Unique to your BOB
Apr 15 2012, 1:42 PM EDT
What items do you have that you don't think anybody else has in their BOB?I was browsing the threads and stumbled upon a very useful addition, a small metal pencil sharpener. you can sharpen sticks to a point for traps/weapons but you can also create tinder from fire starting with the small shavings. My unique items are are wrist brace, an ankle brace, and a iron bamboo walking staff. The wrist brace and ankle brace are pretty self-explanatory. The walking staff allows me to walk farther, stabilizes me when climbing or descending hills, and works perfectly with my Cold Steel Warhead, to give me a quality spear. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Good thread idea, though I don't think there's anything in my BOB that most others don't already have.

I actually just thought of one more addition to mine. Smelling salts. did a quick search didn't see much here about 'em. But they're a good way to get you to 100% if you awake groggy.

A camouflage veil and a flask of Jack Daniels. I keep the veil in there for two reasons, though I can think of tons of uses for it. It's primary purpose is to keep mosquitoes and gnats from biting and harassing, but it can also be used to help camouflage my head and face. Never know, one might have to get camouflaged and get nasty. The flask is self-explanatory. I'm not an alcoholic, but if I'm bugging out, I know I'm not the only person who'd want a comfort drink. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

A small case to hold and clean my artificial eye. I lost and eye and if I do not clean it I can get infections that really suck. Bet no one else here has that. Also a small jade Buddah sculpture I got when I was a child I have had it a long time and keep it in my BOB with some family pics. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. A little wooden frog missing an arm. He's my lucky frog! I'd never survive an apocalypse without him.

Interesting you mention the pencil sharpener. I use a wall mounted one to make shavings for tinder. My unique item would be those shavings. I use fatwood. The resin causes the shavings to clump up so they have to be fluffed before sending a spark into them. Nice quick fire without much need to blow on it. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

A pair of 18" bolt cutters. I haven't seen bolt cutters listed on BOBs, but in addition to being a master key for padlocks they can cut cable, small limbs, chain and other items and do so almost silently (well, compared to hacking away with a machete).I also have a small Fire Kit, containing one of those magnesium fire starters for camping, an old film canister full of dryer lint, and a few pieces of 'lighter pine'. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. I keep Shemagh in my BOB for much the same reason LJ126 does, much larger and more versatile than a bandanna, although I do have those too.I also have fatwood pine shavings in my BOB fire kit and EDC fire kit Ammonia inhalants in my RRFAK The only thing I can see off the top is the Epipen I keep in there for my wife and the snake bite kit 1 out of 1 found this valuable. I'd like to get a Shemagh for my kit, I think it'd probably be more versatile than the head net veil I've got in my kit. Here's a link to it.http://www.hunterspec.com/content/camo-flex-form-ii-net-head-nets It's also pictured on my BOB page as well, just folded. Looks kinda goofy but it works pretty well. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Hmm . . . most of these things are pretty common (The fire kit, the Jack Daniels, etc.). I don't think I've got anything in my B.O.B that's terribly unique. Maybe the small ziploc baggie filled with Swedish Fish and Skittles?Nice thread, BTW, Anomoly. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I keep a change of clothing in a large vacuum seal bag (the type you sit on or roll up to force the air out) I also have a couple black, aluminum stand up pouches. Fill that black metal bag with salt water or urine, and place it in the large zip lock garment bag, you have a solar still for making potable water. Clean water gathers at the base, and surgical tubing in the air valve makes a drinking straw. One thing I considered, but haven't done yet is get a rain cover for my 'Tactical' bag. Normally found in the camping/hiking section of any store, these red or blue covers would make your 'black tactical molle' bag look much more 'friendly' and attract much less attention. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. "I'd like to get a Shemagh for my kit, I think it'd probably be more versatile than the head net veil I've got in my kit. Here's a link to it.LJ16, make sure when you buy a Shemagh, you buy the heavyweight ones, they are 44"x44"or bigger, the lighter weight ones will work but they are not as durable and they are usually a little smaller 42"x42", what I'm saying is if your looking online and the description says 42"x42" then they are probably fashion industry Shemagh, all Mil-Spec Shemagh are heavyweight and measure 44"x44" Important note here, if you buy a traditional "Arab" shemagh the have different patterns and these patterns while cool are also clan related, so you could inadvertently piss off some Arab person by wearing something you didn't mean to, just saying, not that it would matter post collapse but at least for me I wear mine almost everyday when the weather is cool and I only wear the Mil-Spec ones, the markings have no meanings Sorry everyone else for wandering off OP Do you find this valuable? |

A key to my front door, sounds average yes, but its as powerful as a picture of family, something you have the possibility of returning to someday, no matter how slim the chance.

"Are the Blackhawk ones good quality?"Yes I own four from Blackhawk, 2 Dry Earth(tan) and Blak, 1 OD and Black and one Off White and Black, they are some of the best quality I own, one thing you should know with any Shemagh is when you launder it, do it on delicate or by hand, if you do use a machine use one of those dry cleaning mesh bags or wash them by themselves, they'll take a beating in the field but for some reason a washing machine will kick the tar out of them Do you find this valuable? |

I don't think it's uncommon but when I was looking at tents for shelter I couldn't really find any 1 person tents that fit my taste. So in my BOB I now have a Snugpak jungle hammock so I can sleep anywhere with trees lol. A little paro-cord and a tarp over it and I have a decent water shelter too. I don't have any in there now, but aluminum foil will be in my bag shortly. You can use it as shelter lining to help keep warm, you can use it in cooking chores, and you can signal with it. Just seems like a little bit of foil could be pretty useful. Do you find this valuable? |

Thanks for the advice SlowRide. I will definitely follow it.I've been considering getting one because my environment is not unlike that in the Middle East. In fact, the Lower Rio Grande Valley (where I live) is just North of the 26th parallel North, which also cuts through the Sahara, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, and many other countries that wear some variation of Shemagh or Keffiyah. This region is technically considered a "subtropic quasi-desert" but because it's located in the Rio Grande floodplain, it's unusually green here in non-summer months. All I know is that it gets HOT, often breaking 110F in the shade in the summer. In the sunlight at midday, it wouldn't surprise me if it broke 130F. Alright, sorry for going off topic guys. We don't talk shemaghs much! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
