"Ever heard of Switzerland they have a nice economy and have the military system I'm planning on implementing would you consider them to be a bad country they have been around for centuries."Aside from the fact that Switzerland wouldn't exist if it weren't for the Alps, they don't have a system whereby children are militarised from an early age. "For one this was a voluntary choice by the kids. Not compulsory like your secondary school. Not everyone can be a soldier, scholar, scientist, farmer, miner, ect. Between physical and mental abilities you also have to deal with person drive and passion. Let the kids choose what they want.Let the kids choose what they want when they have a decent general knowledge of what to choose from, i.e. after an education. Western society has been built on such a principle. Sparta was ultimately destroyed by Macedonia, which at the time was a highly adaptable military power, but was not a militarised society like Sparta was. Macedonia in turn was destroyed by Rome, which at the time was a highly adaptable society whereas Macedonia had lost its adaptability in both economic and military affairs. Rome was then conquered by barbarians after it lost its economic adaptability and started to rely on other barbarians for its own defence. It has nothing to do with scholars, and everything to do with adaptability. Teaching kids to adhere to a military orthadoxy too early in their lives and en masse will impede the society's ability to adapt to problems, even military ones. Do you find this valuable? |

Western society has been built on such a principle.I didn't make it compulsory i made it an OPTION not compulsory you seem to have the mindset children cant make any decisions for themselves like literally. Also the military academy is like the American ROTC, which i guess you don't even know about, it instills military values but doesn't give full scale military training. It's just like any other military school, a militarized version of secondary school it still gives them an education like what they would get in secondary school. Do you find this valuable? |

I was fairly young when I read it, and so all I was left with was that it was a f*cked up book, and several of the characters were idiots. It never really got me thinking very far beyond that. And as I mentioned, "all I was left with was that it was a f*cked up book, and several of the characters were idiots. It never really got me thinking very far beyond that." Maybe that's more of a commentary on my maturity level at that age than on the book itself, but it is what it is. LOL Do you find this valuable? |

Sounds like a great idea."its a good book to teach children and expose them to the dark side of the human heart. it doesn't seem like an adult book and certainly not for elementary kids so well young adults i guess. personally i dont agrea entirely with the author but he has some good points. "Teaching kids to adhere to a military orthadoxy too early in their lives and en masse will impede the society's ability to adapt to problems, even military ones."Excellent historical thinking IrishHitMan I am very impressed. Tactics become dated and will fail France fell because they used First World War tactics static lines. Orthodoxy causes civilizations to fail. Irish you are quite brilliant. Sparta fell due to Orthodox thinking and some really stupid choices to breed the "perfect solider.” Sparta was doomed no matter what though because of their Eugenics program. They reduced the total number of people dangerously low level and collapsed because there were not enough Spartiates also known as Homoioi left. The Theban army defeated 400 Spartiates breaking the back of Spartan military power in 371 BCE. Sparta is a horrid example of what to do. When the Macedonians came a knocking Sparta was mostly Helot slaves not Spartiates. Slaves have this strange habit of welcoming invaders who end their slavery. Switzerland is neutral; it used to be a military power. It was only saved by the Catholic Church from being utterly destroyed by the vengeful empires of the period. They were mercenaries, toys of the other powers. The Papal Swiss guard are the last remnants of Swiss militarism they are Swiss mercenaries hired by the church as a form of tradition. This tradition was stared in the 15th century by Pope Sixtus IV and continued with only a few breaks until today. The Pope continues this tradition due to the actions of the Swiss Guard on May 6, 1527; this date is known as the Stand of the Swiss Guard it occurred during The Sack of Rome by the troops of the Holy Roman Empire. The Emperor Charles V attacked Rome and 147 of the 189 Guards, including their commander, died to hold off the invading force long enough for Pope Clement to escape through the Passetto di Borgo escorted by the remaining 40 Swiss Guards. The Papacy has never forgotten that. Do you find this valuable? |

Switzerland had lost a large portion of its troops by 1515. The Swiss semblance of invincibility was lost by that date. The gallantry of these few men in the 1527 defense of the Pope saved the Swiss Confederation from absorption into the Holy Roman Empire. Prior to the climax of the Reformation the Pope pulled quite a lot of weight. The Reformation began in 1517 if your are currious with Martin Luther and his Ninety-Five Theses . It is far more complex due to the interplay of religious tensions and corruption but It would take years to write it all out. The Old Swiss Confederation finally fell to the French Revolutionary Armies and eventually became the neutral state we now know. It is the fate of all militaristic states to fail, The Spartans fell, The Romans fell, The Swiss fell, The Holy Roman Empire fell, Napoleonic France fell, and The Germans fell and the Nazi's fell to name a few examples. Militarism is a dead end. Indoctrinating people to a specific way of thinking only leads to self-inflicted misery and utter destruction of the state. Thus ends my historical rant. Again I must say Irish you are quite brilliant. Do you find this valuable? |

Sparta was the only Greek state to refuse Macedonian entry and didn't joined Macedonia's league of Greek states. But yes Sparta did a lot wrong. They took military to the extreme. A military academy isn't boot camp. It's a school with a military theme. And when the students graduate (or just leave) they don't have to join the military if they don't want to. Oh no now we have two anti-military zealots and maybe two anti-US too. lmao I agree military might alone will never keep a nation great. But not having a strong military will guarantee a national death also. Unless you can get a strong alley to protect you since you can't. That works too. Do you find this valuable? |

No Zealot here just a History researcher and promoter lol. LEARN HISTORY EVERYONE!! LOL a bit o promotion before I start lolThe only insulting part of that post is being called anti American. Americans are great people, some are jerks (take that 1st year social history professor whose name I never learned mwahhaha lol) but there are way more good than bad. Having jerks is a universal to every society ever lol. One thing I’ve never understood is the strange perception of Americans overseas, when they come here to Canada they are great people especially those that come to fish and hunt. Sparta refused because their continued military presence was a bluff, states bullplop each other all the time, but that's politics for you man. My main point was to base ideas on the factors that aided in the collapse of a society isn't the best foundation for a new society. I wouldn't recommend "bread and circuses” as a good foundation either. That idea helped in the collapse of Rome. The State was bankrupted by what the people vied as their due. Expensive games regularly and free grain provided by the State. In the last century of the Empire (the exact years escape me lol I'm sleepy) Rome had a holiday almost every other day. It was view as their right as Romans. They went broke as they were running low on easy barbarians to pillage for new funds; the Roman tax system was also a joke. The Government didn’t collect taxes but sold the rights to collect taxes for a set amount of time. 11ACRBlackhorse you are quite correct that societies need to strike a balance going too far in either direction is a bad idea. Having multiple view points and datasets allows for problems to be analyzed from different angles keeping a society dynamic. Having no defenses well is just plain silly. The best part about history is we get to see where everyone else screwed up. P.S. Thanks U.S.A for being a strong ally to my homeland. Do you find this valuable? |

Having posting issues is why my last was so short.@shadow I had my Greek crossed on some of that. But I do some history and have way to many books on it. My kids have teachers barrow my books for classes or just to read lol Your welcome and when stationed in europe I met both good and bad there too. It's in all cultures and each has issues with each other. Your welcome and your nation helped a lot with missile and air defense of North America too. And I really don't have an issue with helping other less populace or wealthy nations with defense. But I get my panties in a wad when they hate the exact thing that helped keep them safe. Germany was a case in point. You would have almost exactly half of any German group want you to leave while the other half begged you to stay. lol But that human nature and Ive learned to deal with it mostly ;) lol Do you find this valuable? |
