1. RE: 9mm or 45acp?

Oh dear God.Unless you're talking FMJ only the 9mm doesn't have all that much less stopping power than the .45. I'd probably take my Glock 9mm unless my gf needed it, I've used it the most, I can field strip it in less time than my 1911 (and with my eyes closed) and I can only have 10 rounds in a pistol mag in Canada so it only has 3 more rounds than my 1911. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. These have been done to death, but I'll answer anyways. There's really not much difference between modern 9mm loads and modern .45 loads ballistically speaking. Unless you're stuck using FMJs, it's all preference. Both are severely underpowered when compared to rifles/shotguns, so you should always count on shooting a target multiple times before it's incapacitated (You can mortally wound someone without incapacitating them). Shot placement is far more important than caliber. That's one of the reason I went with a Glock 19 as my sidearm, I can load it with high performance ammo for defensive situations and stock up on Winchester White Box or Silver Bear for practice cheaper than I can my .45. I also think that more rounds is more options. I also have a quicker shot recovery with the Glock as opposed to my 1911 (Which is still great for a .45). 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

The energy each round carries isn't that much different what makes the. 45 a better "man stopper" is that it's slower. A 9mm is going in and out in most cases which means most of the energy is wasted. Whereas a .45 is going in and stopping depositing all of it's energy in the target. Shooting at something already dead makes that irrelevant though. Zeds 9mm actual breathing humans .45

"Bersa handguns are alright, but I really like the looks of the XDS.The best caliber is the one your most comfortable with and the one that performs best for you, bottom line it's like ODB says, shot placement is more important than caliber. To answer the OP though, for me 9mm all day, reacquisition for follow up shots to put more rounds down range is where it's at for me. "Caliber? "Bersa handguns are alright, but I really like the looks of the XDS.I've handled the XD-S and I am very impressed with it. It actually has weight to it, which IMHO is essential for such a small firearm. Not to mention that they JUST released 7-round mags for it. I'll likely pick one up. As for the 9 vs 45 debate... WHY!? People think this choice is so simple and it isn't. Purpose, skill level of the user, platform and choice of ammunition all play a factor in it. I use both for different purposes. People who limit their selection are only limiting themselves. Not going to lie, I've always liked this quote: "A 9mm might expand, but a .45 ACP sure as Hell won't shrink." 3 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

There are so many varieties now that you don't have to sacrifice magazine capacity. My xd-45 can carry 13+1. 14 rounds of .45acp ain't half bad. There are times though when I wish I had gotten a 9mm instead purely from a cost and weight standpoint. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Both and the .40 caliber is great to. I have all three calibers and I think it wise to be able to use all of them as well, you never know what your going to scrounge up. They all work and the best caliber is whatever you have on you at the time.

Ahh... this old debate. Time to add a new rule to the ZSDW drinking game...I prefer 9mm. It is less expensive (making it more practical for stockpiling) and offers sufficient performance for the task it is designed to perform. Most people, at least from my personal observations, shoot 9mm more accurately than .45 ACP, when shooting two comparable quality handguns. And as others have stated before, it doesn't matter as much WHAT your shooting, but rather WHERE you're hitting! That said, and like Unassigned said, it is silly to limit yourself to just one choice. AK vs. AR? Get both. Revolver vs. semi-auto pistol? Get a few of each. 12 gauge vs 20 gauge? Duh, BOTH. 9mm vs. 45? Get some, get a few other handgun calibers too. .380 ACP, .40 S&W, 9mm Makarov (oh yeah, I went there.) Don't forget a little .22, they're a lot of fun and range time is range time. Don't limit yourself, walk hard. If you have a limited budget, prioritize. 9mm is more budget friendly, provided you don't piss all your money away in unaimed rapid fire sequences. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

.22lr9mm .45acp .38/.357 Those are the pistol chamberings I'd like to own. I've already got the .38/.357 covered although I'd really like to own a S&W 686 someday. I just need to come to a decission on the others and stop building ARs for a year or two so I can round out my collection. I want to own a 1911 in .45acp just because its a classic firearm that is still viable 100 yrs after it first went into production. A 9mm is high on my list because of the reasons LJ has mentioned. A .22 is also high on my list because of the reasons LJ has stated. Big thumbs up for keeping things civil in a discussion like this. I've seen some pretty big flames on firearms forums. Glad to see the ZSDW has matured a bit over the years. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I know very little about firearms in general, true fact. But logically, I'd select a pistol that has a good overall average of accuracy, stopping power, penetration, and range. I used to be a big fan of those Agent Smith guns...you know, the villian from the Matrix. Then I found out how unpractical those type of pistols are. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

yeah it's best to have multipul options "what is best" in one scenario will not be the best in another. LOL timber at least you don't have to deal with canadas insane gun laws. I caught the news the other day and toronto was trying to ban handgun ammo....... oi when will people learn it's not the tool that does the thing but the person behind the tool. Thankfully it was defeated lol becase that was just........... stupid. lol criminals types would oh I don't know go to another city for their ammo needs lol

"True that, forks don't make people fat and pencils don't misspell words."It's human nature to blame inanimate objects rather than to try to place blame on humans themselves. It's definitely sad, because some of these people have a really screwy agenda that they're pushing... For instance, it would be highly inappropriate to blame cigarettes for my old smoking habit. Go figure, when I acknowledged that it was my weakness and addiction that was making me want to smoke, I figured out how to quit. I quit stone cold turkey about three and a half years ago. I don't want one now, and most of the time I don't even notice them when I'm at a convenience store anymore. Blaming guns for crime is just as faulty as me blaming the cigarette industry for my addiction. It's like blaming the stage for bad acting, or the movie theater for a bad movie. It's nonsensical displacement of responsibility. *Stepping off my little soap box now.* Do you find this valuable? |

Well, cigarettes have Nicotine in them, which makes a chemical reaction in your brain, which makes your addiction tougher to break. So, yes, you could partly blame cigarettes. Forks make eating food simple... (joking on this one!)Seriously, take the one you prefer the most. With all the calibers and handguns on the market, you can get similar performances out of both of these. But, remember there are other calibers (like the .357) 0 out of 3 found this valuable.
