Tell me what YOU want to see on the Urban Escape Vehicle!
May 22 2012, 2:10 AM EDT
Alright guys. I need to hear your input on what you have always envisioned when you hear "Zombie Apocalypse Vehicle". Accessories, colors, lights, roof rack... whatever. My Urban Escape Vehicle is in the garage while I work on the Stage Two suspension and engine design, so I've got time to tinker with other things as well. Already working on full CB/HAM/Scanner comm suite, among other things. I will take all your suggestions into consideration when designing the next phase of the UEV. This time... it's war. Do you find this valuable?

Roof mounted remotely fired gatling gun PS. Bazinga, I know that's not practical or even legal, but I would love to see it on the UEV Do you find this valuable? |

I'd definitely like to see a roof rack, with a corner of it dedicated to securing two 5-gallon+ water cans. If it were me, I'd go with those hard plastic military surplus cans as opposed to the big cylindrical water tanks, but I guess those could work as well. There's some downsides to having a roof rack setup (and certainly some I'm missing); it's not exactly low-profile (you'll start to be known as "That guy with the Survival Scion") and whereas your other modifications might not be visible from a distance, a Scion with a roof rack will undoubtedly be worthy of notation. Aerodynamics will definitely be affected, and a doubly whammy on gas mileage because of the added weight. Do you find this valuable? |

I'd like some big offroad tires, lift, roll cage, upgrades suspension....stick shift, not automatic, needs 4wd, skid plates, maybe a bull bar or some iron bumpers, winch, offroad lights, extra large gas tank, roof rack, a Journey mix...........you know, if you're looking for another project vehicle, you could come to Colorado and work on my Bronco. I won't even charge you a dime :D 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

3 5 gallon metal "Jerry cans" with a holder on the rack on the side of the gas tank. Shovel and axe strapped to the side rails. 1000 feet of rope wrapped along the post of the rack. 2 5 gallon water cans in a holder. Don't Tread on Me bumper sticker Yours is the one in the photo gallery isn't it? Because that's what I am thinking about. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Here are the three things that would be useful for a survival vehicle in my view1) An atmospheric water condenser/generator you may not be able to access clean water and it is often in the air these devices simply extract it for you. 2) An eight foot coil of copper tubing wrapped around your exhaust system sealed and filled with a NON TOXIC COOLANT liquid. The copper tubing should end in a sealed container with a pressure valve. This is a simplified heat exchanger using waste heat from your engine to purify water by boiling. I’ve overly simplified this idea as it is in the prototype stage only. 3) This one is dependent on the type of engine you have Modify the engine with a combination water pump/ alternator. The longer and the more numerous the belts the more fuel is expended by using these combo devices you will increase your range and fuel efficiency. Even cars with single master belts can be modified in this way as the fewer devices running off it the less drain there is on the system. Do you find this valuable? |

Cow tipper...nuff said. The mini gun would be nice but costly to fire and maintain not to mention illegal to own and operate as a civi. All these other ideas are also excellent additions, although 1000 ft of rope may be excessive Do you find this valuable? |

I'm toying with that "Jetta TDI" idea I mentioned in another UEV thread. I was thinking that a tow hitch, and a hitch basket would serve me better than a roof rack. For carrying military style fuel cans. Something like this:http://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Cargo-Carrier/Pro-Series/63153.html I was also considering KC lights in the grill, not sure of the legalities, but I don't intend to be on the road with it much if I ever get it done. I found a lexan window kit for it, I saw other makes/models available. For the Jetta they run around $1200 for a complete set. A bit pricey, but I think if I'm going to do it, might as well DO it. A winch may be useful. Not sure what fits a Scion, but the wheelbase of a Jetta is the same as an early 90's Ford Explorer, so all the aftermarket goodies made for that, can be fitted. I'm sure your mod list, and "wish list" is much longer than mine, but there's a few ideas, if they aren't already on there. Do you find this valuable? |

add in the required oil and tranny coolers for your vehicle and upgrade your radiator if your going to haul. To increase your engine life you should increase the size of your oil system, look at modifying it into a double filter system as it will increase system capacity. This modification will increase engine life and keep fuel effiency higher, it will also decrease the cost of ownership in case the **** never hits the fan in our lifetimes lol.

I don't know if they are fixing them soon, but here's the link. http://www.percyshp.com/store/speedglass/window-kits/cat_1225.html From what I could find, they are just a vender, not the manufacturer. Unfortunately most of the manufacturers require you to go through a vendor, rather than directly from them, I woul dthink that with a bit of searching you could find it though. Most of them look to be between $900 and $1700. Do you find this valuable? |

How about a cable winch on the front bumper? When faced with the jammed roads a winch would be a wonderful thing to have to clear dead vehicles from the path.Do you find this valuable? |

A roll cage wouldn't go amiss, but that's a fair bit of weight to add to a vehicle. I toyed with the idea of putting a mesh grille over the windows, as well as the front and back winscreens, but unless you want to be known as the "Doomsday guy" I wouldn't recomment it. Yet.Spare fuel tanks would be useful, but for tha amount that you carry against the weight gain, I'm not so sure it'd be a useful add-on. I would look at reinforcing the front bumber with steel tubing so that it won't dent on impact and can be used as to push obstacles without risk to the bodywork. Some hot-rod flames down the sides wouldn't go amiss either... Do you find this valuable? |

If it were me, I'd go with those hard plastic military surplus cans as opposed to the big cylindrical water tanks, but I guess those could work as well.I've already got the roof rack. It's a cheapo Chinese clone of a Yakima rack, which is fine except for that it bows in the middle if loaded with stuff and then rattles against the roof off-road. I like the way it looks, so I'm just going to weld in some reinforcement across the bottom. On top, I've got a 5 gal jerry can of gas and space for another 5 gal plastic jerry can for water which I keep in my garage. Also a tool box with all the essentials for tire changing and roadside emergencies (lug wrench, tie downs, warning triangle, rags, etc). And a spare tire. There's space around the spare to pack in gear if need be. CONS: On the freeway above 65mph my gas mileage drops from about 35mpg to 30. I also lose some cornering ability with so much weight up top. And yes, everybody at school and in my neighborhood knows my "Zombie Scion". PROS: This car is tiny. It was meant to carry one person around, with space for three friends if you have to. I desperately need the extra space the roof rack provides, which is enough to offset all the cons. Do you find this valuable? |

Not a massive tire, but this tiny car makes them look like super swampers LOL. They're going on custom 7" wide rims with the round hole center and deep offset. Going 2.5" higher in front. Maybe 3, depending on what the CV joints think of the new angles. No cage, too heavy. Definitely a roll bar though. If I can't find a cheap one ready to bolt in from the street-racing crowd, I'll just weld one. Getting new bushings for suspension to firm it up a bit, and removing my front sway bar. FWD cars don't need one, they put it in to engineer understeer which is easier to handle by inexperienced drivers. I know how to drive. I'd love all-wheel drive, but that will be many years away. Maybe a Toyota FJ donor chassis.... heheh For now, I'm keeping the auto tranny, but I'll be getting a manual once I finish the high-performance motor and supercharger. Definitely skid plates. It needs sections of tube steel subframe in parts to firm up the uni-body as well. (especially the lower radiator core support... as flimsy as old tinfoil.) Definitely tube bumpers and KC lights on the front, either tube bumper or old-school diamond plate mini-truck bumper on the rear. LOL. I should open a business: Custom cars for the apocalypse! "3 5 gallon metal "Jerry cans" with a holder on the rack on the side of the gas tank.Got the shovel. Maybe an axe... might be unnecessary weight. I've already got a hatchet in my BOB. I like rope. Not sure where, but there will be rope. YES on the sticker. Also one of those "Zombie Response Vehicle" stickers. LOL http://image.wetpaint.com/image/1/lN6PZhklzZxBWk8aFf7T0w1023339 This is the UEV, shortly before the fateful "oops" that cost me a perfectly good engine. Since I'm pulling the engine and the car is going to be down for a while, I decided, Why not! Do you find this valuable? |

"Here are the three things that would be useful for a survival vehicle in my viewI'd be concerned about weight... but then again, a 5gal can of water weighs 40 lbs, so if I had a machine that weighed even slightly less but provided constant fresh water I could replace the jerry cans for an overall net gain. Interesting. I wonder if the exhaust gets hot enough to boil water. Maybe directly after the collector / header. I already removed the AC pump and all related crap, which got rid of one of the belts. Now it's just the water pump and alternator on one belt, and the P/S pump on another. Do you find this valuable? |

As for all the other suggestions... Winch: Yes, but not a permanent one. Several companies make winches designed to slide into a receiver-hitch hole, so by welding on two receivers I can move the winch from the front to the rear as needed. Lexan / Window Mesh: Not sure of the legalities here. I do intend to drive this thing pre-apoc, so I can't violate TOO much of the vehicle code LOL. I'm pretty sure lexan is a no-no for street, and I don't think the local cops would appreciate steel mesh over the windows. What I have considered are two options: Either pre-install mounting studs and keep the window mesh frames in my garage until SHTF, where I can just slip em on, tighten some bolts, and go. Or option two, some less-obtrusive bars over the windows... not really enough to "protect" the window, but it might help and if the window does get broken then thieves or zombies cannot get inside the vehicle. And yes... I do want a remotely controlled, roof mounted machine gun. I think I might have to settle for this. It shoots photons! http://www.basspro.com/Optronics-RC550M-Remote-Control-Marine-Spotlight/product/52299/139382 Do you find this valuable? |
