Teenagers as BOL guards?
Jul 9 2012, 7:55 PM EDT
It will be important for every member of your group to serve guard duty regularly. But should it include teens...properly supervised? Or should the concept be disregarded by groups? It would be an important skill to learn. Nothing is more important to a BOL than security. And if the teens are eager, so much the better. In my view it would depend on the teenager and manpower levels. In the highly unlikely likely event that I had a large amounts of former Police and Military personnel than the teens would be taught and trained and used as labour not as guards. If I was suffering a manpower shortage I would use what I could get. If I had stable levels and little to no professionals I would use the people based on their skillset. I would evaluate teens on their personalities, work ethic, skill set and willingness to learn. Some teens, such as Braydonn, I would trust to do the job without question. Why because some will have earned the trust and respect of those around them though their actions and reactions. Trust is earned not given.

Age limits are a result of a large society attempting to police things that should be decided on factors such as skill and judgement, which are more expensive to test than to control by calendar years since birth. With a small society, the cost to test skill and judgement is negligible, so you can evaluate everyone based on their individual competency. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Well, I'd like to think I'd make a decent guard, but it would be up to the other, older folk in the group whether or not i actually pull guard duty.

Depends on the teenager. I know teenagers I'd trust after they had been trained. But 15yo me would have been a crappy choice to put on guard. I was immature and knew it. I think that would be best on a case by case basis.

Shadow, Pedro, and Want have great points. Nate is at least honest about his qualifications.Guard is not exactly a rent-a-cop job. They have to be able to stay alert for extended periods of times. Have to be able to control urges like talking, eating, sleeping, smoking, ect. Has to be able to tell someone where everything in the area is. Trees, shrubs, holes, dips, rises, creeks, bridges, buildings, animals, fences. Can't expect a person to notice something out of place if they don't know the surroundings and or what to look for. Shooting is only a small part of doing guard duty. I would rather have a lousy shot but a observant and alert guard. Instead of crack shot that keeps falling asleep or lighting up his smokes. I think to many people think guard duty can be done by just anyone. Age also has zero effect on being able to pull guard duty. Now everyone will need to pull guard, but they will need paired with experienced guards and used in less vital areas and in less demanding times like day time. So in short, age don't matter. Ability and what skill sets they have will determine their qualifications. Nice one Skipper. Good thread idea. Now it has been hashed out before but still good one. Do you find this valuable? |

Dang...I really suck at threads! All the ideas I come up with are either illogical or have been beaten to death. But it simply challenges me to be more creative and logical. That's what I'm starting to like about ZSDW...it challenges members to think outside the box and to do so in ways that work. I'm a novice at this but I hope to do better. Do you find this valuable? |

i personaly think its more of a situational problem your asking it depends on skill maturity level and the size of your group personaly i would have a problem putting a teen on such a vital position that determains wheather you live or not but that is just a general rulling

Guard duty is about being fresh - as boredom is a brain killer that leads to daydreams and missed spots. So, the more people you have pulling guard duty, the shorter the shifts and the better the duty. If I have four people in my group, we are each pulling two three hour shifts every day. Since we sleep for 1/3 of the day, of our combined 64 man hours in a day, 24 (over a third) are spent on watch. Add in eating, pooping, and the rest and there is not many hours left to work. Now, our group get Tweak McGitters the 14 year old who has run out of the Adderal, Rittilin, Prozac, and Lithium cocktail that he has been on since he was diagnosed with a terminal case of critical ADHD. So, we give him half hour shifts through the day for a total of 2.5 hours (5 shifts). That might not seem like much, but it is 10% of the guard duty for even the most flake prone teens - and he still has the rest of the day of chew the bark off of trees and chase dragonflies (or whatever those kids do when not chemically bolted to the ground). A normal teen makes a great guard person. Their eyes are usually sharper than adults, they function well on late nights, and the only reason every 16 year old isn't supporting a wife and raising kids is culture - not genetics. You give a teen a man's work and man's responsibility, and, most of the time he will man up for it. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |
