"I don't have a lot of experience with gout personally. My brother has suffered from it quite a few times as well as some friends. To my understanding, it's a build up of uric acid in the system (been wrong before, I apologize if this is inaccurate.) It has been suggested that my love of beer may be the reason I am not prone to this condition. (There's is already a high uric acid amount in my system, that gout if brought on by a sudden change in levels, rather than the amount of uric acid in a person's system.)

That said, some things that have worked to remedy the condition within a couple days:

- Apple cider vinegar, about 4-5 tablespoons in a cup of water, like 2 times a day. Tastes like hell obviously, but I have seen it end a flare with my own eyes in just a couple days.

- Black cherries. I understand availability may be an issue, but if you have access, eat a good bit of them, about a cup, works better in conjunction with the apple cider thing. Without the cider, it seems that they take a long time, with it, you should see positive results the same day.

*If the apple cider vinegar gives you heartburn, or acid reflux (many prone to gout, are also prone to these) put a couple teaspoons of baking soda in the vinegar water, mix it up, let it settle, and down it like a horrible shot... because it will be horrible, but shouldn't trouble you. Hope this helps."
Thanks Loki!

Cut and pasted.

Right now I've got 100mg of Allopurinol a day to keep my levels in check. It's good to know I wouldn't have to go all vegan post-Z.

"Not doing the MATH.

(1) Stockpiling based on emotion, rather than data, to create weirdly unbalanced stockpiles.

500lbs of rice and 5000 rounds of .22LR. Seems balanced - but a family of four will eat 500lbs of rice in 6 months if it is the primary staple, while 5000 rounds is five rounds a day for three years (far more than you are likely to need to shoot post-apoc).

(2) Stockpiling some of the more difficult things to stockpile and missing the easiest.

Dental floss, hand soap, towels, etc. How much would it really cost to go and get a 30 year supply of dental floss? How much storage would it take? Answer: $114.87 and two Target bags (with the floss still in the original packaging). Hand soap? $197.45 and a copy paper box. Towels? $450 and two Rubbermade totes (the kind they sell cheap at Halloween or Christmas for decoration storage).

(3) Basing their plan on what they will do instead of what they have already done - thinking that a plan is a goal, rather than a set of steps to be improved upon. My goals are sustainability so deep my grandchildren could die of old age in it. My plan starts having holes towards the end of year 3."
Good observations as always, Oakspar

I should stock up on tooth paste, brushes and dental floss. I've never had a cavity. I hear they're painful. I never want to find out. Do you find this valuable?

A quick jerk with a pair of pliers should fix any dental problems.

I couldn't stand living in Medieval times. Just the thought of having my teeth pulled out without anesthesia gives me the willies, in fact, just the thought of having my teeth pulled out in general gives me the willies. Do you find this valuable?

I had my 2 wisdom teeth pulled out with novocaine. Really not bad. Two quick pops and aspirin and I was fine. Enough alcohol and it probably isn't that bad. But the cosmetic horror of having a gaping smile is enough to make me make sure that doesn't happen. I admit, I'm a little shallow. I can't help it.

With oral hygiene, there were methods before toothpaste. I'm in no way suggesting that I don't use toothpaste, or am against it...hahaha... I'm just sayin'. In the spirit of multi-tasking, baking soda makes a replacement for toothpaste. It also will scrub pots, aid with heartburn, and a host of other things.

"My examples were to shoe how much water we have.
We have early 1900s hand dug and sand stone wells about 30ft deep plus some drilled wells 1940-50 that reach about 50ft with hand pumps.
Plus two 1990s 75ft with electric pumps.
Plus about six natural springs that what Im told have never dried up.
A swamp is behind our house with a creek through it. Government made and protected wetlands and water shed.
Multiple ponds on the land with a state lake 4-5 miles away.
So potable water is readily available. Plus more than I can use that I do have the meams to purify.

But my point was unless your in a waterless area and or climbing into a bunker and not coming out for a extended period. Some locals don't need lots of water."
I live in a freakin desert. I'm so jealous. Our deep wells go dry on the BOL if we don't damn up the stream in the winter and let the water soak back into the ground.

Just another reason I've never planned to stay here for long. My BOL isn't really self-sustaiable, just a good place to hole up and ride out the worst of the panic and FEMA refugee camps and such for a few months.

first tooth brush used boar brissels, also a way to clean your teeth is a while ago they would get a rag and some coal/charcoal soot. Plus they had tooth brushes that used a type of plant of sorts. chew sticks, tree twigs, bird feathers, animal bones and porcupine quills have been used since ancient times. To make the chew stick the chew stick would be made from trees with anti microbial properties. a couple examples of these are:
Salvadora persica
Sassafras
Dakhaar
Gum tree
Tea Tree
Neem
Gouania lupuloides
Cinnamon
Dogwood
olive, walnut, and other trees with bitter roots

I will use tooth brushes and paste and floss as long as I have it stocked up. I'll use alternatives when they all dry up. But I might cry a little.

The taste of baking soda in toothpaste makes me gag. I can't imagine straight baking soda going over well with me. I really hate it.

"I'd say a big mistake, kind of related to what Maricely said, is that people don't test their supplies.
How's that Sausage and Grits MRE actually taste? Will your $200 milspec flashlight eat batteries and fail to remain waterproof? Saved some cash with cheap stuff and it fails as soon as you use it?

If you can't or don't use your gear now, how do you expect to do it during a stressful situation like a disaster?

"Actually that's not true, humans and a couple other animals have to consume Vitamin C in their diet, most animals actually produce their own VC in their body so meaning you can get vitamin C from hunting. The only problem is the way you have to get Vitamin C is by eating organs i believe, so since animal organs are not very popular in western cuisine from what i know the best way to get Vitamin C is from things like limes and oranges. But still if you need some Vitamin C and you cant find any orange groves then go hunt a Deer and eat its organs.(:"
Pine needle tea.

They contain 7x more Vit-C than an equal weight of oranges.

Don't taste good though

you can find good amounts of all the essential vitamins that your body needs in just about everything you can possibly eat. As long as your diet covers more than one food group you will be fine. Our misguided modern dependency on bedpan bullets has made people nutritionally stupid. If your body is ever short on something it will react by causing you to "crave" the food that it can be found in and as long as you are not completely inept you will understand that craving and seek out what you need.

All this talk of getting your vitamin C out of the forest has me scratching my head. The lowly potato has a good amount of vitamin C and a tomato 'aint no slouch either. We'll survive without oranges ya know and resorting to making tea outa pine needles would have to be last resort scenario for me. Do you find this valuable?

I've got another one.

Either underestimating or overestimating the "survivability" of your current location.

When SHTF...

...there will be people who leave a perfectly sound house with insulation and several hundred gallons of fresh water in the water heater, toilet tanks, and pipes... to go freeze their asses off in the woods and drink creek water.

...And there will be people fully convinced that their bathtub water bag and some extra canned food guarantees total safety... and then realize that their high-rise apartment building is on fire.

Yeah, I had potatoes, and tomatoes and that up there too... haha.

A lot of people would criticize what I carry for sustenance, but I view it as such:

The only real concern I have as to short term survival is protein. Nearly everything else that I may lack can be gathered on the fly in my area. I have a very real, and relatively vast knowledge of short term survival. I don't say that to pat myself on the back, I mean to say that I can reasonably assume to keep myself in carbs, vitamins, minerals, ect. from what is around me in the area I live. Most protein is animal form (I don't grow peanuts, soybeans, or any of that good stuff). That requires hunting (possibly noisy) or trapping (possibly time consuming). If I am living out of my BOB neither options appeal to me. Plants are quiet, and I don't need to chase them. If I require them to sustain myself, I can do so quickly, quietly, and without increasing the possibility of drawing attention to myself. To be really honest, aside from water, protein is one of the more difficult challenges. Water is plentiful here, the water table is nearly on the surface in many areas, natural springs are nearly everywhere, not to mention the creeks and such. With a bit of reading, and befriending the right people you can learn the edibles in the area without having to guess, or hope.

I have a good bit of weight in my pack, so I do my best to continually find things that serve more than one purpose. Toothpaste is in my bag... but when it no longer is, there are other things out there. When the toothbrush gives out, that doesn't mean I will be rocking the "Bubba teeth" anytime soon either. Soap, toothpaste, even deoderant can all be found in the woods. I'm not saying that it is an equal replacement, because it's not.... but when what's gone is gone, it's handy to know the next best thing.
