Tight spot

Let’s test the creativity of those on this site. The worst has happened, civilization has fallen the world is overrun. Your home was consumed in the initial panic. Your gear has been looted all your weapons are gone. You return to the ruins of your home, hoping to find something only a blackened pile of ash remains. The street you live on is mostly gone only the a few twisted wrecks and a neighbour’s house stands in partial ruin. The place is nearly picked clean All you can salvage is an assortment of random items from the ashes. The Items you salvage are an empty tin can, a 6 foot length of copper wire you ripped from a ruined wall, 3 rags, a boot lace, leather purse a child’s backpack and an intact spindle from the staircase. As you’re about to leave your take note of something buried in the rubble. You lift the piece of drywall revealing the remnants of an intimate dinner. Nauseated by the stench of the rotting food you jolt back. You note the shattered plates a battered candle and a bottle of wine that miraculously survived the carnage protected by a silver ice bucket. You gather your salvaged material and discover your only scrap of food, a smashed granola bar in a plastic bag at the bottom of the child’s backpack . These Items are all you have to survive. How will you survive…… Can you survive? 1 Half used bic lighter 1 Hunting knife 3 Rags – sized 6 x 6 inches 1 Boot lace 1 Leather purse 1 Child’s backpack 1 Wooden staircase spindle 1 Empty tin can 16 oz. 6 ft. of house wire – copper 1 Broken plate - glass 1 Candle 1 Silver Ice Bucket 1 Bottle of semi-sweet Georgian red wine 1 Smashed Nature Valley granola bar – peanut butter coated. 1 Plastic grocery bag Do you find this valuable? |

Let's see here. Would move to an area that has access to fresh water(plenty around me). Use hunting knife to help make improvised shelter and cut me 1ft wire. Take cut wire+1 rag+spindle>torch for later. (Since I count my shoes as gear) 1purse+broken glass(cutting)+boot lace>improvised shoe+leather scrap. Can+Bic>Cooking source+clean water. Silver bucket>container for short collection trips. Grocery bag+child's bag>water resistant bag. 2 rags>bandages 1 wine+1 NV granola>1 nice moral boost. (places 2 rags+1 candle+1 Bic inside improvised water resistant bag) I could do more with each but this was more fun lol. Edit: Adds 5ft copper wire to improvised water resistant bag. Shelter and water would be my next priorities. Since the scenario is MY house, down the road, is a lake less than a minutes jog. That's the water part, as i can just fill up the ice bucket.Shelter now. Since there are no tarps or anything like that in the items i salvaged, i'm looking for somewhere to hold up for the night. I would go to the least ruined house to start building shelter, scavenging any bits of wood or drywall etc that i could from the other ruined houses. i would build some kind of debris shelter in a secure part of the ruin. I'm assuming (ass-u-me i know, but hold up) that the ash has been there a long time, and there are no embers. otherwise, ill take some in the tin can to use to start a fire, so i can save on the lighter's use till i find another firestarting device. Now for the looted items -Lighter - firestarting, obviously one of the most important pieces -knife - defense, general survival use, another important tool -rags - bandages, water filtering -bootlace - cordage, multiple uses -leather purse - could use this to make something, but im not really that competent. would probably ditch it unless i could figure out a good use for it. -childs backpack - store any items i keep for when or if i move out. -staircase spindle - weaponry, could sharpen the end, or put broken glass in it. -tin can - cooking device -copper wire - could use this to make snares if i knew how to, but i dont :( -glass - could try use like a magnifying glass to start fire, don't know if it would work. or use as weaponry with the stick -candle - light, warmth, firestarting -bucket - water holder, could be used for other things -food supplies - morale booster -plastic bag - waterproofing the childs bag? or use it to hold firestarting things to keep dry Do you find this valuable? |

I would use the knife to make a wooden spear. I don't want to have to kill zombies and dress game with the same item, and I'd rather use my wine as a trade good than to try and decontaminate my knife.

yes yes you did lol for shame lol. It occured to me that there are situations where you may not have access to or may lose that gear, you can't plan for everything lol sometimes you just have to swing with the punches.

"1 Half used bic lighter(1) I have a knife and fire, so comfort wise I am good until it rains. Boot lace and knife will eventually create a fire-bow, but not until later on. (2) Kife + Copper Wire or Boot Lace + Sapling = Spear for better zed defense with Stair Spool Bludgeon as a back-up. (3) Child's backpack means I have means of taking whatever I need with me. (4) Ice bucket is fine for water portage and cooking. So would the wine bottle later on. I would suggest cooking down the wine (particularly if there is plenty of water around). Getting it down to a jelly would make your stomach happier for food value and getting rid of the alcohol is a bonus as well. Do you find this valuable? |

I would also move to start moving to an area that has fresh water, so for me that area would be about 5 minutes away. Also, I presume I have the shoes on my feet and the clothes on my back. Seems we have most of the 5 C's of survivability. Combustion - Bic Lighter, Maybe that glass shard could be used as a magnifying piece of glass? Unlikely though, Candle. Consumption - Smashed Granola bar, Red wine. Cutting - Hunting knife, Glass. Cordage - 1 Boot lace, My 2 shoe laces, 6ft of house wire. Cover - None yet, can use the cordage and knife we have to make a shelter. ____________________________________________ Everything else's uses - Rags - Bandages. Leather Purse - Carrying device or used for making other items. Child's Backpack - Carrying device. Wooden Staircase Spindle - Bludgeoning weapon. Empty tin can - Water holding device, Cooking device, Storage device. Silver Ice Bucket - Water holding device, cooking device, storage device. Plastic grocery bag - Used to keep other thing dry, storage device, water holding device. ____________________________________________ What I would improvise from the findings. Knife + Leather Purse + Leather Purse Straps = Sling. Cut out a pouch from the leather pure and remove the two purse straps. Make holes in the sides of the pouch and then slide the purse straps through and tie them off. (Rocks shouldn't be a hard item to come by) Wine + Me drinking it = Storage device, water holding device. Hunting knife + Sapling or Thin Branch of tree = Spear. ____________________________________________ I'd pretty much put all of the items into the back pack, bucket and grocery bag and carry it to the closest fresh water stream. Then I would try and build a lean to shelter from branches, saplings, leaves, etc. Do you find this valuable? |

"use what i can to kill someone else. take their stuff. keep going until i'm either dead or armed. then reassess what i need to do."If the world is as bad as the OP suggested, you shouldn't need to kill someone to take their stuff. There are plenty of dead people whose stuff is easier and safer to steal. Attacking someone with a knife while hoping they have a gun is a terrible plan. Do you find this valuable? |

"Original Quote: "Getting it down to a jelly would make your stomach happier for food value and getting rid of the alcohol is a bonus as well."(1) Simmering any juice down will turn it from a liquid to a jelly (eventually down to a solid). (2) If you have plenty of water, taking the juice down to a semi-solid or solid will help to fill your stomach for the same food value - making your tummy happier with you. (3) Not imbibing alcohol is a wise choice, particularly in a survival situation, as you want a fresh liver for scavanged food, a clear head for decision making, and to not waste energy on being drunk or hungover. I know there are plenty of booze hounds arround here for which this is sacriledge, but after drugs and smoking, alcohol is the next vice to toss for the apocalypse (followed by hookers, gambling, and cellphone texting in the movie theater). 1 out of 1 found this valuable. this is all assuming i am at mu mothers house and it started in the morning: first off I would go out to my hut in the bush (its pretty much empty atm besides some candles and some al foil, its in a small ball, not enough to cook a meal in or really do anything with) take what supplies i can scavenge from there (if it is still standing) then walk off to our bluegum forest to make an all purpose spear, pretty much a sharpened stick. then i would make a small fire using the lighter, on this fire i would reduce most of the alcohol in the can (cheers fro the technique oakspar), fire harden my spear and start the long and laborious process of making a fire pot,(pretty much a wooden cone, you put your coals in the bottom and stuff the rest with tinder, i have used one of these before and they work for up to a week with regular checking) once done I would make my way to the beach, i have built a few shelters up my road in the national park, or 'bases' as i called them when i was a kid, I have buried a small lunchbox with 3 jelly rubbers and a hand line with 3 hooks, this is assuming that it has not been looted (unlikely as i have buried it pretty much 100 metres off my road, into thick national park bush and beneath a pile of sticks and leaves my only worry is that I will not be able to find it). in this area there are lots of banksia trees (absolutely amazing tinder, the seed pods can keep a fire going for ages, and the flower is dipped in water to make a sweet, shugary drink that can keep sore throats down and help fight off many diseases as it has vit a,b and c in it) and grass trees (most australians call them black boys from the charring that they keep from bush fires, but i dont want to offend anyone so im going to call them grass trees) this small prehistoric looking bush/palm thing has many practical uses, the flower stalk of a grass tree can be broken off and used as a softwood for lighting a fire with a fire bow (not that i know how to do it)

the resin of the grass tree can be used to make all sorts of things, it is a type of sap that can be melted and it hardens back into rock hard sap after, this can be used for a whole range of things (the aboriginal formula to make rock hard resin includes charcoal, kangaroo or rabbit droppings and the resin ground into a powder, this would be used as a glue that was readily available and easy to use) the flower stalk can be used as a strong and easy to make spear. so anyway, i would gather all of the stuff i have mentioned and make a camp next morning i would pack all of my new found belongings and begin the trek over the ridge to the beach by this time i would've eaten my museli bar and collected some water (oops left that one out) this trek would take most of the day and by the end im probably going to be very hungry in this case i would search around the large granite rocks around my area and spear a crab (there are lots on the rocks around my area) and put the meat on a line over a rock pool, with any luck an octopus would rear its gelatinous head and take the bait if not i could eat the crab. so there, thats what i'd do in this situation, woah that if alot of writing :P
