I only have some laminated maps sadly but I fold it to the current part of the map I need and put it inside of a OLD leather military map case that I got my from grandfather. Its not much but it isn't bad for what I have now Do you find this valuable?

What I do is once the summer starts coming to an end, my step dad a B-keeper leaves honey and wax everywhere. So I get a big baking pan put in a layer of wax with a bit of honey which makes it more bendable melt it, lay the map in the wax let sit for a minute take out of the wax. Let it cool, scrape off the was and repeat. Do you find this valuable?

Just a thought, don't know how it will work, but a college buddy and fellow prepper came up with the idea of going to a tee-shirt printing place and getting maps printed on actual cloth...instead of just gluing paper/laminate ones to it.

Back in the day all maps were cloth, so if it can be done with a decent level of quality you will get a durable and waterproof map

On a similar thought to bluesy04 there are several companies who offer photo to canvas printing. Unless there's some strict copyright issues I'm sure they'd print maps just as happily as photos of your kid/dog/whatever. Do you find this valuable?

obtain digital maps for the area(s) you feel that you need to complete your emergency prepping. have them printed off, laminated on cardstock, and bound at your local UPS store, Office Depot, et cetera. include notes, scale changes, and so on as well.

be sure to keep in mind that you need acuarate legends and proper scale conversions.
use various types of maps for the same area as well. use road maps to designate major roads and land marks. use topo maps for specifics on the ground to be covered, water courses, so on. river maps can be useful for traveling water courses. survey maps for property, right of way, electrical, gas, and so can be helpful when you need to understand where something vital is.

"well bees wax will preserve the document its a very old preservation technique and the paper actually becomes slightly greasy to the touch rather than brittle, its more akin to a crude wax paper in texture than a candle it is best rolled though. Paraffin wax...... i've never heard of its use personally in paper preservation but in all honesty it didn't exist back then so I don't know what the result would be. What type of paper did they copy it onto because normal copy paper can be acidic. Bees wax has a natural antimicrobial agent in it.

Isn't paraffin an alkane of the methyl group??? lol it's too late in the night for chemistry lol"
actually paraffin wax does the same as beeswax, but makes it really flammable as it's literally soaked in fuel. beeswax is less flammable, documents soaked in that will not be nearly as flammable as ones in paraffin wax. but beeswax is difficult to find locally in many areas, they'e generally sold in specialty stores.
ordinary candles- ranging from birthday candles to big candles- are found in just about any store, from gas stations to hardware stores.

if you need to protect a map from water, consider other options before using paraffin wax. paraffin makes stuff really flammable. if it catches on fire it'll destroy the document before you can react.

This is technically correct. Paraffin's flash point is about 90° C while beeswax is 204° C. Practically, however, they have equal flamability with regards to destruction of maps. With those temperatures simple storage is not a concern.

The two waxes have other properties that might be of greater consideration. One would be brittleness. At room temperature beeswax is rather pliable, where paraffin is hard. Should either be taken to 0° C they are both quite hard and subject to fracture. Soaked into a map waxes could cause the paper to break. I'll be back with an edit, going to test this out.

Edit: Forogt where any of my beeswax is, so I didn't do any comparison. Paraffin soaked paper is not that susceptible to breakage at room temperature. After 200 folds on the same line, it even held up to snapping. Held at 0° C the paraffin soaked paper was about as flexible as that at room temperature. I used 20lb paper with no appreciable cotton content. Un-soaked paper, btw held up to the same number of folds.

This thread is more about durable options. The iPad isn't durable, water resistant, or truly reliable, and it requires a power source to use. You could use it, but it would not be something I would want to rely upon as a survival means of navigation.
