What Type of bag would be best?
Jun 13 2012, 9:02 AM EDT | Post edited: Jun 13 2012, 9:02 AM EDT
I'm 15 turning 16 and was just wondering what type of bag would be best for me? It has to be one I already have,
I have a DOE camping bag which carries a lot but is bulky and hard to run with
A school bag which is smaller but still strong which is easy to run and jump with
A hold-all which is huge but has no back-straps.

Which would you recommend? I can't go out and buy a proper bug out bag due to parents possibly thinking I was a nutcase.
What do you guys think would be best?

First of all, your parents shouldn't think you're a nutcase. If you present the idea posed by the CDC that disaster preparation is a must, then they may actually buy off on it, and get involved with you in storing food, water, and supplies, and then you'd probably have some resources for a better BOB.

Out of the three you listed, I'd recommend not carrying the hold all bag unless it's in your vehicle, loaded with everything you could possibly want. If it doesn't have should straps, make some, or be prepared to abandon it, as carrying a bunch of crap by hand will probably get you killed.

Second, I'm leaning towards the DOE bag, but only if you practice using it. Load it up with weight and go for a job, climb some small fences, up and down hills, etc. Practice with it. The more you practice, the more weight you can add, until it's not such a burden.

Bottom line, mobility is (arguably) one of the most important things to consider, and a huge bag that you can barely move with is probably just going to get you killed...

Problem being with the whole nutcase thing is that we don't live in America, and where I do live there has never been a natural disaster.. ever.. Do you find this valuable?

I use a camping backpack. Honestly a good backpack loaded with camping goods in basically what you want in your bugout bag plus a weapon or two. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I prefer backpacking day packs. They're tough, lightweight, generally full of options and range of adjustment, and don't scream "tacticool." Good packs can be expensive though.

I use a Camelbak, Cely uses a Mountainsmith bag. Hers is the superior bag, and cost quite a bit less since it was bought on sale at Academy.

How can we tell you what bag to use if you don't tell us what you want to carry in it?

a "just the essentials to get back to my car" bag is going to be a lot different from a "I have to abandon all of my safe places and take everything I can with me" bag.

If someone just wants a simple BOB with minimalist stuff then your talking about a plain backpack, if there is more gear and its more involved like an INCH bag then something larger with frame and support preferred like a large camping pack.

If gear comes in to complicate the situation like long guns with slings, pistol belts, battle belts, plate carriers, etc then there also has to be an accounting for that where a lot of hip pads, sternum straps, etc may severely interfere. Hopefully you don't have to do any fighting when lugging around gear, or running, or climbing, but it may.

LJ has it pretty spot on.
Most different types of camping bags will meet your needs and will tend to be more comfortable to wear. Right now I just use my issued bag, but I'm going to be picking up a small to mid-sized Kelty internal frame bag for my birthday. Sure, it isn't tactical and I can't strap pouches upon pouches to it (mo' molle mo' problems), but above everything I can wear it for more than ten minutes without wanting to kill myself.

Bonus, you can use it for it's intended purpose, hiking or camping. There, perfect excuse to have the bag, perfect excuse to practice using it, AND an excuse to go camping! Maybe I'm the only one, but I actually LIKE camping.

I'm also in the market for a new bag since one of my shoulder straps is starting to go in a place that can't be repaired.

I've pretty well decided on one of these.

My local surplus store sells them for 80$

I tried one on and it was super comfy and seemed to be soid. One thing that sucks is it is a little smaller than my last bag so I'm going to have to condense a bit.
