A realistic solution to a "Zombie Gun".
May 16 2012, 7:59 PM EDT
Realistically the best gun you could have would be light, reliable, accurate, cheap, decent range, and have abundant ammunition and be over all kick ass(sorry for language). What Rifle would fit all of these requirements? Why The "Henry Repeating Arms AR-7 Survival Rifle" of course.Link here http://www.henryrepeating.com/rifle-survival-ar7.cfm (Please post responses and thoughts). 1 out of 2 found this valuable. 10/22 is better than the AR-7, more accurate, more reliable, more accessories etc

I'd also like to point out that design has a fairly limited mag size compared to other .22's.It's also a ***** to put back together after you field strip it. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

Although, if I'm looking for a backpack gun....I'd still pick a 10/22

The beauty of the Henry AR-7 is that it is not a walking around gun, but an "also carry" long gun. Walking around post apoc, you want a gun that will solve problems quickly, in a panic, on instinct alone without hesitation - a solid 12g pump will do that for you. Many will say that the walking around gun should be an AR15/AK47 since they have more reach than a shotgun. Since the shotty carrier will want some range, having one of these in the bag is a great solution. When you have to shoot on the run, you have shotty. When you have time to aim a long shot, you have time to pull this out and put it to use. If you plan to have a .22LR as your primary walking around weapon, you want the 10/22 for the larger mags - since clump shooting will be the norm and you don't want to switch mags on the run (in anything). 3 out of 3 found this valuable. I'd rather have a SBR 10/22 with a folding stock. It would however be a good pack gun and back-up for something with a bit more punch like Oakspar has said. There really isn't a realistic solution for a good "zombie gun". At least not one that would ever be resolved on an internet forum. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

How about the one pound .22 rifle/fishing pole? Mountain View Machine & Welding's Pack-Rifle. (http://www.packrifle.com/)Specifications Caliber .22 LR Capacity Single Shot Action Bolt Action Finish Aluminum / Carbon Fiber Barrel Button rifled with Carbon Fiber Outer Stock Carbon Fiber Overall Length 33" Takedown Length 17" Weight 0.97 lbs. Sights Adjustable Peep MSRP (Price) $425 A unique feature of the Pack-Rifle is that is can be converted to a fishing pole! A telescopic pole can be installed on the stock and a reel screwed into the pistol grip. It would possibly be good for hunting/fishing post ZPOC, and maybe for backup, but not for rapid fire. Looks like one could have a rifle, fishing pole, and a 500 rounds of ammo, all at 5 pounds. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I'd rather have a Ruger 10/22 take down or a Marlin Papoose if I wanted a take down gun. AR7s are finicky as heck, and don't take many aftermarket accessories. Not to mention you can't really mount optics and still take the rifle down without having a mount that can repeat zero, which might be hard to find for that gun. The Ruger 10/22 TD model would take up a little more space, but it would digest more ammo and would take much larger magazines, along with being capable of accepting a mount that will repeat zero after it's reinstalled. Let's also not forget that the Ruger can take high quality High cap mags. The Marlin Papoose is a pretty neat gun too; you can't fit the gun in the stock, but there's a ton of storage space in the stock. I seen a guy carry a few spare mags and 200+ rounds of ammo. That's not to insult the AR7 either. My brother has one and likes it a lot. I just think it's better used as limited use emergency gun for when you absolutely don't have room for anything bigger. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

I personally have two Marlin 795 .22 rifles that I like.(along with other weapons) I bought the first one because it was $100 during Christmas 2010.(Marlin was running a $25 rebate/coupon) I bought another last Christmas for $75 (new) using the same rebate program. I fell in love with them, and found the Marlin 795 to ALMOST be as reliable as a 10/22.I found a company that sells 25 round magazines for the Marlin 795, so that makes shooting much more fun. It is fairly light weight, semi auto, and small enough for kids, but big enough for adults. ( I bought the first one as a Christmas gift for my 12 yo son, and liked it so much that I bought another one for me.) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Another lightweight interesting pack rilfe is the Titanium Goat PRK. It is a kit that turns a Cricket .22 rifle into a 15 oz ,22 rifle. It looks a little un-orthodox in the configuration, but with a little practice, it may be a decent pack rifle. Since it is based on a cricket, it could be reliable, and light. Here is a link: http://www.titaniumgoat.com/PRK.html. Do you find this valuable? |

"We've been back and forth over this a million times, really. Hell, I oscilate from zombie weapon to zombie weapon almost weekly. Last week it was a Scout rifle (thanks LJ!) and this week it's a lever action .357 again. My suggestion to the OP is to look at a Keltec Sub-2000. It's smaller than the AR7, and only a little heavier. It does pack more punch, though. But of course, you can't carry as much ammo... See, there ain't no such thing as perfect. End of the day, no such thing as the perfect zombie weapon. There might be a perfect zombie weapon *for me*, but I sure as hell haven't worked out what it is! :) 2 out of 2 found this valuable. The AR7 is a very good rifle for what it was designed for...a light weight "survival" rifle that can be stored in it's water proof stock till you need it.Was not designed to be a general purpose .22 or one that would see lots of shooting There are actually a lot of accessories for them out there such as colapsable stocks, different barrels , higher capacity mags, scope mounts etc. all of dubiuos worth and aimed at the Arm Chair Commando crowd I am sure I have an older AR7, mine unlike many you hear about has been pretty reliable but to be truthful I haven't shot 1,000s of round out of it.Do have to shoot High Velocity ammo Because of the stock, poor trigger and crude sights not a tack driver but then not what this gun is about Unless you have a real need for a specialised 22 that you can break down and keep in a small package a ruger .22 is a way better choice as a general purpose .22 rifle.. More dependable, better made, more accurate and eassier to shoot well.I am also sure it would hold up lots longer too, lots of storys out there of 10/22 shooting hundreds of 1,000s of rounds with no parts breakage. or problems sure never hear about AR7 like that All you need is an old Ruger 10/22 some extra stock mags and a good scope or peep sight and a sling.Invest in some spare parts , cleaning kit and stock up on ammo....If you have money jumping out of your pocket invest in a better trigger After market stocks, barrels, flash hiders etc etc. are things that people want but don't need 2 out of 2 found this valuable.
