sort of knives I have been looking for, or at least one or two did but they were out of my price range. So my main option here, is to order online. Those are some nice knives there too! The skinner knife you have there looks pretty sweet! How have you found it so far?

Filadog- I'll keep my eye out for some of those knives.
You can always count on a WW2 knife lasting the tests of time. Those things were made to last. I have one of my grandads knives he carried during WW2, it has a strange cleaver shaped blade. Pictures on my profile if you want to have a look.

Your knife is an Air force survival Machete, there were made in Australia for US fliers during WWII that might be shot downed.
Yours is the No. 2 type, the No. 1 had a longer blade and a guard .

Your sheath, which should be marked at the top Bonny & Clark was made so that it could be buckled to the pilots leg making it easy to get to in an emergency. such as having to cut your way out of a downed plane

A pretty rare WWII knife, at least in the US, especially in this nice and complete condition, Probably wasn't used much if all to stay this nice.

Kind of interesting but quite a few knives were made by Australians for the US servicemen during the war and today they are pretty collectable.

I got a great deal on Ka-Bar's 5" quarter-serrated tanto in black. I like the knife, it's very handy. Took me a bit of work to get an edge on it, but it's holding onto it pretty damned good. Look around for deals on one, they're good knives. Do you find this valuable?

For cheap but name brand, maybe something by Mora? Their FS2000 should come in well under $50. Do you find this valuable?

Filadog - Wow thanks for that information! That is so awesome!
That clears up so much for me! Thankyou!
Yeah I don't think it was used much!
Oh and by the way, my grandma also owns one of the exact kind of swords you have at the top of your profile! Can you tell me much about that?

We use them at work. They are intended to cut fiberboard ductwork. We use them to cut stainless steel chimney liner.

The Buck 119 is tough to beat for a $50 fixed blade. It isn't necessarily a tactical, but it holds a good edge, is very durable, and is time proven. Still made in the USA, and made of quality steel. Do you find this valuable?

First off, Australian customs will not let that knife into Australia. Stupid, but thats how it is.

Second, The knives I linked you can be bought at Aussie Disposals, for 43 dollars (I think, got mine from a different place). Very good knife, does the job. I would also grab some sharpening gear when you get the knife if you don't have any already.

Yeah, I've bought a few folders from within Australia online.
I have a few stones to sharpen with, not the best with them but I can put a serviceable edge on a knife.

I was thinking of getting a Coldsteel Tanto Lite, anyone have any experience with this knife?

I like it. Light, strong, cheap but well made. It's the bargin brand of there fixed tanto blades. Wish that the freaking dealer was at the gun and knife show today and I would've probably bought one, but he was a now show. Freaking lame. I was looking forward to his wares. It was that or be BS'ed hard on firearms all day.

Just because you have a pretty pistol in a nice case doesn't mean it's 600 USD. I know you need a profit but jeez.

Yeah I am thinking about picking up one of those.
As far as I know we don't have very many gun and knife shows in Aus.
Wish we did though, seems like a good place to get good gear.
