How many Aussies out there are ready?
Apr 29 2012, 1:47 AM EDT | Post edited: Apr 29 2012, 1:47 AM EDT
The trend that I keep seeing amongst Australians is that we're wayyy too lazy. We are too concerned with Sport and socialising, that most fail to be prepared for survival situations. I've been a long time fan of having a plan and being prepared as best I can for the worst. I hope to meet and talk to others like me, but it seems there aren't too many locals on here. Just a quick hands up, WHO'S AUSSIE OUT THERE? Do you find this valuable?

Another Aussie here mate

I have been interested in the survival and disaster planning for a very long time

I have to say there are probably more people around you that are the same they just don't ever mention it simply because well you know what main stream people are like they think your some kind of nutter if you mention survival and any thing associated with it but its ok to talk about what your footy team is up to for as long as you want lol

I was having a look at your profile and i saw your selection of firearms and i was wondering were they your choice because they are what you like and no problem with that or due to your states laws i am not very familiar with the laws in NSW

Hey renet, are you like some kind of cheese? lol

Good to see another Aussie... Thanks for your question. I'm currently in the process of publishing the answer to that in my new B.O.B draft.
To put it simply, I'm looking for three things in a gun when I'm selecting one.
1. Weight / availability of ammunition
2. It's effectiveness against Zeds
3. How badass it looks on my hip

I know a lot of people are going to argue with me on this, but I think .22LR at mid range, is more than sufficient to penetrate a walking cadavers skull. Even a human at that kind of range will be greatly deterred from such a small calibre. Anything bigger, in my opinion, is overkill

Another aussie here.

Don't want to start a fight, but, it better to have more a larger caliber. Zombies aint the only thing you will run into, and you might also want to use your firearms for hunting medium to large game. .22, a 12 gauge and an 06.

Sorry to hijack...but I gotta say, I really like the aussies. I was backpacking in Amsterdam a few years ago and hooked up with a group of Australian bodybuilders. Cool dudes. They took me a to a huge whiskey party. I also met a VERY "friendly" Australian girl...I'm married now so I won't go into it.... ; )

I did feel like a moron though when I made a joke about fosters beer and they had no idea what I was talking about. I've always wanted to visit Australia. Maybe one of these days when I save up some more cash.

That's awesome Jesse!

Haha, I have actually heard about Fosters beer! Although I have never seen a bottle in Australia.

Yeah it'd be good to have you down under! I warn you though, this place is expensive. Since we are a massive island that is pretty much isolated from the world, we don't get as many tourists as we would like.

Fosters is a Victorian brand. You'll see it on tap in any Melbourne pub. I doubt it bears much resemblance to the export stuff.

I remember that Australian girl told me she was from Melbourne. Except she pronounced it 'Melbin'. I was like "oooh, mel-bORne". Her response was 'oh you yanks and your accents'.

Aaaaah memories....

Hey white fang, nice to meet ya. That's alright, it'll take more than that to start a fight with me. I've thought a lot about it, and for now, that's my choice of calibre. Considering that I don't even have a gun licence or any guns, I will possibly change my mind. The biggest advantage of course, is significantly quieter shots. So that can be a huge advantage.

The .22 VS other calibre has been know to cause...debate here.

I agree by the way, .22 is the gun to start of with, cheap ammo, light ammo, no recoil. Just a good all round beginners rifle. Very sensible, the people that start out with 30-06 tend never to be as good shots as the recoil can mask faults in shooting. So a very sensible choice indeed. Other rifles can wait, but once you've got one, I predict you''ll be buying many more.

I'll put my two sense on what gun you should get. I like CZ rifles, they are very good. Almost everyone I know (that is into guns) owns or has owned one in the past. My current .22 is a savage Mk II G. Very good rifle, especially for the price. (350). Heaps cheaper than other .22s available. Can't go past a bolt action. Regardless of what you choose, good luck.

usedguns.com- thats a good site to get a used rifle.

@Jesse
Haha, yeah that's how most of us pronounce Melbourne.

@Slowride
So does that mean you have acquired the taste for it?
I gave Vegemite to a few Canadians that came to stay here, their immediate response was gagging, of course followed by "How the hell do you eat this stuff?"
It is definitely an acquired taste! I love the stuff!

Try mixing it with hot water for a rough soup or through instant noodles adds a bit of flavor but it gets a touch salty when added with instant noodles

or

if you make a rough bread in the fire from flour and water dissolve some of it with the water and mix it through its not to bad better then plain bread with nothing on it

Just some information you might find handy or give you some thing to think on

Now given that i am not 100% certain how different the laws are in NSW to TAS but i thought i would share this with you some of it you may already know if so sorry mate

1. When it comes time to acquire your safe for your firearms find out if cat A and B firearms can be stored in a cat H safe if they can then spend the money and buy a cat H rated safe that can hold rifles as well it will save you money and make your life easier

2. Once you get your firearms license you should be able to buy a cat A or B straight away with no problems but i am not sure on cat H i had to wait 6 months in that time get to the range and try out as many handguns and rifles as you can to see what you actually like before you lay any money down on anything what works for some people may not work for you

3. If you still go with a .22 handgun which you my have to as i am not sure of your clubs rules and state laws really look at getting a good revolver in .22 rather then a semi auto as i have seen so many people with stoppages at the range with semi auto .22'it has put me off them for life and on the flip side if you get a revolver in .22 you can feed it any old rubbish and it will still go bang without any problems. I buy what ever is cheap at the time for my revolver and its never failed but the same ammo causes problems for others in their auto's

4. Take notice of any advise on brands that people give you at the range but still do your own research
