"Depends on your weapons training "Indeed. Also depends on the number of the undead. One-five blade 10 plus gun don't waste your ammo on a few all you will do is waste ammo and lead more to you. Do you find this valuable? |

It depends on the circumstances and the user. Each have situations where they are best and they are not.

Blades IMO should be a backup to guns. Train with both often. Training with guns should also include retention drills and incorperating it in melee combat. Most guns can be used as emergency bludgeons.

Get a bayonet for your rifle if you can.

There's a reason firearms eventually became the norm with regards to military and civilian armament; it's simply because they're more effective weapons. End of story. It took time for this transition to occur for several reasons. First, the earliest personal firearms weren't particularly reliable and only fired a single shot (or two). They were extremely expensive, and few people could afford to own them. Swords were also expensive, but not nearly as much as an early pistol. There were also a lot of traditionalists in Europe who earnestly claimed that the sword would always be the pinnacle of self-defense and war-making technology, and this philosophy held sway until firearms became immensely more effective than their bladed counterparts (around the late 1860's, after the end of the US Civil War.) Shortly thereafter, sabres stopped being standard issue to officers and cavalry -- mostly because they were completely outclassed by repeating arms. A rifle is, in effect, the finest personal defensive weapon and battle implement available to a person *when concealment is not an issue.* Nothing else will stand up to it in most circumstances, when all else is equal. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. A sword or swordlike instrument will kill you just as dead as a .50 caliber rifle will. It just takes more muscles to do it and you can't do it from a distance.Sure, if you're sitting in a sentry tower with 10K rounds of rifle ammunition (and if you want to do that it's not out of the realm of possibility) then a rifle is certainly the best weapon to have. Whereas if you're on the run and you have two rounds left for your .30-06 and 5 rounds of 9mm you'd probably be pretty happy to have a bayonet or a machete in your gear. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. "A sword or swordlike instrument will kill you just as dead as a .50 caliber rifle will. It just takes more muscles to do it and you can't do it from a distance. This is true, however training with melee weapons for live combat requires much time and effort than firearms. It's not about just swinging at a target recklessly. Even with a bayonet, if you miss the thrust you're probably a dead man. This is the same for any chopping or slashing weapon. "God made men, but COL. Colt made them equal." There is a reason this quote was uttered in the first place. Do you find this valuable? |

Training with melee weapons also doesn't use up ammunition and is good exercise.

"Training with melee weapons also doesn't use up ammunition and is good exercise."This is true, but it isn't a "free ride" either. You have to get targets, a weapon of good enough quality that suits you, a teacher (Recomended. Thought I was pretty good, then I spared against the local Sensei's daughter and she handed me my a**), books, space to work on footwork (or neighbors that don't think your a psycho), a partner, etc... I can teach a total rifle noob how to properly use a rifle or pistol in about a full day. Melee combat however, takes at least a week to get the basics started properly. Do you find this valuable? |

Absolutely. Rifles, handguns, knives, and larger melee weapons all have applications that prevent them from being obsolete.

"Training with melee weapons also doesn't use up ammunition and is good exercise."No but if you run out of bullets you can always run and you are free to take measure of the situation all the time to decide when to run. Run out of juice swinging a weapon and running will not come easy because it and running draw from the same magazine. Overall bladed items make better tools and last ditch weapons (after your rifle and a good pair of shoes) than primary weapons. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Running towards a destination is good, running away from a threat is not. You will end up tired and lost and if you're tired and lost in hostile territory you're pretty close to being dead.

"Running towards a destination is good, running away from a threat is not. You will end up tired and lost and if you're tired and lost in hostile territory you're pretty close to being dead."Well of course you should be aware of your surroundings but you should also learn to diagnose threat levels. A zombie in your basecamp needs dealing with lest your gear become contaminated. A zombie that's just one of possible hundreads in the area only needs dealing with if there is no other recourse (like running the other way). Do you find this valuable? |

"Running towards a destination is good, running away from a threat is not. You will end up tired and lost and if you're tired and lost in hostile territory you're pretty close to being dead."That's why you should always have a evacuation plan at all times. Honestly, moving toward a destination should be calculated not hurried. Running to somewhere causes more noise and if you're fatigued when you get there and have to fight, you just used up your stamina to fight or run away. You just showed up dead. Sometimes the best defense is distance in a fight. Do you find this valuable? |
