A brainstorm for a fast Z-day settlement/colony

So I was out for a walk and I walk by this depot for school busses every day but I only just now looked and I quote:

"Damn it I do not wanna listen to The Infection anymore. Ear worm go awa-holy shnikes with a way to cut openings and link them together that fleet of buses could be a solid place to sleep and settle for a time."

Of course there are issues with this but what do you all think?

This fleet is larger than the one I saw but the concept still remains.

Now that you mention it, the newer style school buses would be awesome for this with the emergency exits. If memory serves me correctly, some of the windows open large enough to crawl through, side emergency exit on main door side, roof access 2x, rear "shimmy size" emergency exit.

If parked together tight enough, you could just use the EE to act as bulkheads between multiple buses. Roof access would be great for lookouts and when over run.

Plus removing the seats would free up tons of space. More than enough for one person.

Busses need a good deal of reinfocement and insulation to be worth living in. Rather than raiding one post-apoc, you can get them cheap towards the end of their service. Talk to the local country school system's transportation plant to find out where and how they sell their post service vehicles.

Once you have one - reguarless of how, there is sufficient room to live in them. The best live in bus I've seen had the windows torn out and covered with rivited metal siding over the area, a layer of moble home insulation (which shrunk the cabin by about 2", and panalboard siding inside.

There was a cast iron stove in the center with a chimney pipe cut out, shag carpeting, a large bed in the back, and couch seat cushions to sit on (yeah, it had been THAT kind of bus to the previous owner - plenty of glow in the dark star stickers on the ceiling as well).

I've considered such a rig myself as a cheap, DIY RV.

I've known many people who lived in converted buses and coaches, mostly hippie types that travelled pretty much full time. I have done some joinery for people doing that because the stuff that is designed for boats such as gimbaled stoves,12v cookers etc. works very nicely thank you in converted buses. And the best one I saw was a 1940's streamline short tour bus and the owner was a yacht designer, It was stunning!

Toughening them wouldn't be hard but unlike the movies where a lot of crap is fastened to 'Mad-Max' the vehicles, I'd make the surface as smooth and grab proof as possible if I was going against zombies.

Old school buses are used around home for moving livestock. They're pretty handy for the job too. They get rid of the back door and replace it with one that drops to the ground making for a ramp to run the hogs up.

The guys who are raising free range hogs use the ones who's engines are shot for hog houses. They layer the floor with a deep layer of straw and rivet metal barn siding over the windows.

For quick housing I think this is a pretty good idea. I'm glad I thought of it. ;)

Whether found pre or post-apocalypse, I would have to agree with everything I have heard. If it were to be fortified, I would definitely say that all of the emergency exits should be kept intact as well. Even with insulation, I feel as if some sort of ventilation or air conditioning would be needed, as with regular school buses these are not included, although fans may be included depending on where you live. It may be wise to put whatever you are fortifying the outside with (metal, plywood, etc) on the outside so you can open the window freely. Sections should be cut off around the middle to provide a place to either stabilize rifles, allow CQB weapons (whether melee or firearms with a short effective range). A seperate generator that either runs on conventional fuels (gas, diesel), or bio-diesel. I saw the bio-diesel on that show, Doomsday Preppers, and that was actually a surprisingly good idea(I also know a few people that run their vehicles on the same stuff). Well, that's all I can think of for now. Do you find this valuable?

This makes sense. I've been thinking about something similar with shipping containers, since there are a lot of them in my town and they'd be pretty secure. Buses would be easier to position and connect to each other. Plus if you already have access to them a bus would be good as a mobile fortress of sorts in case the initial settlement was ever compromised. Think I'm going to steal this idea for myself. Do you find this valuable?

That was actually what spurred the brainstorm. A convoy of buses while limited would provide a ready shelter wherever they stop. Do you find this valuable?

I wonder how many horses/oxen it would take to pull a bus. Maybe you could park the buses in a circle and keep the livestock in the middle, like a mobile corral/colony? Do you find this valuable?

I checked into that. Apparently a full grown draft horse can pull about a ton without straining itself, provided it has a good weight distribution harness. An average full size school bus weighs about 10 tons, so 10 horses per bus. That's only the bus and driver though; no supplies or passengers. So it would probably be more like 15-20 horses. I think you'd have to consider speed, too. You don't want to be moving at a crawl if you're moving through hostile territory. Another thought is whether or not the horses would attract zombies. Would they try to eat them or ignore them and go for you? Parking the buses in a circle to corral your horses might work at night, but only if you block the area between the wheels so nothing can get under them.

The fuel for the buses would last longer than gasoline would as well. If you gathered a stockpile and treated it right, it would hold for some time. Enough to establish a more static colony with the buses being used as the primary residental buildings.

If you take out the engine once the fuel is gone, you will drop over a ton off the weight. Tearing out the seats will make up for most of the gain in furnishings.

What about using the buses for a blockade of sorts? They could be used as a wall for 3/4 square blocks for a small colony (maybe in a suburban area?). Pop the tires and collect other debris to keep something from crawling underneath. It's not a reinforced concrete wall, but it's a start, and you'd really only need enough fuel to position the buses.

Not to mention your security watch can be protected from the elements during crap weather. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic.
