survival
Jul 22 2012, 1:23 AM EDT
I'm 14 and i live in florida an hour from tampa. I live about 15 miles from the closest town and live in an equestrian neighborhood. I own a glock 19 and a ruger 10/22 scoped rifle and i always have about 200-400 rounds for the rifle and about 100-200 for the handgun. i also own a longbow with carbon fiber arrows with field tips. my dad is a carpenter and he is also good with electricity, plumbing, and gas. we have two years worth of propane and multiple generators. we have 6 acres and a two story house and a three board fence around my property. I plan on holeing up in my property. not many people go out by us so there won't be many zombies. there are many animals including deer, rabbits, cows, chickens, and horses which can be used for either meat or transportation. After searching for survivors and raiding homes in my neighborhood i will go to a home depot and collect seeds for planting. Many of my neighbors have guns and hopefully i will be able to collect some. what do you think?

So you're planning on "collecting" their firearms? Is that before or after you murder them? Have you even considered that you could die trying to collect more firearms? Why not just buy some more now so you don't have to kill any innocent people?Plus, your neighbors could be a much bigger use than you realize, I'm sure they know things you don't and are quite knowledgeable people, why not join forces with them, joining them will probably increase your chances of survival by the sounds of it. Like Maricely and Jesse have said, don't plan on having things you don't own prior to SHTF. Because chances are, you won't get them. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Why not just buy some more now so you don't have to kill any innocent people?Don't be too hard on the guy. He seems reasonably well-prepped (More than a lot of us were when we joined). He's not making any terribly stupid sayings, just unlearned ones, and he's got a pretty realistic plan for survival. The only two things I saw in the post were the big store seed thing, and the neighbor-rifle-collection thing. Buy both of them before SHTF, and you won't need to risk anything trying to get it after SHTF. Do you find this valuable? |

Ignorance is bliss. You have a few tools but you lack the proper knowledge to use them correctly and increase your odds of survival. Rule number 1, and it has already been mentioned, if you do not actually have it in your possession right now then you do not have it. You also cannot bank on a supply store having anything after sh!t goes down. Buy your supplies now. In conclusion, if I was in your situation I would plant my seeds now. I would also scout every bit of hunting property withing walking distance. Make maps of what you see, animal trails, for instance would be a perfect example of something you might make a note of. Purchase or construct few snares and practice your abilities as a trapper now. I promise you with a little honing you can ensure a meal on the table without expending a single round of ammunition. PS. As for your looting neighbors homes idea... The whole time you lived on your street that creepy guy across the street has been watching you, waiting. Post apoc you think everyone is just going to die so you venture into his home unaware of this monster. You find yourself in a dark, dingy place. What a slob some people can be. You are amazed because this guy who lived by himself has a large amount of children's clothing in his bedroom. Your so busy scavenging through his belongings you never even saw the figure in the shadows in the corner. He never was one for guns but his secret life demanded a decisive weapon for his prey. You never really did know what happened to you, the world just went dark, as his mallet connected with the back of your head... Do you find this valuable? |

"I'm 14 and i live in florida an hour from tampa. I"you must live pretty close to me then. Your best bet is to hole up in no man's land. I bike and hike through similar areas, and I can only share with the non-locals how desolate it is once you get away from the cities. If you have a good setup, you shouldnt have to worry about guns. although, i'd reccomend a decent hunting rifle in a larger caliber. Aside from that, lemme tell you a bit about our state. we have several locations that are targetable by nuclear strikes. we are surrounded on water by 3 sides, have horrid rainfall, and normal farmland tends to turn into floodplains after tropical storms. IF some catastrophe occurs, the northern direction will be sealed off by national guard or other means. At the very least, they'd seal the highways. I personally have marked locations that are currently occurpied that are at least 15 miles from my home which could be either acquired... or... i and any others could ask to temporarily occupy their home. or a part of their land. The way i see it, Putnam, you are in a location where the distance to civilization and nature are more deadly than any type of catastrophe, save for, idk, a random meteor of megatidal wave... Curious, i gotta ask, and no i don't live here, but i live within the county of it. Do you know a town called Polk City? ...or as us locals call it.. Polk sh*tty. Do you find this valuable? |

Seeds should be had on hand - even harvesting a few from the foods you eat (pumpkin, butternut, peper, tomato, etc will build a supply). As far as your neighbors go, the ones with guns are the ones that would still be occupied. Get to know your neighbors. Take note of the ones who are elderly, sickly, diabetic, or disabled. Those are the ones not likely to last long and whom you could scavange from first. Also, if you know your neightbors, you can visit with them post-apoc for trade and support - this will also let you know who is stil there without the risk of being shot because they didn't know who you were pre-apoc.
