We Do an Awful Lot of Talking About Our Current Preps...
Jul 3 2012, 9:41 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 3 2012, 9:43 PM EDT
We do a whole lot of talking about what guns we own now, what our food/water storage looks like right now, what training and experience we have now ---- but we don't do a whole lot of talking about how we plan to improve or change these things tomorrow, or as time and resources permit!

In that spirit, what do you want to learn how to do? Are there are training courses or specialized skills you want to learn? Are there any guns that, while you can't afford them now, you would really like to get? Do you intend to upgrade your living situation to improve survivability and how? In short, what is your long-term survival agenda, and how do you intend to improve your survivability?

Personally, everything I do is to improve my situation tomorrow. I'm moving because there is more work and it generally pays better in that region. Additionally, I am more familiar with that climate and ecosystem, making it far more survivable for me without modern amenities. Someday, I'd like to buy an adequate plot of land back in the woods and have a subterranean home designed and built.

In terms of training, I'd like to enroll in a tactical shotgun course or two and join the 1000 yard club. I'd also like to become a more skilled hunter (I am but a newbie) and gain more experience gardening. I'm also planning to get back into strength sports, maybe even competitively. I also want to run a marathon before I hit 40 years old.

Guns, well, y'all know what guns I want to buy. I needn't even go there!

LJ this is quite the interesting topic

I have several long term goals to acquire skills, Items or to build creations which might be useful in post in a post-apocalyptic world. There are other things I just want to do before I die.

Skills I want to learn:

How to make a horseshoes and how to shoe a horse, because horses may be important and my knowledge on some of the aspects of their care is wanting.

How to make my own tack and saddles, because I won’t be able to purchase them because the stores will not exist lol.

How to build Mennonite and Amish barns with their construction techniques, barns built the old way would be useful. Trial and error may be fun but it wouldn’t be good to survive by it.

How to thatch, another roof option I suppose would always be good.

How to make wagon and guncart wheels

How to make quality nails, I just buy them and the stores will be gone.

How to breed horses, horses would become important for everything having quality ones will be important.

How to birth livestock, erm beyond chickens I’ve never done this myself other people always handled it.

I want to Increase my gun knowledge beyond my collection and antiquated firearms. It’s a limiting factor but I’m learning.

Things I want to build:

Build a functional hot air engine. This engine would be used for water pumping and are safer than steam engines. Hot air engines do not require water only a filled oiler and fuel so they can be left unattended freeing up manpower. This class of thermal engine does not use any petroleum products.

Build a hot bulb engine. These are simple engines which require minimal machining and have few moving parts. They are low RPM engines that do not have electrical systems. Hotbulb engines seem tolast forever and can run off of multiple oil fuels. They can be used in marine situation and in some boats the original engines are still in use after a century. They overcome the problems in using vegetable oil in cold temperatures because of the hot bulb. They function well in sawmills, marine and tractor applications, they were only taken over by the diesel engine due to start up times, you have to heat the hotbulb prior to startup.

Build or modify a tractor into a hot bulb tractor. It could be used for my entire lifespan and it does not need a lubricant oil source as petrol and diesel engines do. I could search for a hot bulb tractor but where is the fun in that? they made them until the early 1960s.

Things I want to do:

I want to reroof the structure on my hunting grounds and convert it into a cottage or maybe even a permanent residence.

I want to update my hunting / survival gear as some arguments against my aged pieces were rather logical and drove their point home.

I want to acquire and restore a Steam Car, an old Stanley Steamer or Locomobile. I just think they’re neat.

Get some of my own work published.

Things I want to aquire: My todo list lol

New Shotgun, no clue what yet

New Revolver, no clue what yet

New Pistol, no clue what yet.

Would like to acquire a SIG P226 Navy, thanks to ISR I have the itch for that pistol. Would like a dedicated Remington tactical shotgun one day.

I will keep acquireing food/water/gear to improve the odds, I do this every month.
I will keep paying down debts and increasing my savings.
Will continue to work on my home, and make it the BIL of choice and keep it ready if needed.

I would love to learn more about carpentry.
I will continue to hunt my @ss off half the year, I learn more and more every season and build on my skill set.
I will learn to love the heat, and suffer because it is getting hotter and hotter every damn year.

I love 226's myself. I've owned 2 and they are fantastic guns. My current one is an older west german version.

Anywho, I feel like I need more ammo. I'm never happy with my ammo supply.

I'm going on my first elk hunt this year more out of curiosity about how to cut up something I've shot and not get sick than want to go hunting.

My ride needs some new tires. I don't like the bfg at's

Like most people, I have every desire to start running/working out again. We'll see.

Ammo is great but what are you going to do after you get to that magical 1000 round number?? Your not going to be able to haul that much, and unless your going to trade it or star in your own Version of the Alamo alot of it will be dead weight.

I don't think it's a bad idea to have ammo on hand for the firearms you own. Prices and availability fluctuate on several of the rounds that I use regularly. I'd prefer not to pay top dollar every time I shoot because I didn't have any stockpiled.

I'm going to admit it, i'm a noob at all of this. But . . .

Atm it's duckshooting season, so i'm planning to go out shooting with my dad and learn more about shotguns etc (we have a .12 gauge, .20 gauge and a .410 gauge). He also said when he gets more oil or whatever he'd show me how to clean our .22

When summer rolls around...

I'm going to head out into the woods around town with some mates, armed with just our bob's and see how we fare.

I understand what your saying Jahadaz but how many rounds do you try to stockpile per caliber? I know for .243 if I have about 3 boxes in my inventory at any given time life is good. Same thing for 12/20 gauge bird loads. My inventory of 5.56 and .223 is prob about 400-500 rounds, same thing for 9mm.I stock up on the good stuff, but for target practice I will just buy what I want and replace it after I shoot it. But my point still stands trying to hit that 1000 round mark for every caliber is like chasing a unicorn.

Oh man, where do I start?

My main goal over everything else is paying off the mortgage on my home and property. I hope to do that in the next ten years.

I want to plant lots of trees, vines and bushes that produce fuit and nuts. I'd like to plant some grape vines and blackberry bushes for wine making. I want to plant walnut, pecan, hazelnut and chestnut trees. I also want to get some peach, apple and cherry trees going soon.

I've read a lot about honey bees and would really like to get some hives going in the next ten years.

I also want to get back into raising chickens and rabbits again. I've never raised goats but I'd like to give it a try.

High on my list is becoming free of the grid and producing my own electricity through wind and solar. I'd also like to purchase a propane powered generator. No plans on starting that until my property is paid off.

My ultimate goal is to keep my home and property in the family and make a place for my kids to return to if they decide to move away from the country to the city. I want my place to be the ultimate BOL for them. If we pass on I'd hope they wouldn't sell our place and keep it as a place to get to if SHTF.

As far as firearms go I have a list of 8 guns that I want to own over the next ten years.

I've got a good start with a Ruger 10/22 and a PSA AR-15.

Next on my list is a Remington 700 Mountain SS in .30-06 w/ a Nikon Buckmaster 4-16x40 scope.
A Mossberg 590 Mariner 12 ga. w/ a Hogue stock 12" LOP and a Bushnell Fastfire optic.
A Ruger SP101 in .22lr w/ a Hogue grip.
A CZ 75B 9mm.
A Ruger SR1911 in .45acp.
And a Smith and Wesson 686 .38/.357mag revolver.

The firarm list is too long to mention fully - next up in each catagory: assault - AK47, sporting - 20g Semi-auto with a rifled slug and a smoothbore bird barrel and extended tube, handgun - 9mm Glock 17 or 19, smallbore - Ruger 10/22.

For the stockpile - powedered milk, butter, and cheese, because I love all of those above and I don't have the time pre-apoc to maintain milk animals (and we hate goat milk/cheese here)

For the farm - putting in a better duck pond/pasture than what they have now (smells like a bloody swamp back there).

Big purcahses - there is a property about .25 miles up the road that I am trying to low-bid to clear and put a barn up on. Considering some meat goats for it (low maintainance and they taste like deer when they forage).

Home - I want to put in a bypass handpump on the well. I have an attic tank to charge the lines in the house - but I have to go up and fill it when the pump is working or carry up water by hand. A handpump with a line up to the tank would mean a half hour of pumping a day to take water off the grid (the creek is a far walk and the water needs boiling).

The garden - still working on getting the boxes right - having strawberries and onions at waste height makes my back happy. Also, I want to put in a greenhouse to get the spring starts out of the house.

Finally, I would love to put in a new "root cellar" (bomb/fallout) shelter - preferably one accessable from the house.

@Oakspar77777, have you looked into haudralic ram pumps?

http://www.theramcompany.com/

No electricity needed and if you're near a creek you'd be set.

We don't have that kind of flow on the creek (it is a long slow 12' wide swamp when it is dry).

I was planing on something like a Bison hand pump on a bypass off the well head before the compressor. Plumbing on the job isn't so bad, but that a 2-2.5K to put a handpump in that is only useful when the power is out long enough to need to refill the the attic tank (something that would take a week if you were conservative about washing and flushing).

well,

i would love to buy some land, but that's an expensive investment.
I'm looking at getting a WASR10 underfolder(or something else if i feel as comfortable with it as i had holding the WASR), a Mosin Nagant carbine,
a couple pistols (one in 9mm or.45, and another in.22, like a MK3)

In addition, I would like to get a vehicle built(yes, i said built) to have as afun car/bug out ride.

ANd I could always use more ammo.
And a decent piece of private land down here to go shooting on.

Soviet if you don't mind taking advice from a cold hearted capitalist dog (lol) if you're interested in aquiring land you may want to frequent land auctions. You can get some sadistically good deals on undeveloped or surplus land but it takes quite a bit of patience and a bit of self control. Even if you don't intend on purchasing anything it is a good way to get a feel for the market. Do you find this valuable?

Getting my ammo stockpile up is key for me over the next several years, 5.56x45, 7.62x51, 7.62x39, 12ga 9mm, .40 and .45 I have actually quite a few rounds of each, the 3 rifle rounds I buy at .25¢ (5.56) a round, the 7.62x51 and x39 I buy at .50¢ a round but they are plinking rounds, yes they will do the job in a pinch but I would like to match my combat rounds to my target rounds stockpile.

The same can be said for the pistol rounds although that's a might easier to accomplish

I would also like to get my dry goods out to a 2 year supply for 5 plus the dogs

I would like to buy a few goats, chickens and rabbits as well as a few more horses, 2 draft horses a couple of Percherons or Belgians and a Friesian or Andalusian.

We have a few fruit trees in a small orchard but I would like to expand that into gardening

Got a 79 Toyota Land Cruiser I need to rebuild the engine in but would like to get it set up as a BOV/LRRP vehicle

The only firearm addition I would like to add to my current arsenal is a semi automatic .338 lapua, i've got an extra Nightforce scope that needs a home
