Handgun Nomination Thread 2012

Hola everyone! The time has come again for the annual ZSDW Weapon Election! On this thread, you can nominate the handgun you think is the best choice for when the SHTF.

A few rules:
1. You must provide reasons as to why you think so. Simply saying "Because I said so" isn't good enough.
2. The handgun must be reasonably available to the public. Let's try to keep the prices under 2K.
3. For designs that are extremely prolific, just nominate it under a series. E.G. Instead of nominating "Glock 34" or "Kimber Super Carry Pro", just go with Glock series or 1911 series.

IMPORTANT! If there are any questions, I ask that you please read the attached Election page first. PM me with any further questions.

Thanks, and happy nominating!

Voting will commence on August 16th.

For my nomination, I will nominate the S&W L-frame series of revolvers (581, 586, 681, 686, etc.) It combines the comfortable grip of the K-frame with the sturdiness of the N-frame, and IMO is a very nice weapon. Accurate, powerful, fires common ammo, and is extremely reliable.

Nominations so far:
S&W L-frame.
1911 series
Glock series
Colt Detective Special
Springfield Armory XD series
Sig P226
Ruger P series
Browning Hi Power
T/C Contender
Taurus Judge
Walther PP (includes PPK and PPK/S)
Beretta 92
S&W M&P
S&W N-frame
CZ-75
Jericho 941

I'm gonna say 1911 Series in any calibre.

Light recoiling, accurate, common parts, usually common calibres, durable, easy to use.

Edit: recoiling, not recouping.

I nominate the Glock series of handguns, preferably the 9mm.

They're simple, easy to work on, dead-nuts reliable, light weight, you can put almost any accessory on them imaginable (and with ease because they're so easy to work on), they tend to hold a lot of bullets (the 9mm can hold 10-35 rounds), the magazines are interchangable (with a Glock 19 magazine and a slide on grip your Glock 26 can be an ankle gun, or a compact fighting handgun), the Tenifer finish is incredibly tough, most police agencies use them, and lastly, almost anyone can afford one.

The Taurus PT92 is a improved copy of the Beretta 92.
All steel with external hammer.
9mm with 15-17rd magazines. Also able to accept Beretta 92 magazines too.
Inexpensive, in the Glock 17 price range.
Reliability is top notch.
9mm cheap and commonality is great.
Plus I own one and prefer it over my Glock 17 any day.

I vote for the Springfield XD. It is accurate as H3!!, well balanced, holds 14 rounds with one in the pipe, reliable ( I have put well over a thousand rounds through my 45 and never once had a jam or part breakage) and it usually costs less than a glock new. Do you find this valuable?

The Ruger P series.
Reliable as hell.
Built to last and can hang with the higher priced brands.
Pick your flavor, 9mm or .45 ACP
Oh did I mention that you can buy one of these for about 1/3 the price of a SIG/COLT/HK. You can damn near build a small weapons inventory for the price of of some of the handguns on the market.

I second the S&W L-frame. Preferably, in .357 magnum.

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/images/26249.jpg

Excellent stopping power, range, and accuracy.
Allows for 3 kinds of ammo: 38 spl., 38 spl.+p, and .357 magnum. Plus the rat-shot shell types for very small game.
A variety of barrel lengths offering concealability or maximized muzzle velocities.
Single or double action fire option.
Dependable. A revolver can be left loaded without fear of long-term magazine spring compression.
Easy to clean and maintain.

Semi Automatic wise, I choose the Glock Series. And that is because ALL Glock handguns are lightweight, thanks to the polymer frame. Reliable and durable. They can be wet, dirty, muddy, frozen and run over by a truck and still empty a clip. No joke, these are the tests they put glocks through. Next, they are simple. I took one apart, cleaned it and put it back together in 5 minutes when I was 12. Also, they all come in either 9mm, 10mm auto, .40 or .45 auto. All pretty common ammunition. Not to mention they are carried by half the law enforcement in the U.S. Last but not least, they are fashionable. They come in a handful of color frames, and sizes, standard, compact or subcompact, the latter perfect for a backup or ankle holster. Not to mention you can pimp them out with different grips, flashlights, lasers, silencers etc. the perfect handgun, in my eyes. Do you find this valuable?

Browning Hi-Power. It's like a 1911, but improved! :) (Dons flame suit).

Seriously, it's served with 50 odd countries or more, so it can't be a bad thing.

I'm going to go with the Thompson Center Arms G2 Contender pistol.
It's reliable, and whilst it only fires one shot at a time, it's capable of taking some powerful loads. On top of this, you can acquire different barrel lengths to use in different locations. Whilst a very long barrel looks ridiculous to me, I can see situations where having a rifle-length barrel firing .45-70 ammunition would be an excellent choice, especially for such a small gun. I don't anticipate this being a popular choice, due to the single shot capacity, and a fiar bit of weight for what is essentially a pistol, but I'd like people to consider options that aren't just a glock or 1911 (though I support both of thosee too).

If I'm allowed a second nomination, the Taurus judge.
The versatility it allows in a small package is extremely useful, and the ability to switch between .45 long colt bullets and .410 shotshells simply by rotating the cylinder is excellent. The low capacity leaves a little to be desired, and it's ugly as s***, but that last point is my opinion, and 5 rounds is usually plenty pre-SHTF, and post-SHTF, I would value the versatility.

Edited because I left some information out.

Springfield xd series. Very natural point and shoot feel, extremely simple to field strip and clean, great price point for the quality, and comes in most commonly found calibers. Magazines are also decently priced. Plus I really like the grip safety, the loaded chamber indicator, and the ability to see the firing pin. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Walther PPK/S.
Don't doubt the small caliber, this thing is solid and well built. Easy to strip and a nice size too. Nice and accurate at it's intended ranges.
