How to "Wave" a pocket knife. Easy and cheap DIY knife project.

This mod works well on any knife with a thumb hole. A wave is a device used to catch the your pocket as you draw the knife to open it extremely fast.

1. First adjust your pocket clip to hold the knife with the tip facing up. This is already an ergonomic way of carrying a pocket knife.

2. Pick a zip tie that will fit the curved section of your thumb hole. . http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/photo/13569434/Spyderco+Wave+Project+part+1

3. place the zip tie with the catch section facing outwards away from your body. If you're left handed place it on the left side of the blade and vice verse. http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/photo/13569435/Spyderco+Wave+Project+part+2

4. Tighten the zip tie as tight as you can. Pliers work really well here. http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/photo/13569436/Spyderco+Wave+Project+part+3.

5. Cut the excess line from the zip tie. http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/photo/13569437/Spyderco+Wave+project+part+4

It should look like this. http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/photo/13569438/Spyderco+Wave+left+to+right+handed+comparison.

Viola; you now have a waved knife that can deploy as fast as most switchblades. Waved knives are also legal to carry virtually every where as of today and you shouldn't run into any legal problems.

Make sure to place the knife higher up in your pocket if you're wearing cargo pants, and if you're wearing blue jeans place it farther forward in the pocket if possible. It's possible to open it with it lower or farther back in the pocket but it's really easy to wear your pocket down faster.

To utilize a wave properly twist the knife slightly counter clockwise as you draw it from your pocket. If you're left handed like me twist it slightly clock wise.

Cool project, but most of my carry knives either have a wave already, or a "trigger" to open.

Good idea

Just for you guys I got my old right handed Endura Clip-It out to demonstrate a right and left handed version of this.

After you've adjusted the knife to be tip up you can start from part 1 of these pictures.

Part 1. http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/photo/13569434/Spyderco+Wave+Project+part+1

Part 2. http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/photo/13569435/Spyderco+Wave+Project+part+2 Don't mind my dad's hand there.

http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/photo/13569436/Spyderco+Wave+Project+part+3. This is where pliers really come in handy. You may have to twist the pliers a little to get it to tighten significantly.

Part 4. http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/photo/13569437/Spyderco+Wave+project+part+4 You can cut the excess material with another knife or with pliers.

The finished product should look like this.

You carrying an automatic or did you rig a wave on them?

Neither, autos are illegal here.

Check out the Remington F.A.S.T. Blade, you'll see.

My current EDC is a Leatherman, I don't see a model on it but it kinda has a wave on the back to act as a trigger.

I think this is the part where I start to lose the plot. I can't picture how this works, or how it would cause the knife to open any faster.

Positioning.

Take a folding knife, put it in your pocket pommel up. Start to draw, twist counter clockwise slightly imagining having a wave on the blade.

If you carry the knife tip up the wave will catch your pocket and open the blade as you draw it. Drawing it with a larger or bulkier wave can work with a normal draw, but it won't open reliably.

Sorry, I don't even know what that means.

Anybody know where I could find a video of this?

Look up Remington F.A.S.T., the flare on the blade is the "wave" it just hooks on a pocket to open it

I did a thread much like this not too long ago.

Okay, I think I get the idea now. Rather than quickly opening the blade, though, to be honest I'd be much more afraid of that flare hooking in my pocket and getting entangled altogether just when I needed the knife in a hurry.

It doesn't protrude enough to get hung up in the pocket

"It doesn't protrude enough to get hung up in the pocket"
So if it doesn't protrude enough to hang up, how does it protrude enough to be able to open the blade?

I'm sorry if I'm being dense here, but I guess I just can't get my head around this one.

The zip tie portion that grabs your pocket is normally round. It also doesn't really have much to hang on to the pocket, it just kind of contacts it. When you twist the knife as you deploy it the catch part of the zip tie rubs against the lining in your pocket and unless your tension screw is really tight it unfolds it partially. If you do the motion quickly the force of your hand moving causes the blade to fling open easier too.

I'd have to see it I guess.

EDITED TO ADD: Check out the video of the Cold Steel Spartan knife on this page

About 1:14 into the video when he takes the knife out of his pocket, is this the kind of thing you guys are talking about?

Enough to grab the pocket and open the blade, not enough to get stuck in the pocket.

Look at cold steels stiletto video (ti-lite?) and you'll see
