Started a journal for the revival of my childhood camp. I look forward to a lot of work building this up again. So the parent page for this thread is the journal. Hope y'all enjoy the progress this summer. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Good weather this weekend. I expect to go out and do some excavating for the cabin. I have yet to decide what I will use to ram earth with. I have thought of getting a hand tamper. http://tinyurl.com/7b9dakk My budget isn't free to buy one for a couple more weeks. I've thought about just using a large rock. That would not be very efficient. I also imagine making a tamper with a piece of 2x6 and some sort of handle, perhaps some pipe. That idea increases efficiency but I don't think it very durable.

The ideal would be a tamping machine but, that is out of the question since the scope of the project is to use only what I could make myself, is reasonably scavenged, or already in my BOB. Even the store bought hand tamper is pushing those criteria.

The tamper I made turned out better than I hoped. The dovetail joint is so strong that the tool will double as a mallet. I didn't do any excavating since I got a late start. Next trip out maybe. With the weather turning warm I want to get busy working on the spring soon.

I have one major concern: What happens if, at the end of the summer, when you've already poured hours of work and lots of money into this B.O.L, the area you built in becomes part of the park? What's your plan then?

No plan needed X-Wolf, this is not a BOL, its a place to practice primitive skills. It isn't even a rally point. One of my criteria for a good BOL is that it is already owned by myself or one of my group. Our ORP is owned like that. In certain situations the ORP is our BOL in others we move on to a more remote location.

This is serving another purpose. I am getting outside in nature more often. My mental health is improved as well as my cardio. Man! the return trip is all about cardio!

lol yeah, cardio for the win!

But you still plan on dumping money into the place, and that doesn't change depending on whether it's your B.O.L or not. Just wondering if you had a plan for recovering the investments you'll place in it.

Like most research, the recovery is in the knowledge gained. For something like a pharmaceutical the actual recovery is through the marketing of the drug. For my camp research, the recovery of investment comes when I use those skills in a survival sit or come Zpoc.

My current investment at risk is US$27. I do not plan on increasing that to any more than $100. I'm ok with that kind of loss. I used to smoke that away 18 times a year! Hey! any firearm fans need a reason to quit smoking?

May 6th entry is all about a side trip to the Iron Hill Museum. That day's trip to my camp got curtailed by a bike race. So instead of working on the camp I went to the Archaeology festival.
