Ruger Young American it's synthetic stocked, rotary 4rd detachable mag, recoil pad, and Weaver base. 308Win at about $450. Everything I've read says it's a decent to great shooter Do you find this valuable? |

I like the Remington 700, but Remington hasn't been up to par recently in a lot of ways. The Winchester Model 70 is a fine rifle as well. Mossberg is now making a .308 XTR for not a lot of money, and Marlin is too if memory serves me correctly. Savage makes a lot of really dandy .308 rifles that come with their accutrigger, which is really nice. Never really used bi-pods for hunting much, but Harris makes good bi-pods. The thing about bi-pods on a lot of hunting rifles is that they add a bit of weight, and if you're not a mostly stationary hunter they're kind of a pain to carry. Can I ask why a 4x12 scope? That's not a lot of magnification and the field of view is really narrow. Might I suggest a 4x30 if you want a low power fixed scope? Or a 3-9x30( 40 or 50), or a 4-12/6x30(40 or 50). That would give you a pretty versatile range of magnification. Do you find this valuable? |

Well, if budget is no issue, I'd have a rifle built for me. Nothing off the rack would cut it if I was swimming in Bens without a limit.Personally, I wouldn't go with .308 Win, if it were up to me. .30-06 offers a tad more performance (especially with handloads) for about the same price per round. I'd start with a Zastava Z-98 Mauser long action, 25.6" long 1:10 twist Lother-Walther barrel (Contour #724) mated, action tuned and trued, trigger either swapped out with a Timney unit or tuned up (I'd be happy with 3.5-5 pounds), and the entire action dropped into a tan Bell and Carlson Medalist stock. Then, I'd have a Leupold Mark 4 Extended Range Tactical M5, 6.5-20x 50mm with the TMR reticle fitted. Goodness, it makes my hairs raise thinking about it. And I have absolutely no use for a rifle like that. Do you find this valuable? |

"Steyr Modified Scout, bolt action, 10rnd magazine, Nightforce NXS 1-4x24 NP-1."Good choice and there is the Ruger Gunsite Scout. But they both have ten round detachable mags. Which lots of states a mag capacity over 5rds is illegal. But I do think both rifles have 5rd hunting mags too. Just check your states laws and the manufacturers to be sure. LJ has a great point. A 30-06 (7.62x63) is a slightly more powerful round (factory loads) and especially if hand loaded. It can almost match the 308 (7.62x51) in accuracy and get close to the factory 243 loads in speed and flat shooting. Just depends on how you hand load them. But for commonality the 308 is better and more accurate. For hunting big game from deer to moose < hand loading, and shooting through cover the 30-06 is better. For accuracy and commonality the 308 is better. Do you find this valuable? |

"You can buy 5 rnd mags for them or install round limiters in the 10 rnd magsNow the Steyr Scout has the synthetic stock the OP specified with a modern look. Now the Ruger Scout has a wooden stock and has a old school appearance. Now if I could I would own both. But sadly being a married guy with three kids I have to settle for home built scout rifles. So using the OP's specifications the Steyr is the choice Do you find this valuable? |

I'd look around the used sections of the gun and pawn shops near you. Ou should be able to find something good for a decent price. Pretty much any of the big-name rifles (Remington 700, Winchester Model 70, Savage 110, Ruger M77, etc.) should more than suffice for what you need.Edit: Didn't notice the need for a bipod, oops. Although, you can buy ones that mount on sling swivels. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

My .308 is a Savage (straight from Wal-mart with a Bushnell 3-9 X 40 scope on raised rings). Total cost was under $300.It tends to stick with steel cases after a few rounds, but with brass if fires beautifully. Any scope, bypod, etc is aftermarket, so get what you want and can afford. I've found bypods to be generally overpriced for what they are. I use a shooting stick (hand carved) when standing. When hunting, I'm usually using the rail or windowsash of the deer stand. Just wondered, is what I was going to recommend I will add though that Savages are some of the most accurate "OUT OF THE BOX" bolt actions made. Do you find this valuable? |

"i am purchasing a new "deer rifle" it must meet these qualifications it must be 308. cal, synthetic not wood, a 4x12 scope and have a bi-pod does anyone have any suggestions."As Sasquatch said, many of the big name rifles can fit your needs. Remington has ~39 variations of the Remington 700 on their webpage, and if these dont fit your exact specs, they can be modified to make a rifle that you need. In reality, its all about what works best for you. Shoot a few different models, and find out what suits you best. Do some research in what makes each rifle different from the next and then decide... don't decide from what you hear on a website. Do you find this valuable? |
