I think most people could cobble together a pretty good BOB without spending a single dime, using items collected from within their own home.

Backpack: the one you use/used for school, or homemade hobo sack
Weapon: Tire iron from car trunk, hammer from toolbox, etc.
Knife: Paring knife from kitchen drawer, cardboard/duct tape sheath
Food: Raid your fridge/cabinets for canned food stuffs, have a quick snack before you roll.
Water: Any sealing container will do in a pinch, plastic being preferable to glass.
Shelter: Shower curtains, tarp or wool blankets, poncho, cordage
First aid: What family doesn't have at least a simple first aid kit? If not, NSAID, bandaging material (clean cotton, means to keep it in place), diarrhea medicine, sewing kit, topical analgesic or rubbing alcohol
Cordage: boot laces, draw strings from clothing, scavenged wire, etc.
Firestarting: matches, lighter, old birthday candles, dryer lint in ziploc bag.

Misc: Flashlight, spare batteries, duct tape, small aluminum/steel pot, important documents/ID, personal medications, change of clothing (extra socks and underwear), contacts list (since nobody memorizes phone numbers anymore), and anything else that might be useful that you see and will fit in your scavenged BOB.

If you decide to make a hobo pack, you can use a wooden broom handle or collapsed shower curtain rod to hold it. It can also be used in conjunction with a tarp or shower curtain, and rocks as a simple shelter low shelter. And, if it's a wooden broom handle, as a walking stick. The broom is an old straw broom, the straw can be used as fire bedding, to elevate a fire off of the ground a little bit while starting it.

A $50 dollar budget eh? It seems like I will be doing some scrounging, doing a little fabrication and getting some free stuff to boot to accomplish this challenge.

The first thing I would do is acquire the leaf spring of an old cargo van or medium to heavy pickup truck. If they are not useable or a mismatch unknown the springs are sold for their scrap values not their parts value. I would use this as the basis of my weaponry. I would disassemble the leaf spring and cut it into the desired shapes. I would then shape the blanks into the weapons and tools needed with filing grinding and cold forging techniques. I would fill the bolt holes with surplus welding sticks. From this stock I would create 45 arrowheads, 1 spear head, 1 long knife, 2 hunting knives, 1 La Tene style short sword and an Otiz style axe head and an Ulu knife. This metal stock makes excellent blade material and I like multiple options. I would take one layer and make a prybar.

I would then venture into the woods and gather suitable materials and wood for construction. I would grab cedar for arrow shafts, maple for pole and handle wood and a piece of green ash for a bow. I would strip dead birch bark for containers and spruce root for cordage. I would process nettle into fiber and make 3 bowstrings. I would carve a stave for a hunting bow. I would shape and fire harden the maple for my spear shaft. I would split and shape the cedar for my arrows I would fletch them with common goose feathers and fishing line and birch tar. I would find a nice branch with a knot on top, sourced from maple and mimic the construction Of Otiz the iceman’s copper axe I would use the rawhide from the dog treats to lash the blade along with rivets and birch tar. I would hilt my knives, sword and Ulu in whatever scraps of raw wood were left over after fire drying them. I would mount the spearhead using rivets and birch tar sourced from birch bark and the leaf spring.

To hold the weapons I would construct various containers. I would construct a birch bark quiver and place 15 arrows within leaving the remaining heads untouched. I would find a discarded oak skid and shape that into a series of sheaths for my blades. The two halves of the sheath would assemble with birch tar with split spruce root stitching. The interior would be lined with craft felt sourced from a local dollar store. I would make pouches from the cloth to store pieces of tinder and the surplus arrow heads, fletching materials and bowstrings and cordage. I would take a piece of fire hardened maple and carve a fire piston. I would tear thin strips of cloth and knot it into a weapons belt and straps for my sword and quiver. I would cut heavy plastic shopping bags and heat join the seams into waterproof pouches to keep my items dry. To hold my food or other gathered food I would construct a birch bark container and use salvaged containers.

For cooking containers I would salvage an apple juice can, I love apple juice so I always have a few in the recycling bin, open the top and use it as a pot. I would use coffee can puncture a hole in the bottom and put a scrap of cloth, sand and charcoal sourced from burnt wood making a filter with a plastic lid. I would weave strips of plastic bags into a cord to use to insure the lid stayed on. I would take 3 cans which fit into each other for birch tar production. I would use an old cough syrup bottle to store a supply of birch tar for future repairs, waterproofing, light and medical needs. I would salvage a plastic lidded container, such as a peanut butter container, to hold food. Cut the top of a coke bottle off and I have a scoop and funnel. I would place these items both made and salvaged and purchased in my sack. I will place a nice chunk of sandstone to sharpen my blades taken from my backyard. I am fully armed with a plethora of quality weapons and have reasonable tools and slight provisions all for $50.

For food and drink I would carve a simple kuska cup, a wooden spoon and a simple wooden trencher.

Price list:

Time and creativity: priceless

Truck leaf spring $ 18

Food $ 7 (8 x Mr. Noodle $2, 20 x packets of honey free from multiple sources such as Starbucks, restaurants or McDonalds, 8 pepperoni sticks $2, 4x sesame snaps $2.

Other 5 x peanutbutter packets from restaurants

Water $3 (2 x 1.5L Naya water bottles $2, 3 x 500 ml Naya water $1)

Materials $22 (10 x felt sheets $2, 1 x bag of rawhide dog treats $2, 1 x Heavy shoulder bag $ 8, 1.2 m of heavy cloth from fabric scrap bin $1, fishing hooks and weights $2, fishing line $7)

Free stuff: Ikea pencils x 4, notepad from hotel, matchbook from a bar, 3 x sewing kit from a hotel, pocket med kit free from CRA, plastic shopping bags, empty tin cans, sand, charcoal, sandstone, ground scrap, salt packets from burger joints, bars of soap from hotel/motel stays, 50ml tequila bottle free with full sized purchase ( I don't like this brand of white tequila). Resuable burlap grocery bag, free with corn purchase. Wooden Kuska cup, spoon and trencher free.

Notes: The white tequila, some soap and the remaining cloth are added to the scant medical kit and are sealed in a plastic pouch. The peanutbutter would be better served as a bait for figure 4 deadfalls hence its status as other.I may use the remainder of the rawhide, a fire hardend stick and a oval rock in an attempt to create a warclub as Bigloki described. It would be interesting project and fallback weapon. I've never made this style before but it would be an interesting experiment. I have more wool blankets than I know what to do with so the blanket was not included in the list. I also assumed I wouldn't be nude so I will have typical cloths for me: Jeans, T shirt, over shirt, belt, socks, boxers, hat and sunglasses as well as boots, jacket and wool mittens.

^^^^^ And there you have it, complete proof that you don't need to spend excessive amounts of money in order to have an excellent BOB. :)

You're creativity amazes me Shadow! I think it's always a good idea to practice making your own tools/weapons/items, if SHTF it's not like you can just walk down to the store and buy (insert desired item).

Hard work, a little knowledge, bushcraft, creativity and an old skillsets will win the day ;)

For those of you that don't know an Ulu is a type of Inuit (Eskimo) knife, it is a common utility tool often used to process game, scrape hide and to do a thousand other little tasks. It is often ommitted from the prohibition on knives where the blade is perpendicular to the handle because it is a tool not a weapon.

Spent about 18 bucks at the hardware store and bought a three foot piece of two inch thick walled pipe and a 2 inch T coupler. Cut 18 inches off the pipe for the handle. threaded the coupler on to one end. Cut 6 inches more from the other end of the remaining pipe with a 45 degree angle. Threaded that into one side of the T coupler and then used a file to bevel the edge. Another $2.80 got me a cleanout cap end to turn into the other side of the coupler. Now I have a melee weapon with a 2 inch headhole maker on one side and an improvised hammer on the other. $4 magnesium firestarter brick and an $8 fixed blade knife from walmart get me a means to start fires when my $1 bic runs out. A tube of 'liquid metal' from the clearance isle for $3 gives me some added stability to my threaded together melee weapon when i put it around the joints and cram the rest into the head to keep zobie blood from running down the handle. A swing through the medicine isle nets me bandages and gauze for $4 and a tube of crazy glue (liquid stiches) for $2 bucks. I cram all this and 100 feet of paracord $6 into the handle of this melee weapon and drill two holes to run pieces of coat hanger through the bottom of the handle to keep it from falling out. To finish it off I cut a 7 inch section out of an old bike tube. Cut the rest into a ribbon to wrap the handle of my ace harware war hammer and slide the 7 inch section up and over the handle to cover the loose end of my tube wrapping to keep it secure. Than fold the bottom end of your tube sleeve up about 3 inches to create a pocket to keep pieces of a charred old tshirt in for tinder. You should have a couple bucks left for a bottle of water and candy bar. Bug out bag where your weapon is the bag. Some of your paracord could make a decent sling. The handle is terribly bulky but I have pretty huge hands. You may want to use 1.5 inch pipe or even smaller. I think I will next time. Have fun. Do you find this valuable?

Let me get this straight. the side thats just 2 inch sharpened pipe is supposed to function like a pick? I dunno man I think it would get stuck in the first skull you hit with it and then all those supplies will be stuck with it. Maybe if your only gonna fight zombies 1v1

Ive been thinking about that lately too. I retract my "head-hole maker" comment. Probably better off using the hammer side. Probably just use the "pick" side for digging fire pits and the like. That is if I can manage to keep from piercing my own skull with the pick on the back swing. Good lookin-out ralph. I appreciate the constructive criticism.
