Always thought I had perfect BOL

Well my boyfriends grandmother lives right across the street from the hospital, (thats the only problem) they have a huge barn 3x the size of her house stocked to the brim with tools, building supplies, household items anything you can think of. has windows but are secured down and can be welded shut because it is a metal building...now I always thought it would be a great place to eventually stay, but worried about being right next to hospital... We live in a small town. Do you find this valuable?

Define small town?

Some people don't have access to land farther out in the country (that's a given though), but I normally suggest that their BOL be outside of any population centers.

A good consideration would be if you have an immediate water supply that can be readily accessed.
If nothing else it might be a good idea to come back to once the commotion has died down and everyone is thinned out (If that happens).

A small town helps, especially with a hospital close. Most likely if it is a small hospital as well it will evac patients elsewhere. On the other hand if it is the only hospital around for miles, FEMA,CDC, or some other alphabet agency will set up an emergency station there or even commandeer the site which your BOL is located. If you think this is likely, I would make some backup contingency plans.

Just because a building is metal doesn't mean it can be welded on. If the gauge of metal is too thin you'll simply blow a hole through leaving the area more compromised than it was before. A better alternative might be to weld together some angle iron covers for vulnerable openings. After those are fabricated put some square holes in them. Then all you have to do is drill your boltholes through the building and install with your hardware. A cordless drill and impact would serve the purpose of installation quickly as well as an extra pair of hands.

just so you realize, the things that people are definitely going to target in an apocalypse is the resources they need.a hospital is an easy mark for sure, an farm is also a very abvious place to look for things you need. farms have a lot of varied needs for proper maintenance. barns are lures as well. a metal building would be seen by many of a mechine shpo or similar place and be targeted for looting/scavenging as well. small towns will fill up fast with desperate refugees from the crumbling population centers as society comes apart. expect a lot of frantic, often violent, people to show up unexpectedly with their own survival driving them to act stupidly.

as for a place to hole up. it doenst sound to well insulated so it will be cold in the winter, does it have electricity, water/bathrooms, does it leak, is it infested with rodents, and so on. you are probably just as well to stay at home for as long as you can. it offers creature comforts that will not be available to you, that will make all the difference in the world as you adjust to the change in your life.
