Myrtle Beach Scenario
Mar 13 2012, 3:30 PM EDT
Okay, first of all, I'm new here. Not that it matters I guess, because that has nothing to do with this thread...So anyways, I've been thinking about scenarios a lot lately, so I'm probably going to be posting a few "What should I do?" threads around here. Zombies have always fascinated my imaginative side, and considering I'm going on vacation in June, what better way to prepare that ask some online enthusiasts what I should do in case an outbreak occurred? So the location is Myrtle Beach. The Beach Cove Resort to be exact. The 8th floor to be even more specific. Here's a pic: http://www.beachcove.com/media/images/photoTour/140x6000/BeachCoveAerial.jpg I'll be with my two younger siblings (I'm 16; they're 12 and 6) and my parents. So if anyone wants to put forth the effort of researching the area and details about it, I'd appreciate some advice on what to do if I woke up on one sunny morning and there just happened to be zombies. Thanks! Do you find this valuable?

"Okay, first of all, I'm new here. Not that it matters I guess, because that has nothing to do with this thread...I've thought about this too. I was actually going to go the same spot last summer with my wife but we went to Maine. I remember thinking about this too. Down sides I can see are... -Dead center of a highly populated area. Infection spreads fast. Hotel doors are pretty thick with good locks, but there is also a master key that can open it. Being that high up keeps you away from immediate danger, but too hard to get down to scavenge for supplies. Equipment in general will wear and tear faster with the salt and sand if you're there for the long run. Pro- As I said, doors are good, you can prop a chair under it and lodge it in good. Beaches have beautiful weather. Lots of girls in bikinis. If you're there for a long time, the undead will probably rot faster with the salt water and sand too. What's your supply situation? Now let's say we didn't have any food at all, and we absolutely had to leave. The parking garage is across the street, but there are probably other options of transportation available. (I'm thinking stealing a hotel shuttle bus) How should I go about escaping the hotel safely? And where should I go after obtaining transportation? Do you find this valuable? |

Don't go where everyone else wants to go. Masses will swarm hospitals, police stations, sporting good stores, etc. It's tough to say when you're in such a crowded area. Bus is tough, but there's likely going to be road blocks and abandoned vehicles too. If you're on the 8th floor and zeds hit, I'm going to assume elevators are now dead and your only option is stairs. Get a good melee weapon and stay quiet. Do you find this valuable? |

Is there a fire escape? You could stay on the exterior of the building if there is.

"Is there a fire escape? You could stay on the exterior of the building if there is."I doubt there's a fire escape from the rooms, but I have a feeling I could use the balconies to my advantage. And judging from the hotel's location on a map, there's a docking station at a small river nearby. Would it be a good idea to try and take a boat to an area with less chaos? Hey I live in SC and MB in the Summer is PACKED with people. It is kinda stupid how many people are there. To be honest, this is one of the first places I peg for getting hit with Zeds in my state with how many people show up every year. Good news is, the police and EMS are in their prime during tourist season. Since it is one of "main attractions" it gets priority over a lot of others. They will pull police from other counties quick if something goes down. Bad news is everything Jesse said. I would recommend buying some groceries for your stay and bringing along a pistol to keep in your room. It's SC, we really don't mind guns, just what people do with them lol. Knives are good too, just don't do anything illegal while you have it on you and your fine(SC has strange weapon laws). We don't ask and you ain't got to tell, so nobody should be in your business about it. DISCLAIMER: I'M NOT A LAWYER! Hell I can't even figure out the weapon laws here on a state level, much less county. Do you find this valuable? |

There are tons of watercraft around and even more people. Add panic and flesh eatting undead and you have a lot of chaos trying to get out on to the water. Do you find this valuable? |

@treelegs- Gotta love the disclaimer. State laws can get confusing, not to mention annoying. I got my concealed carry in Virginia. When I moved to Colorado, it was a valid permit in every single state on the way over...but not in Colorado. I have to go through the process all over again. Good thing I'm a sane upstanding citizen with good morals and no criminal background, otherwise I'd be pissed.@ninja- You can't prep for every possible scenario. Take what's reasonable and keep some tools with you (lighter, some extra rope, a knife, etc). You said your 16 right? It's good you're thinking about being prepared. Better to have it and not need it... Press the idea of having some basic provisions on your parents. Do you find this valuable? |

Welcome to the wiki Ninja! I think if some sort of disaster occurs you should stay in the room, like Jesse said the hotel doors are thick. Try and wedge a chair or something behind the door, then push the bed or other furniture up behind it to reinforce it even more. This will give you some time to think about a plan of action, it's always good to be able to get away from the chaos and think of things from a logical standpoint. Since you have a balcony check outside and see what the situation is like, how many people or zombies are down there? What direction are they running in? Is there any resistance to the threat, police, military, civilian? Are they succeeding in eliminating the threat or failing? All of these play a part in whether or not you should leave the hotel room. If the threat is being eliminated it would be a good idea to stay inside for a bit longer to make sure that it's safe. If the threat hadn't been eliminated then I would suggest waiting it out until most of the zombies have migrated elsewhere and there numbers have dispersed. Make sure you find some weapons for you and your family in the hotel room. Knives, chair/ table legs, soap in a sock. There are plenty of weapons that you can find in hotel rooms if you haven't already got weapons on your person. Like TL and Jesse have been saying, try to take some basic supplies just so you are the slightest bit prepared. AND MOST OF ALL! Enjoy your holiday mate! Hope it's great! Do you find this valuable? |

You could suggest that you might need something for "civil disturbances" that might come about. Man at 16 here in SC I had 3 knives on me at all times. One was my EDC(except when I was in school), a multi-tool and a back up. Keep the blade lengths to below 5" and in SC you shouldn't be bothered. Everyone has a knife on them here lol. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CARRY A KNIFE ONTO A PLANE. If your folks are paying for checked luggage, you could pack them but only if the luggage is being checked. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm Finding a real blade in a resort might be problematic also. My recent trip to Orlando revealed quite a bit. Sharpie41 recently covered the no knife travel dilemma also. (A fun game I played was to go through Downtown Disney and find all the knick-knacks I could re-task for survival. ) Orlando is a big place, but I did not have the freedom to go out shopping anyplace where I might get a real knife. On a side note: I loved to get hold of some palm frond for my cordage research. I will leave it to TL to tell about the natural resources. Do you find this valuable? |

Oh yea, don't mess around with airport security. I got detained and questioned once when I was a teenager. Wasn't my fault though. I had just crossed the Mexican border and was at an airport in McAllen TX. I was in line behind some hockey players. They had a biiig gear bag. As some guards were walking by, one of the guys kicked the bag and goes "ssh ssh shut up" (like they were smuggling someone). I didn't know the guys and at that moment, it seemed pretty funny. I laughed. Long story short I missed my flight. Got interviewed and had my family contacted. I was released a little later and was allowed to fly home.

"I will leave it to TL to tell about the natural resources. Thanks ZM. Actually, this is a bit easier lol; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myrtle_beach http://www.aaanimalcontrol.com/Professional-Trapper/wildlife/SC-Myrtle-Beach-Wildlife.htm http://www.discovercarolina.com/html/s05nature106f01.pdf http://www.ehow.com/how_5068253_identify-insects-south-carolina.html I really only go down there when whatever lady I'm dating at the time wants to go, so I'm not the authority on it. These links seem to have most of the info you'll need to start planning your trip for survival. I will say this though. Be careful in the water. We do have sharks and stingrays, but it's a rarity that anyone gets hit by either. Finding fresh water is going to be hard when SHTF. Almost every bit of water is going to be salt in some way or shape. Even the tap water there taste a little salty. IMO, your best bet is to evac to a more rural part of the area. It will be easier to get to safety that way, but you don't have that many roads that will take you out of the city quickly. They are narrow and line of site is horrible. You can follow the hurricane evacuation route as long as the streets are clear. I recommend looking up street maps and planing a couple of escape routes from your location.
