My=Plan

First of all I'm 14 and I live in a suburb of Chicago( not good I know) but I have a plan to leave with my family up to a camp in northern Wisconsin 6 hours by car away. I would take back roads and stay off the highways at all costs. I know that it's a bit risky but the reward would be worth it. The time I would leave would be if there were lots of zombies in Chicago or the first one in any of the close suburbs. For supplies thankfully my family has a disaster kit, which is stocked up, to last my family a few weeks. I enjoy camping so I have accumulated a fair amount of survival gear. We have no guns but I have 2 combat/ camping knives both homemade ( but they are both extremely high quality and I have abused them both in the woods and the have passed with flying colors) as well a saber made from 1/4 inch thick S-7 tool steel, I have no doubt it could kill a zombie. I also have a compound bow which I can hit a head sized target from 10-15yards most of the time but I would use it for hunting deer or squirrels mainly. The camp Im going to is next to 2 lakes with clean water ( a boil and it's ready to drink I've done it before) and the forest is full of game so food would be plentiful. I would probably want to invite some of the people from the camp with combat or survival skills, but I'm not sure who my parents would invite. But I'm sure some of them would show up anyway. That's my plan any improvement ideas would be very helpful, thanks for reading 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Not a bad plan for a beginner. A bit of constructive criticism:-Head to your BOL before zombies are around your area. If you leave earlier, you have a much better chance of avoiding the Panic. -Will your family be willing to go with your idea? You seem to be assuming that your family will all agree to come with you. -Is this camp well known? If it is, everyone Tom, Dick, and Harry will be headed to it. -Hunting is fine for a bit, but shouldn't be relied on. Try farming as well. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

X is correct. If you can think of lots of others will too.Especially if they live close to it. If this is your plan and not a family disaster plan. You will need to get the parents involved. Now it might not be wise to bring up Zombies but a evacuation plan tied into their disaster kit might work better. Do you find this valuable? |

"Not a bad plan for a beginner. A bit of constructive criticism:The camp is only known well by kids who go there, I wouldn't be too sure that a good majority would think of it as a place to go to, convince their parents, and think of all this before the panic, but if a few familes manage to make it we could try our best to keep out looters or unwelcome visitors, living or dead. The camp is 45 minutes in a car through forest roads to get to the nearest town (4-6 thousand people) and there are other camps that are much closer, but the risk of attracting some others would be one worth taking for all the resources that place has. As for my family, my dad and mom both like Walking Dead, so as we were watching it I told them something along the lines of " if this ever happened we should go up to my camp" in a hypothetical sense they thought it would good place. Unfortunely I can't drive so my parents would control when we leave, but I would try to convince them to leave ASAP, farming was I good idea I hadn't thought of that for some reason :/ and thanks for the advice Do you find this valuable? |

Because if not, then there really isn't any point in planning any further. They will have their own ideas, good or bad. And they aren't likely to listen to you during a disaster. Your only chance to convince them of the right course of action is beforehand. Do you find this valuable? |

Congratulations on taking the first step towards disaster preparedness! Along with what Pedro is saying, my 13 year old can't convince me she's capable of cleaning her room. So why should she convince me she's capable of planning for a societal collapse? See where I am going with this? You have a good start, but chances are that your family thinks preparing for disasters is not cost effective, if they even thought of it at all.

We've talked about what we would if there was ever a SHTF event that took place near us and I convinced them that this would be a good place to go if something really bad happened, they agreed with me and added some winter stuff to our disaster kit because of it. I think there on board with me.

If there is a disaster of some type, most of the major thuroughfares will be jambed,.adding several hours going by back roads, also you will have to cross several major rivers to get there, which may or may not be open. and a lot of back roads dont cross the major rivers anymore, because of interstate and major highway access, bridges were torn down or never replaced. your 6 hour trip can turn into 12 or 24 hours or more, very easily. Will your vehicle carry enough fuel for an extended trip. Dont count on getting fuel anywhere. Do you find this valuable? |

We could carry enough fuel in our car, a bit more than 6 hours would be expected, but we would leave before the panic happened, giving us a better chance of making it there in a safer and faster manor. But I agree fuel can't be depended on.
