"You know I was just thinking...as we all know post Zed or other Apoc, those barrels are going to get hacked even shorter. Eventually what you are then holding is a blunderbus. This should pretty much scrap any pretense of patterning like Filadog said.A blunderbus I didn't even think of that but if you hack it down all the way to stock that's pretty much what it is..Getting more lead out there by using birdshot might be a double edged sword. Even if it were to hit what you're aiming at it might not have energy to do the necessary damage. But that load you're considering would work I think even #4 buck would have enough juice to punch through a skull depending on speed. I've cracked a hog skull with #4 granted it was only cracked and not a clean shot. But it did stop me from getting gored. 1 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

I would like to add that a cylinder bore barrel, is a cylinder bore barrel whether it is 10" or 24". Patterning will be about the same. The differences observed in pattern will be because of the difference in velocity. "Magnum" loads seem to spread patterns more, thats why I only run bargain game loads. I successfully hunt with all cylinder bore barrels. I do not like a choked gun. If I am hunting squirrel I do not need a pattern small as my fist. Same goes for birds. I need some spread for margin of error in case I lead too much. Also; Blunderbuss had the horn shaped barrel for easier loading from horseback. It still functions just like any other .69 or .72 and it doesnt open the pattern any. Think of it as the equivalent as soldering a soup can on the end of your shotgun. 7 out of 8 found this valuable. "@CDS Yeah it does say 3" chamber on the barrel but you're right even if it was supposedly designed to handle it still doesn't make it smart does it?Nobody accused me of being the sharpest tool in the shed. Our 410 single barrel I have shot 3" through and it's a beast. I modified it by filling all the gaps with lead shot and sealed with fiberglass(bedding). Also installed a recoil pad too. Now it doesn't beat my #ss up on normal loads and I can shoot the 3" more often too. Rossi makes good singles and you can get a 410, 20ga, 12ga, with either 22LR, and a few other choices. Can buy two barrel combos for $100 and a triple barrel pack for about $150. Do you find this valuable? |

a single shot shotgun will not reach very far dipending on the kind of range needed and the reload time wouldn't be good a double barrel will help on reloads ever though a rifle or pump would be better and you should look for slug rounds

given the same barrel length and shells why would a single shot shoot noticeably different from a pump or semi-auto?

"given the same barrel length and shells why would a single shot shoot noticeably different from a pump or semi-auto?"Well, the recoil would be somewhat different. But I don't think that's what you're referring to. 1 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

When we clay shoot I'm cleaning up what everyone else misses with my little single shot 20ga.Not sure if it's because it's a barrel choke instead of a screw in choke or what. My in-laws pump has longer range than his single or double barrels do. But that's with slugs in a rifled barrel for the pump and rifled slugs for smooth bores on the others. But other than that I never really compared the ranges before. lol Do you find this valuable? |

"a single shot shotgun will not reach very far dipending on the kind of range needed and the reload time wouldn't be good a double barrel will help on reloads ever though a rifle or pump would be better and you should look for slug rounds"The point of the single barrel is to cut on weight. I've got plenty of pumps and double's. Do you find this valuable? |

"a single shot shotgun will not reach very far dipending on the kind of range needed and the reload time wouldn't be good a double barrel will help on reloads ever though a rifle or pump would be better and you should look for slug rounds"Perhaps it is worth mentioning that a 30" full choke shotgun shooting 3" 1 7/8oz loads will reach out to 100+ yards with most larger shot sizes, and any shotgun of 12 gauge I can say will reach out to a good minute-of-man at 250 yards, perhaps 300 with a large single projectile. I use .690 roundballs. 12 gauges use most of the powder up in the first 10-11" of barrel, so apart from the sight radius; a 12" is just as accurate as a 30", the longer barrel just swings better. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. I got my h&r single 12 ga at a pawn shop new for 54.00 in 1984. I cut it down from 26 in to 18 1/4 and added a brass bead front sight. A sawed off shot gun will hold a pattern petter than most people think. The old myth of just point and shoot dosent work. The h&r will never break or jam,a shell could get stuck in the chamber but not likley. I have shot tons of defrent loads with mine. You can reload pretty quick, just go get one,if ya don't like it sell it.

"a single shot shotgun will not reach very far dipending on the kind of range needed and the reload time wouldn't be good a double barrel will help on reloads ever though a rifle or pump would be better and you should look for slug rounds"The single shot shotgun will have a higher game to shell ratio. There is little difference in range, other variables are dependent upon choke, patterning, etc. The reason the single shot will have a higher game to shell ratio is shooters of the single shots tend to take more care in making each shot, knowing another shot may not be likely. Not all barrels are conducive to shooting slugs, gotta be careful when recommending slugs to someone who could end up with a full choke. 2 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

The only choke I recommend against slugs in, is the Extra-Full turkey chokes. A slug works okay in a full choke. Best in a cylinder bore. The best practice on giving gun information is only share the facts. Not "just what my dads brother from another mother told me he heard from the guy across the street" sort of information. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"I am looking to buy my next gun at the end of this month. I want to get a single shot 12ga shotgun, but I have no previous experience with single shot brands. I also want a general idea on price, as I would not like to spend more than 100-150 dollars. I don't mind buying used. I plan to cut the barrel down to 18 or 20 inches so I can take the barrel off and store the gun compact in my BOB. Any advice on make? Model? Anything of that nature? Thanks."just remember that few firearms are as sensitive to loss of velocity and performance through barrel reduction as a shotgun. if you cut down the barrel and remove the choke the you simply have and open bore that will dramatically decreasethe effective range of the weapon since the pattern will likely open up hugely and be so dipersed that few pellets will reliably hit your target past 10 yards. also by shorting the barrel you lose critical muzzle velocity. shotgun pellets aren't really all that powerful individually. 12 guage buckshot per pellet isnt anymore powerful than a .22 lr. so dropping the velocity means that the pellets will not go as far or hit as hard as they would otherwise. since you plan on breaking the gun down for bob storage i would say get a single, or a double, with a 24 to 28 inch barrel and a full choke. the full shoke gives you the greatest effective range with all loads, carry a slug barrel with rilfe sights if you want more versatility, or have a dual barreled side by side. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Yes cuting down the barrel you will not have the range it had. I cut mine down for close ranges, like house to house. Shure it dosent have as good of a pattern as it did. Shooting slugs they drop alot now, but the ranges it's made for it works great. Buck shot works great also,I would not want someone chasing me with it. check my profile there is a pic of my 12 ga h&r

"just remember that few firearms are as sensitive to loss of velocity and performance through barrel reduction as a shotgun. You're adding pounds to my BOB with that. An 18" barrel will shoot the same as any other 18" barrel if it's an open choke, and they shoot darn good. I could always get it threaded for other screw in chokes. 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
