could i get some advice please :)

So i need some advice from some of you much wiser and better looking members of the zsdw.

My family does own a couple of guns, but there's only really two i'd trust myself with

One is a .410 double barrelled shotgun.
The other is a .22 BRNO, bolt action, with one 5 round mag.

I do have ammo for both, that's not a concern, and in an ideal situation i'd be taking both, but if im bugging out on foot (if i'm alone as i have no drivers licence, this is probably the most likely way im bugging out) i would only be able to carry one.

So which should i take? discuss advantages and disadvantages, anything else you guys could think of would be amazing :)

The .22, it's a no brainer, it provides you a small game hunting round, range, accuracy, cheap ammo and it can kill a human or the undead, 5 rounds is better than 2, I would suggest if possible to get your hands on more magazines if possble.

Meh...how old are you...hope I'm not giving advice to a 12 he old

Legality aside, and this is only theoretical... why not both? Learn to break down one, store it in your pack, and carry the other.

Wouldn't it make sense for you to become familiar with what is available? Both require fairly common ammunition, but what other firearms are available to you that you do not "trust yourself" with? Do not count those that "a friend has, or you will pick up on the ground" etc... Education is far superior to ignorance and fear.

I agree with unassigned - if weight is an issue, break down the one you have more ammo for and storeit (or lash is to the side of your pack).

Use the one you have less ammo for until it runs out - then either trade it (if possible) or discard it (somewhere you could find it again later on if possible).

You will have a bit more weight to start out with, but you won't mistakenly conserve ammo (double tap) early on when surviving the moment means more. Once you are dropping the first gun, hopefully you will be further on when using your firearm is less common.

Can the .410 disassemble? Most DBs can break down pretty small, you could probably throw it in a backpack or on the side of one.

If you could take one, I'd say the .410, a little more oomph and its easier to take birds with the .410 and with slugs, they hit like a .44.

Why not just sling both on your shoulders. Lots of people do it all the time. It may be uncomfortable, but at least you will have a choice of firepower.

Regardless of age or legal issues, during Z Day you want to be prepared.

If he goes for one, chances are the other will slip off.

And he does have family....chances are they'd want one too.

I'm 16, for anyone who cared. I'm not sure if or how the .410 could break down, but i'll look into it.

Thanks guys, this is all really helpful.

The other guns my dad has are a couple of different gauge shotguns (.20 and .12), and a rifle (.308 i think?). my brother has a .357 lever action.

Like i said, i'd preferably be taking both

Ask your dad, but if he doesn't know, try pulling off the fore-end and "breaking" the action, should be all there is to it.

What kind of shotgun is the 12 & 20? (FYI, there is no . in front of the gauge on all but the .410) And what kind of rifle is the .308?

I would get some shooting time on the other guns ASAP.
And try and get the family involved in disaster preparedness.
It would be best to have family along in a SHTF world.
Then you will have more shooters and weapons for protection.

A .12 gauge would be adorable. Could you even fit one pellet of 00 buckshot in a .12?

don't judge me :(

yeah, i've introduced my family to the idea, my parents already had a big box full of tents, gas cookers, food and water, maybe for a week or so. we live in earthquake country so they are prepared for disasters as well as they sort of could be, not prepper style, but better than you average joe.

however, my brother is a diabetic :( i'd miss that guy if shtf, i sure would

Look into zeer pots for that. Not sure where exactly you live, but they work fairly well in most climates as far as improvised refrigerators get, especially for someone who is insulin dependant.

Think about the 12 or 20 pump before the .410.

Rain, no, a 00 is .33 cal. Even #4 is .24
