Walking Dead much? lolIf anyone is curious, this is the prison closest to me :D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Correctional_Institution,_Englewood We've got the Enron CEO and Rod Blagojevich. Back on topic, it might not be a bad idea if it were already empty and prisoners haven't taken over. And if all the cells are full and occupants aren't infected, are you going to let them out? "That's the million dollar question isn't it?only time i would do that is if the majority of prisoners didn't deserve to be there like say if they were political prisoners you know poets, artists, people who spoke out. those types of prisoners. But i may be willing to let out a thief maybe because really a thief doesn't deserve to suffer such a horrible fate as to be eaten alive or starve to death., That thief may be able to give me or use(while in my group) valuable skills especially if they are a professional they would probably know how to breach doors, shoot a gun decently enough, and etc. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. I see 4 scenarios with their own individual challenges.A) Guards still there with prisoners in cells B) Guards gone, and prisoners out of cells. C) Guards gone, prisoners in cell and alive D) Guards gone, prisoners in cell and dead Did I miss any? 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"I see 4 scenarios with their own individual challenges.E) A mixture of survivors and undead F) Prison infested with undead. Since there is a finite supply of food, which some of it prone to spoiling quickly especially when emergency power goes out, where is your food going to come from? All Prisons, old and new, are surely going to have guests and that may place you in bloody competition. To me, the Return on Investment is not worth the risk. Do you find this valuable? |

"You have been watching Resident Evil & Walkinng Dead too much. The easiest possible scenario you can have is some forgotten Level 5 prison (used to imprison the most dangerous of criminals) and all of the inhabitants are now zombies. Once you have cleared each exterior and interior section which includes disinfecting or washing away zombie goo and blood, you can start adding survival feature such as a garden (if you have seeds). Perhaps you can catch some wild prey animals or live stock to raise within the fence line (not guaranteed)? Once you clear out the common areas, the jail cells and prisoner common areas will be easier. All of this is going to take time. Maybe if you are extremely lucky, like 1% or less chance, you will find an abandoned prison but I wouldn't hold my breath and turning the prison into a survival compound is still going to take time. Again, I just see no Return on Investment (ROI) unless you purchase it before day zero. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/28/nyregion/closed-new-york-prisons-prove-hard-to-sell.html Do you find this valuable? |

I like the Alcatraz idea, surounded by water, very strong walls, & no prisoners to worry about. Do you find this valuable? |

weren't some prisons made so that they could grow food and pump water and otherwise be relatively self sufficient those prisons would be useful.

I like the Alcatraz idea, surounded by water, very strong walls, & no prisoners to worry about."Problem with Alcatraz is that it will require a lot of work to get survival operation, too many other people with the same idea, and if the zombie infliction went George Romero crazy, you would be surrounded by the Land of the Dead. Ca State Parks and Recreation does not have the deep pockets to keep Alcatraz totally preserved. And of course, we know Gitmo is highly populated at this time... :-) Do you find this valuable? |

Alcatraz is also only a maintained ruin, it was abandoned due to the expense of rebuilding the decaying prision to the standards required to keep prisoners. It walls and structures are riddled with holes. All parks and recs does is makes sure the buildings don't collapse they don't maintain it's fortress status. The defences are crumbling and soft due to salt water. There is no fresh water on the island it was piped in from the mainland hence the water tower.Prisons are designed to work with modern infrastructure, they would be as dead as the cities without the huge water pumps, sewage pumps and electricity. The only way I could see a prison being a viable option is if you were part of a massive survivor group migrating to better pastures. You would already be carrying most equipment needed to sustain life, but in need of protection and food. You find a nice climate, with some fertile valleys surrounded by natural defenses, and hope there happens to be a nice big prison with watch towers and such (remember, many prisons are just buildings with cells inside, only the high security ones have the walls, fences, and towers). Then you can make the prison your "headquarters", like a castle in medieval times, where the farmers can retreat to in time of attack. The farmers and ranchers surrounding your prison-fortress would supply you with food in exchange for protection. (given that these were members of your original survivor group). All of us who disagree with the prison idea are not saying you shouldn't try because there is always a chance for survival in many places, it just adds unnecessary stress and risk to living in the apocalypse.During peace time, you need to purchase something like this which sounds kind of self sufficient already and can be made even more so with more modifications. In addition, it looks likes like a fence line or wall needs to be added. Plenty of lumber around for make shift building, building repairs, and even walls. Or, you can start off with a piece of land and build on it over time like Southernprepper1 on Youtube. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/28/nyregion/closed-new-york-prisons-prove-hard-to-sell.html Do you find this valuable? |

For the most part, yes, a prison is actually a pretty good place. Not only does it have state-of-the-art defenses, most prisons have a library, so there should be several books on general apocalypse survival. However, what good is barbed wire against some hundred, maybe a thousand zombies? They can't register pain, and most of their organs are dead (except for the brain), so your best bet would be to find one of those really old prisons with 15-foot high cinder block walls. So yeah, some prisons are good, others are death traps. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

If the fence line is sound, it will stop 1,000 zombies no matter what archetype. If they are sprinters, which are in most cases biological and not undead, are subject to normal terminal wounds as any other living person. This means if they attempt to climb over, either concertina wire will get them and/or the defenders will. Level 5 prison fences are usually designed to stop vehicles to help mitigate friends, gangs, and family busting the prisoner out of prison. Here is one of the top level 5 prisons in the US... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/35/Aerial_shot_of_Pelican_Bay_State_Prison%2C_taken_27-July-2009.jpg 1 out of 2 found this valuable. The first zombies will be arrested and taken to prisons. One more thing, modern prisons have electrical locks, so they will open when electricity goes out.
