My Shelter Any tips?
Mar 14 2012, 10:58 PM EDT
So, reading through some of these posts I am probably going to be completely ripped into as soon as I post this. However my dad and I work in a truck depot. Only small it gets three double trailered trucks in everyday. The truck depot has about 12 Employees. Half of which have families. It is corrugated iron warehouse with 2 walk through doors and three doors for trucks which can be lifted manually or power it has an office attached to the warehouse with black tinted glass which is been made shock proof reinforced in case someone tries to car ram the office. (They have had problems in the past with drive through break ins). The floor space is about 100 meters by 170 meters and the best part is who we contract with. SPC is a large canned fruit company that import and export all around the world. They also do Spam and other preserved meats. We are also a big importer of aluminium goods and plastics plus food flavourings and preserves through a company called newfoods. At any one time we are quite likely to have around 50-60 pallets of SPC goods on our premises. There are also 6 12 pallet trucks, two prime movers, four A-trailers and 2 B-trailers and of course truck drivers being truck drivers there is a hand gun in each truck. Don't ask me what type I have absolutely no experience with guns nor do I know if any of the guns have ever been shot EVER. However if Z-day was to come this to me would be my best chance of my survival.

I have bad news for you. People are going to come looking for all of those pallets of food you're sitting on, and corrugated steel siding won't stop rifle bullets. Your best bet would be to convince one of the truckers to load up all the food on their truck and drive you somewhere people aren't expecting any food to be.

If people have tried ramming the building to rob it in peacetime, imagine what they'll do when the area turns to a war zone.

That sounds good. However, I live in Australia and the only people to have rifles here are farmers and I can't think of any gun shops within a 20 kilometre radius of us. Also would someone be able to tell me how I can upload a picture of a satellite image of the actual warehouse.

Really? The 'only' people that have rifles are the farmers? I'm pretty sure I can think of one other group that will have rifles. Hint: they will need a lot of food and they also have tanks and artillery.

Haha! Once again this is Australia. The only army in the world that's worse than ours is Antarctica and New Zealand, and even New Zealand have an SAS squad that is an elite of the world. Have you seen the tomorrow series. If any country in the world tried to invade us the only possibility of us staying intact as a country would be if America or another super power was to intervene. Australia doesn't have enough funding for an army. The only thing our army is good for is disaster relief. Not trying to be condescending but if you knew Australian politics.Do you find this valuable? |

I believe you go to the photo tab at the top of the screen, and then to the right click on "add photo". It may be a writer-only thing, so if it is you could upload one to photobucket and link it here or apply for writer-hood.Use caution posting pics of your Bug-out location. Don't post exact coords, street names, ect. That goes for posting stuff like that on the internet in general. Do you find this valuable? |

You could have the worst army in the first world and they'd still have rifles and I'd be willing to bet they know which end the bullet comes out of when they pull the trigger.

Actually your idea of staying there is not that bad. Steel walls would be hard to claw through. If you have access to a oxy-acetylene torch you could weld the doors shut. The trucks themselves may be of use as well. Trailers flipped upside down become an instant wall. Or, you could load a truck and simply drive away. The only issue I think needs to be addressed is water. Also, consideration for the location of this depot is needed. Downtown, and getting to it might be difficult during a zed apoc. On a bright note, some of your co workers might also have the same idea and bring thier families there as well. More eyes and ears. Also, a more diverse skill set too. Do you find this valuable? |

We don't have that bad of an army... I know many brave souls, both family and friend in the Australian Army. Now back on topic, not sure why the army would focus on this warehouse he is in anyways, I think they would be a bit too busy fighting the threat instead of fighting him for his food. Even still, there would probably be survivors out in the area or raiders even that could try and take your food from you, that do indeed own guns. Should do fine to hold up against zombies though. Like CDSm101-800s says "The only issue I think needs to be addressed is water". You should look at the Harvesting Rainwater thread and get some ideas on how you could collect rainwater. Although I don't think this would provide enough water for your group as rain comes and goes quite rapidly depending on where you are in AUS, meaning you won't have a constant supply. Is there a fresh water source near this warehouse? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

There is a fresh water creek right behind it. However it is very likely to get infected, it's muddy and if you are collecting water while a zombie is around you are pretty exposed. The photo doesn't show coordinates it does show the warehouse and the surroundings as well as my scribbles of entrances the office and the creek. We do have a welding torch. Also about 12 bottles of gas that is used for forklift fuel. Which there are two gas/ petrol tanks and two electric forks. Its not a major traffic area but it is a major industrial area. If I can put the photo up you will see. I live a 10-20min drive away and it would take me an hour on foot if I really had to walk. So yea pretty much that's it.

In my personal opinion, I would probably plan around staying at home (That way, you'll have the greates chance of being caught in you BIL when (if) SHTF. Maybe it could involve waiting for things to die down a bit, taking a car with some ammo and guns, and heading to the warehouse. If the warehous is occupied, don't bother. If you're not starving, it's not worth it. But if you can, try and get a filled truck back home; if no truck is available, load up your car and expect to return later.

In your case it isn't bad because you and your Dad already have control of the property. Enlist employees early on in your plan. They already know of the resource and are going to want in. Better to have their help in advance than to have to fight them off. CDS has a great idea with the trailer wall. So you have Water, Shelter, and Food covered. I would only suggest that you have some water and food pre-stocked. The food sit is promising but since it is always moving you can't rely on what will be there. Stockpile fuel for the refers too. With the creek nearby you have a steady source of water. You should consider storage though. The less time you have to spend getting it is more time spent on other things. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Apart from that if you kept the noise and light down you would be pretty comfy but make sure you have plenty of toilet paper all that tinned fruit and spam is going to get things moving Do you find this valuable? |

First off. The Truck company paid for the handguns for drivers safety. Because when you are transporting pallets worth upwards of $8000 dollars it is important that the cargo as well as the drivers stay safe. Second, I have a few mates that are actually in the Australian Army and while on paper they may be 24th and 13th that doesnt mean they actually are. My mates literally laughed when I told them about the Australian Army being 24th and 13th.
