Hydration Bladder

Since my home-made bladder is giving me some trouble with the seal between the fill plug and the tube, I decided to do some shopping. The Camelback bladder at EMS is US$34 which I feel is a bit expensive. So I got into my most comfortable Goog-Fu stance and found....

http://www.unclesamsretailoutlet.com/CamelBak-3L-Replacement-Reservoir-SRR1P1B-11.html

At US$5.99 this 3 Liter bladder with tube and bite valve is a real bargain. The $12 shipping cost is outrageous, but it was the same for a quantity of 4, so it evened out a bit. I ordered 2 for myself, and got 1 for each of 2 friends.

I'll check in later and let you know how they work.

Price is definitely fair enough. I just bought two 3 liters for 20 bucks each. Only difference is they have a ceramic filter. It takes a little bit for the water to soak in and to pull, but if I can put less than trustworthy water in there I figure it's worth it.

Besides, since my wife and I adopted that st bernard it's been tough to go out on dates. We've had a little bit more extra dough laying around : )

Nice find Jesse.

I'm considering one of these filters, which is supposed to be adaptable to drinking tubes.

http://www.mcnett.com/Frontier-Pro-Portable-Water-Filter-System-P207.aspx

It is effective to 3µm. and good for 50 gallons. At US$16 that comes to $0.09 per liter. That is a bit expensive compared to other "straw" type filters, but is an easier purchase to make.

Edit: found how to do " µ "

Nice. 5 bucks for the bladder and 16 for the filter. Just about what I paid. I also got hammered with shipping :$ Do you find this valuable?

Hey! The Skilcraft hydration bladder was all I hoped it would be. I was scared that the low cost would mean the plastic was thin like a ziplock bag. It turns out that it is not much different than any other high quality bladder.

Here is the vid http://youtu.be/Vuuhe3sqe98

I did a little more Google-Fu and found a wide range of prices from the US$6 I paid to as much as US$25!

Here is the link for the hydration pouches I bought, a little spendy at $35 ea. for 3 liter and $28 for 2 liter but IMO what makes them worth it to me is the ease of cleaning with the ability to remove the whole top slide clip and open the entire bag. anywhere here it is

Made by Source for Eberlestock custom-made, bladders use patented anti-bacterial technology, and Glass-like liner special standard features include dual fill options (wide-mouth end opening for stream filling and drying -- plus screw cap) and a high quality weave covered insulated drink tube.

A side note, Pure Hydration sells an in-line filter you can install on your drinking tube which is great for putting less than awesome water in your hydration bladder

Make sure if you order from these guys you do so under the Outdoor tab not the Military tab

A good source that I've found for this type of stuff is Airsoft-club.com and similar direct from china web sites for Paintball and Air soft gear.

My BOB has an area FOR a water bladder, but it's under the rest of the gear, between the backpack and my back. This was a recipe for a burst bag, so I wanted a Molle bladder bag I could attach to the outside of the BOB. These will run near 50 bucks at Army Surplus types shops, but I got 3 from Airsoftclub.com for about that, including shipping.

I find that Air soft gear and 'Direct from China' type web sites (Sad as it may be) offer items of very nearly the same quality as my local Army Surplus at a small fraction of the price!

The only complaint I have on the Molle pouch is that the webbing doesn’t line up exactly right. Not unusable, but a little harder to get it attached the first time. That’s probably why it was sold as Air soft gear and not given a ‘Blackhawk’ or ‘5.11’ tag and sold for 20x’s as much as I paid.

So during a nice hike this past weekend with my wife through some of the great mountains Colorado has to offer, I noticed a wet sensation trickling down my rump.

Turns out the camel backs I bought are leaking from where the hose connects through the bladder to the filter. I'm wondering if I should just return them, or just add an adhesive around the base.

Getting 3 miles into a mountain to realize your bladder has been slowly dripping into your backpack reeeally sucks...especially on the hike back.

Cut an inch off the hose and reconnect, go for another year or so before you have to repeat. The hose stretches on the hose barb over time, you just need to get to an un-stretched part. I've had to do this once a year with my CamelBak. At the beginning of the season I "pressure test" it before relying on it now. Fill bladder, put it on the counter, and lean on it.

Edit:
Vinyl tubing takes adhesives very poorly. Neoprene is not much better. Which is why there are mechanical fittings for them (e.g. hose barbs). I chose not to use a hose clamp for fear of it cutting the bladder. If you want to try adhesives like silicone caulk, or JB Weld, you should prep the surface with abrasion. Using a PVC cement (use primer first) may be better, but that will be permanent.
