Most people would go for canned food that is why you need to go for fresh food like fruits and vegetables and seeds what you also need is a lot of flour and beans nobody ever goes for flour and beans which is good because you will be able to get lot of flour and beans which will last longer than canned food if you put it in an air tight contaner.

The over looked staples after the panic would be:Dry beans Flour Sugar Oat meal Corn meal Dry pasta and so on. This is however only after the initial panic, after a few days people will be desperate and take any and everything that they can get their hands on. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Dried foods will last so long as they were not infected with weevils or other pests. To ensure against possible infection bake your dried foods at 170° F for an hour. This might be problematic for a scavenger. Look for mason jars with metal lids (spaghetti sauce type jars work well). Other non-combustible containers you can seal will work just as well. Fill with dried goods, then place in a hole covered with a couple inches of earth. Then build your camp fire over it. By morning you will have baked them free of infection.Do you find this valuable? |

My wife and I use a food saver with an adapter for mason jars. We can seal a jar of beans with seasoning minus the water.

This way of cooking will be invaluable in a fair few SHTF scenarios because it'll cover the smell from animals and the living and otherwise impared whilst cooking preventing detection.
