Better The World Today!
Apr 7 2012, 4:26 PM EDT | Post edited: Apr 7 2012, 4:27 PM EDT
I thought i'd make a thread where we could talk about what we did recently to improve our world, help others, and volunteer ourselves in a pre Z-Day world. If this thread takes off we can genuinely say that we are making a difference in life as it exists today and not just in the possible event of an zombie apocalypse or WROL.

I'll start out, I worked 6 1/2 hours today on a ladder placing and nailing off trusses on two Habitat for Humanity.

FYI As the day wore on the men all got tired X3. But I thought i'd cut them a break because most of them were 50+. Why so little young or female blood on H4H?

Honestly, probably nothing. I could sit here and try to rationalize out how some of the things I do, benefit others; but that's not why I do them. I applaud your thought of others though VK, glad there are people like you out there, it makes me feel a little less like this place needs sanitized. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Lol swinging hammer is a good way to clear your thoughts and I plan on working more with habitat for humanity in the future. It's just that right now I kinda got alot of schoolwork and a few exams to work on.

Also I find it hard to believe you haven't picked up trash or fed a stray or something recently Loki.

I bang a hammer for a living, I've done work with H4H in the past... but that was a long time ago, when I cared about people....hahaha.

I do little things, but more out of guilt, than a need to help. That's why I say I have my own reasons for doing the things I do, I believe that bettering an area is done out of a need to help, not to serve yourself. If not, then yeah, I guess I do good work...lol

I have been working to get off of the power grid with solar panels and wind turbines, and should be completely electricity self sufficient by July. For the environment and my checking account in the long run.

I donate usually $100 a month to the Red Cross, I DON'T give blood because I can't (Lyme disease).

I donate money and time at the area humane shelter (animal shelter).

I donate money and time at my churches food pantry and deliver meals 2 days a week to the elderly and disabled.

I do handy man jobs for an area abused women's and family shelter.

That's all I can afford and have time to do with going to college and running my antiques sales and antique tractor and steam engine refurbishing business.

I have a monthly donation to a few animal rescues...and whenever I shop at petco or petsmart I give a donation.

Recently my wife just saved a 1/2 blind st. bernard off the side of a highway. Long story short we found out she escaped from an animal hoarder. Now she's our baby and living the sweet life.

We tend to care more about animals than we do people :$

Well, I'm always working at the church (I'm the unpaid maintainance guy there - Sunday mornings I grab a toolbox and a Bible). Thus, I do good for the insular church community and by proxy the larger community they serve (food ministry, etc).

My government job is in the public sector, so I do help people there from time to time.

I'm a consolitory member in my rather antagonistic HOA (that we have HOAs way out here is a stupidity far beyond comprehension - but the bitter old crones have to cackle at each other like hens, so someone has to the voice of peace and personal responsibility). I bleed for the vampires every time the leechs bring their buses to work.

All in all, almost everything me and my wife do is for the sake of the communiy at large. That must be why we are both personally so selfish and closed off to the world - we hate visitors, social outings, and the like and perfer staying home to anything else.

My job forces me to help people during the week. But on the weekends people can suck it. 4  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

I do my best to help those I see suffer around me as well as I can, including total strangers. I'm a man of many talents so I'll take odd jobs from people for very little(like a soda or a pack of cigs) if anything. Do you find this valuable?

Well, I just donated a freezer full of moose burger to a family of 5 who are below the poverty line. (the father walked out, single income, 4 kids).

Whilst I don't like giving up food stocks, I admit they need it more than I do.

I'm a trustee at my church. I keep things looking nice and provide muscle for the old heads and like Oakspar this spares money for outreach.

I also mow...a lot. My feet hurt. Dang hills ._.

Good on you Random, Those kids needed good food and you provided it well done. Moose is delicious for those of you that have not had the pleasure of eating it.

Tree your a great guy man.

Jesse, i have a soft spot for dogs too they are great beasties aren't they.

I give blood regularly since I am O- and I am on the bone marrow registry and it has now been extracted 4 times. It's rather funny to see me give blood or marrow since I wimper like a baby whenever I do it needles scare the living crudd out of me. I do odd jobs just for the hell of it. Hauling heavy objects is my specialty lo . I keep an open door to people, letting them crash here or raid my supplies when needed. I hate grocery shopping so I tend to do it all at once. I drive back home every saturday and go shopping with my mom she just had one of her knees replaced oi and the next one is being swapped out in june or july. I act as a taxi service for a few old people arround me to get arround. LOL all those things make me sound full of myself.

I rabble-rouse, trouble-make and ask awkward questions where and when ever the opportunity arises.

I'm not trying to make a difference to life as it exists, I'm trying to save it! Because I think it is under a greater, more subtle and dangerous threat than any time in our history. I believe if issues are not addressed and problems solved - that some people are putting a lot of effort into distracting us from. Then a zombie apocalypse would be a walk in the park compared to the s**t storm we are walking into.

So we are all agreed that the acts of JunkCollector have exhibited exceptional holiness, his deeds have enveloped the title of sainthood, and from this day forth he shall be known as Saint JunkCollector. Do you find this valuable?

OMG Frank I should have thought of adding that fact that I ask thought provoking questions to stir up minds in college and elsewhere lol.

Rabble-rousing of a sort.

All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men don't ask awkward questions. . .

No, just a man trying to atone for being a drunken ass hole who treated everyone like crap from the ages of 16 to 40, when I finally sobered up and started going to AA. Just trying to make up for neglecting my sons, using women for playthings, and paying for the abuse I put on this body.

I'm no saint just a sinner trying to not get laughed at when I reach the holy golden gates.

I honestly don't do much in the physical sense to improve the world around me. But, I try my hardest to make people around me happy. It seems like we've got so many problems now, so any chance to get to make people laugh, I take.

IMO the best example was me volunteering at the state fair not too long ago. My job was to direct people where to park. Which I did...by dancing...for four straight hours. By the end of the day, I was tired and sweaty, but I'd made around a thousand different people all smile, laugh, and enjoy the fair before they even got in. So I'd say it was a good day.
